    I had no idea that there were so many steps to finishing an alcohol ink painting. I have a ton of inks that I use for making ornaments. I thought I’d give painting a try, but after seeing this, there’s no way! I’ll just continue with my acrylic painting and ornaments before Christmas. Thanks for the tutorial. You saved me from wasting my time.

      I know what you mean. Sometimes as fun as a project jay be to start the steps after are so arduous and involved it literally removes the fun. The fun has to outweigh the time and work.

    Wow! This was hugely helpful. One really good thing about this is it helps even a buyer to understand why art is so expensive. This is a long difficult process that takes a lot of care and attention. I know that resin is horrifically expensive as well. Your piece turned out amazing. Thank you for sharing.

      Glad it was helpful! Yes, too many people look at a piece of art and complain about the cost, but have no idea the time, effort, and money that the artist has to put into it to create it. At least there are some people who really do appreciate what goes into the whole process! 💜💜

    Great tutorial. I haven't used alcohol inks on their own. Only in resin. But I have always loved how elegant it looks. You do beautiful work. Your channel came up as a suggestion and I'm glad it did. I do resin and acrylic art. Haha! Yeah right. I'm a newbie. I put a topcoat of resin over my paintings and use tape on the back like you did on the cradled board. I have used my heat gun to soften the resin when the tape sticks. I don't trust myself with sharp objects. Haha! Anyway. Thank you so much for this, and all of your videos. You answer questions that I wouldn't even know to ask. You're not only a talented artist, but a great teacher as well. ❤❤❤

      Emma Isramongkonpan ☹️ I am sorry you messed up some of your work! I have done the same thing so I know how you feel! The most important thing to make sure of with your first coats of varnish is to use one that doesn’t reactivate your ink. That is why I use the Kamar first since I know it won’t do that. After that, you could use any type of finish you want to as long as it has good UV protection in it. 💜💜

    Great to see the process from start to finish. I tried one previously and got dents in it. It turns out the board I used was too thin so what you have shown really does prove that you need a substantial base for resin.

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 года назад +2

      It does take something that can handle the weight of the resin ok. I hope your future ones turn out better, but don’t forget you can fix it if it gets dimples in it. Just lightly sand the whole thing with fine grit sandpaper just to rough it up a little, extra gently in the dimples so you don’t damage the painting, then clean it off with a little alcohol and pour another coat of resin once its good and dry. Thank you for taking the time to watch! 💜💜

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 года назад

      😃 Resin is a little intimidating to start using, but it’s not really that difficult. My biggest concern is messing up a painting that I love lol. • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  3 года назад

      I have not tried the Liquitex on alcohol inks before. If you decide to try it, just make sure it's on a test piece that you don't want to keep just in case it causes the inks to reactivate or smudge. Make sure the Liquitex has UV protection in it before you try it, too. I am not sure about how much protection from fading it will give to the inks. 💜💜

    Why do u spray it with the two different krylon sprays for one painting??

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 года назад

      I use the Kamar to set the inks to keep them from reactivating and spreading. Many sealants contain alcohol and can ruin your painting. Then I use the UV Archival to help with UV protection to keep the inks from fading. Some people only the Kamar, but I prefer to add that extra level of protection since alcohol inks fade out very easily in any type of UV light, whether sunlight or light bulbs that emit any UV rays (although sunlight is the most damaging to them). 💜

    Is the alcohol ink and resin flammable? Is it safe to use a butane torch on the surface?

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 года назад +1

      Yes, both are flammable, but once the inks are dry they are no longer flammable as all the alcohol has evaporated out of it and that is the flammable part. The resin can catch fire, but you should never have the torch stop moving. It only takes a few quick passes over the resin to pop the air bubble in it. The resin does not catch fire super easily, but it can be done so use caution when doing this. I hope this helps! 💜

Also, do you think the "Krylon triple thick crystal clear glaze spray" work the same as the Karma varnish or the UV archival sealer? Yes, you can 😀. Just paint, seal, and resin. Make sure you use a heat resistant resin (not sure which is best though) if you are going to use with hot cups. I generally say to use these coasters with cold drinks, not hot, just to be on the safe side. 😊

    Are you saying to let the ink dry for a week? Thanks.

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  3 года назад

      I find that there is much less danger of the inks reactivating when I seal them if I have let them “cure” for at least 4-5 days before I seal them. It’s entirely up to you how long you wait, but remember that the more thick buildup you have, the longer it will take that part to completely dry. Also, I have had ink fade if I sealed it too soon after painting, so I just prefer to err on the side of caution. 💜

    I tried sealing my alcohol inks with resin, but the art inks ended changing colors when I applied resin. Although I cannot find Kramar varnish in our country, I have similar ones but the inks still change (fade) when I apply resin. Tried coating them with floetrol and acrylic medium, but resin somehow reacts with it😅 still trying to figure out how to keep my colors the same as they were☺️

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  Год назад

      Try looking for a water based varnish, preferably one with UV protection in it if you can't get Kamar. It's the alcohol and other chemicals in some spray varnishes that reactivates the inks. I have had resin fade mine as well if I didn't seal them first. I assume it's for the same reasons. Some chemical in the resin that reacts with the inks. Thank you for watching!!

