Not a Soft Machine fan per se, but somehow bought this back in 1978 and loved it ever since. Comments relating to JMJ or anyone else are spurious. Interestingly (life is weird) I had an intern about 10 years ago that was one of the band members sons! I asked him about this and they said it was a bit of a throw away, frivolous fun. Well, great result then!!!
Subtle, clever, Teutonic, irresistible - a masterpiece of understated discoid soundsculpting that just goes to show what can be achieved when a band steps outside the boundaries of its comfort zone (which, for Soft Machine, were always pretty expansive and uncertain anyway). By the time of this track, and its parent album (1978, Alive And Well, Recorded In Paris), the band had been through so many changes that they were virtually unrecognisable from the original 60s and early 70s outfits, and had fallen under the guidance of keyboards genius Karl Jenkins, who brought a somewhat more melodic beating heart to the often uncompromisingly abstruse Soft Machine character (further refined and distilled a couple of decades later into the magnificent Adiemus project). I suspect that this track is very much a solo showcase for Karl's meticulous Moroder-style electronic programming, with little or no obvious input from the other band members, and coming out sounding very much like an amalgam of other currently popular acts like Telex, Jean-Michel Jarre, Manuel Göttsching/Ashra and Yellow Magic Orchestra, as well as Brian Bennett's seminal keynote genre reference work Voyage, which was out the same year. This airy, brightly-hued gallop (...if a gallop can be said to be brightly-hued...) down a luminous hyperspace by-pass should never be dismissed as a national treasure band caving in to the demands of commercialism, which I know is the view of so many, but rather regarded as a realignment informed by pioneering new money. That they never returned to this style only emphasised their integrity. (Had this become a massive hit single, I shudder to think what may have happened - Soft Machine as a glittery disco-funk band? Glad that one never came about!) They did it once, and once only - that was enough, and in that one simple killer stroke, they outclassed all the rest of the electro-disco torrent of the times. So all hail and bravo, Soft Machine! .
writer Jenkins, line up: - Steve Cook / bass guitar - John Etheridge / acoustic & electric guitars - Karl Jenkins / piano, electric keyboards and syntheziser - John Marshall / drums, percussion - Rick Sanders / violin
So much borrowed from Giorgio's Moroder/Donna Summer "I Feel Love" wich went immidetly ranked among the greatest classic tunes from Disco era. Great interpretation here.
Yeah but Giorgio borrowed from his damn self anyway when he made Chase!! of course I guess I'm not supposed to know that because I'm one of those bad old millennials at the age of 35 born in 1985 thank you!!
This tells absolutely another story if put side by side with I feel love or anything Moroder... Apples & oranges. :) If this is just like I feel love, then New Order's Blue Monday would be the same. Only thing in common would be "sequenced electronic sound" - such a limited fact, as it's just a "tool" ; countless other projects, musicians / sub-genres used and use this. Ah this was released also under Group Space Maker on a Sonopresse 7-inch
Windows media player allows one to adjust playback.. so one could record something at 45rpms, and adjust player to convert to 33rpms.. and vice versa. One could record at 33rpms and play ąt 45rpms or even 78, if necessary. . So one could speed it up or down a few rpm.. rotations per minute. . Adjusting speed will tweak treble considerable. . So adjust pitch, lower..
I’ve heard other people say similar things; someone told me the second album (is it called “2”?) is a good one... I have the album that this track comes from, but I haven’t paid much attention to it past this song...!
Soft machine were light years before giorgo gioro cool too soft machine invented sounds like this as did a few best kept secrets,😂 til u get it context ok giorio was working the floor dance scene his bag of goodies etc.all superb but soft machine came ist context now i love both bags of cool
Franco Guarisco everyone copied "i feel love" sound in that period, and I'm glad they did as it sparked lots of electronic music genres. daft punk might never have get their sound unless moroder released that song.
le pied de grosse caisse ne fait pas la techno comme l'habit le moine. et d'ailleurs la mélodie me rappelle plus Francois de Roubaix que Carl Craig !!!???!!! hahaha...
I don’t like this one at all. The nova album was much better. It was still weird music but at least it had a decent beat, rhythm and didn’t sound out of tune like this.

I loved this back in 1978...I still love it!! One of their best.
Sorry, but it's their worst!! It has nothing to see with the group, who played a very good progressive jazz.
We should be friends , ma’am ☺️☺️
Lei conosce Mike Ratledge, Robert Wyatt, Hopper...😮??
@@renato6055 not true.

They could avoid this performance. Otherwise they'd have played odd times. It could have been more interesting......
Gran tema. Adelantado a su época. Karl Jenkins, un maestro.
I love soft machíne, always been there in the darkest hours

Kind of surprised no one’s mentioned Kraftwerk yet...!
Is this before" I feel love" from Gorgio Moroder and Donna Summer?Love it and Yes Techno avant la lettre
I Feel Love came out in 1977, but Giorgio was doing this stuff in 1976.
The release date does not determine what came 1st.

This version is much slower than the album one.

I don’t like this one at all. The nova album was much better. It was still weird music but at least it had a decent beat, rhythm and didn’t sound out of tune like this.
Absolutely unworthy to bear Soft Machine name...
It's not bad, but their earlier stuff was some of the greatest music ever recorded.
Nonesense

i guess this is a group with the same name.....OR is the s.m , the underground jazzy group from the 60's?
Same "group", but none of the original members involved at this point.
oh! this is strange
