Robin Williams was amazingly talented and brilliant. I recently read an article his wife wrote in Neurology magazine, which was very sad and detailed about his struggles. Like you, I was struck by how it could’ve happened to him. Also, like way too many people with PD or atypical Parkinsonisms, he suffered for a long time with seemingly unconnected symptoms that nobody could quite figure out.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Robin Williams was the greatest. He took a little piece of my heart when he left the planet. I don’t know when Lewy Body Dementia developed, but Robin already had a dual diagnosis of bipolar disorder and alcohol addiction. He was dealing with a lot of issues. My biggest fear is, losing touch with reality.
Hi Jay, I hope you are doing well. My grandparents both died with dementia, although I am not sure that there may have been some other age related issues involved. My Grandpa went first, at 93 years old. He was a great man, my favorite human of all time. He taught me so much, and was an example and a ray of sunshine to everyone he came into contact with. He was on a first name basis with a good number of the nursing staff at Long Beach Memorial Hospital in CA. (I think he survived a heart attack and then 12 or 13 strokes, so he was in there a lot). My Sweet Grandma passed several years later of the same thing, but she was “only” 92. Anyway, as I often do, I have rambled off on a tangent. So Robin Williams, I remember seeing him for the first time on Happy Days, as “Mork from Ork”. I thought at the time that they were trying to fill in the rest of the season, and had made a grave error in doing so. But man, was I wrong… Mrs. Doubtfire and Good Morning Vietnam are my two faves of his work. And, lastly, I think, and believe that comparing ourselves to others, even though it’s pretty human to do so, is not good for us “Parkies”. It seems to me that if we want to be special (as we all are) then the last thing we should be doing is comparing ourselves to others. That is a recipe for getting into an endless cycle of depression and self loathing…heck, I don’t need anyone else’s problems, I have plenty as it is, thank you very much… I think you are doing a great service to those of us who do not have the technical skills to do what you do. Or the resources…so, keep on keepin on!!!
Love, love, love Robin Williams! Still can’t believe he is no longer with us! My first time seeing him was in Mork & Mindy! Very funny! I loved his performance in Good Will Hunting, too! Thanks for sharing his life and the connection to chronic illness.