    Thank you so much. I have used resin a lot and always just fumbled along! Just wondered if you think it's absolutely necessary to use the torch on it? I have a heat gun, but not an actual flame torch (don't trust myself with one😀). THANKS x

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 года назад

      Sorry it has taken so long to get you an answer! I am slowly working through a major backlog of comments lol. Yes, you can use a heat gun. I was the same way as you about using a torch when I first started using resin lol. I found a small hand held one that wasn't so scary to me. The only issue with using the heat gun is that it moves the resin unless you have a setting with heat but no air. Just be careful not to blow too much of your resin off the side while trying to get bubbles out. Hope this helps a little! 😊💜

    • @LorrieBrewer

      Yes, some people use triple thick. You still need to seal your paintings with Kamar first, though. Some have told me the triple thick reactivated their inks and causes them to spread some. 💜💜

    • @LorrieBrewer

      Yes you do or your resin can reactivate your inks and cause them to spread once you pour it on. You could use less coats of the varnish if you are going to resin, though.

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 года назад +1

      I cannot advise you on that. I haven’t tested without the UV protection to see if the ink colors would hold up good. My only recommendation would be to contact your buyer and tell them that it will be delayed a few days due to not receiving a protectant sealer you need so you can make sure the inks are as protected and long lasting as possible. I am sure they would understand.

      Sorry it took me a while to get back to you! I use the Kamar varnish first because it is water based and has less of a chance to reactivate the inks. I add the UV over top of the Kamar to give it some extra UV protection.

    Awesome piece Lorrie! Love your detailed instructions, so helpful! I just started experimenting with alcohol inks and love it, but not quite ready for resin. I’d like to know how you pack your art for shipping to clients? I would be very grateful if you could give me some advice on packing this resin commission. Thank you!

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  3 года назад +3

      Thank you! When I ship a resin piece I always let it cure for at least 3 weeks, longer if I can. Before boxing, I wrap parchment paper around it, then bubble wrap, before placing it in the box. I just add more bubble wrap or wadded up brown paper (or some of those air bubble sheets if I have some) if there are loose places to keep the painting from banging around and to keep the box from getting crushed so easily. I always write "fragile" on the box, but I'm never sure if that actually helps it get handled more gently or not lol. I pack my other, non-resined pieces the same way other than putting the painting between 2 sheets of cardboard if it's only matted, to help prevent bending. Hope this helps you some! 😊💜

    I was wondering can you use alcohol ink in a regular paint for geode letters 🤔

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  3 года назад

      You might just have to do some experimenting with inks and regular paint. The only time I have use my inks with other paints has been to prep a canvas and then ink over the dried paint. Some paints will react with the ink and make fractals, but I can’t remember which ones. @myriam’snature has a video on the fractals if you are interested in that. I am working on a geode alcohol ink painting right now, although mine is on Grafix craft plastic and I haven’t used any paint in it. Hopefully I will have it posted by tomorrow, but I am not sure it will help you out any. I hope you can figure out a way to create what you are seeing in your mind! 💜💜

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 года назад

      It should, but I’ve never tried that. I don’t know if there would be a problem with peeling the tape off without pulling up any varnish. It should be fine since it’s painters tape, but without having tried it myself I just don’t know. If you decide to try it, let me know how it goes 😃.

    I love your video and I’m working my way through your video. I am new to alcohol inks. I did an alcohol ink on tile that turned out great. It is a larger rectangular tile that I will spray with spray layers you recomended then put a layer of epoxy over it. It will be for my bathroom counter as a tray. My question is when I spray with the kamar varnish and kamar archival spray do you lay the art piece vertically or flat when you spray them? Thank you so much!

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 года назад

      Thank you for the compliment! How you lay your piece to spray it is entirely up to you. I usually have mine somewhat vertical because I tend to hold the board I have them fixed to while I am spraying them. If you spray them vertically, just be sure to do light coats so that the varnish doesn't run. I've had that issue once or twice when I got a little over enthusiastic with the spray lol. Hope this helps! 💜😊

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 года назад

      I hate to hear that some of your work was messed up! I always seal my paintings first with several coats of the Kamar varnish and then several coats of the UV protectant varnish before I resin them. The Kamar seals the inks from reactivating and causing a problem when you resin them. I have used a couple of different resins (Art Resin and Stonecoat Countertops) and haven't had any trouble with them as long as I seal my paintings with the spray varnishes I mentioned first. Hopefully that will help you! Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you! 💜
