- A fly-by video of a work-in-progress, reverse-engineered concept for the fictional Vandamm House as depicted in “North by Northwest” (1959) by director Alfred Hitchcock. Original house designs by Robert F. Boyle.
The movie only shows portions of this modern, architectural icon. It’s depicted as a stone, glass and steel dwelling projecting out over a rocky canyon some walking distance from the Mr. Rushmore National Monument. Production designer Robert F. Boyle reportedly found inspiration for the cantilevered design from the works of Frank Lloyd Wright. I find the house to have fortress-like qualities as well perhaps befitting the abode of an international spy /fine art dealer character such as Phillip Vandamm.
Were you looking for a fly-through of the kitchen and other never-before-seen areas of the main level? It’s available. Please see my earlier video of never before seen first-floor features such as the kitchen, service quarters, library and more:

Fantastic. This must have taken hours and hours on sketchup!!
Thank you for the kind feedback.
Yes, it’s been many hours of studying screenshots from the movie and scouring the internet for production photos or behind the scenes. A fun project too!
I made an earlier video showcasing the never-seen kitchen and other first floor features I imagine existed in the VanDamm House here in case you haven’t already seen it:

nicely done!!!!
Thank you. It’s very much been a labour of love. The house is so striking and mysterious. I’d love to see a noir-esque prequel of sorts that focused on the house and the illicit goings-on leading up to the events depicted in North by Northwest. Thanks again.
@@AJFisherDesign I know that feeling. I took 3 years of research and drafting to recreate a film accurate version of The Blade Runner Apartment... but it was satisfying to see it used in a VR world and used to create film student films...
My understanding was the MGM wanted Frank Lloyd Wright to design the house, but Wright demanded a huge fee (a share of the picture profits) so the design was left to studio designers.
Thank you for leaving a comment. I agree with your understanding as I’ve read similar while researching this design. It’s a dramatic & inspiring structure albeit fictitious, to muse on.
Considering the location of the office and carport, this would be an ideal home for an architect or other professional with clients. I would add a turntable in the garage for the Tesla.
That sounds great. A turntable would be most appropriate. I like to imagine this house has some surprises and a storied history. A hidden radio room perhaps? Thanks for the kind feedback.
I’ve been to Falling Water and was struck by there being no high ceilinged spaces (if I remember correctly), and I think in general the ceilings were quite low.
I haven’t been but it’s on my bucket list. We have one official FLW house in Oregon which I’ve visited; The Gordon House. It’s a compact Usonian. Some low ceilings for sure with high ceiling in living area.
Just for the record I live quite close to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Beth Sholom synagogue in Pennsylvania. Fantastic building but have never been inside. Some cool mid century houses nearby though most are colonial or Tudor.
As much as I live mid century modern I cannot help but believe upkeep would be very costly!
I agree! Just dusting off all those stone features and cleaning all that glass could be a full time job. I guess that’s partly why VanDamm had a housekeeper and driver. I put in a live-in apartment for them on first floor (in my earlier VanDamm house animation).
Thanks for commenting!
Love the movie but many illogicalities are in it! The Indiana prairie not nearly as flat and featureless as in the movie, the weather looks like mid summer but I think there’s a newspaper dated November, Eve got the upper berth on the train closed with him in it (!), and of course this great house in the hills of South Dakota and almost on top of Mount Rushmore! There was a TV in the house, what kind of reception would you get there in 1959…….
It’s a fun movie and you’re right there are many illogical elements especially in my area of chosen focus: the house.
Everyone says how no one expected back then an audience would dissect the scenes or even try to recreate the house virtually. Hitchcock just went w what was dramatic I guess and just enough to tell the story.
The triangular steel brackets that hold the whole house up look different when viewed from opposite sides during the movie.
You’re right no room for a house tucked up behind Mt. Rushmore let alone an airstrip. Loads more weird things I’ve noticed along the way.
Thank you for watching and sharing feedback!
Hi, thank you for uploading, this im a huge fan of the house actually, anda wanted to ask if you could perhaps let us download the model, i actually really wanna make a render of it.
Thank you for the kind feedback. The model is as yet incomplete. Does that matter? I work on completing it in my spare time. Hope to have it done by years end.
There's a CGI video of the home interior. "Tour the North by Northwest Home [CG Tour]"
@ajfisherdesign I am currently working on this in Studio to make a lego model of the house. Would you mind sharing the sketchup file so I can make sure my measurements are correct as they are translated into lego?
Hello. Sure, I will share the file. It’s incomplete…and of course I extrapolated much of the design from my imagination. I did spent a lot of time however coming up with the dimensions of the living room.
I am without power (ice storm) but DM me or otherwise lemme know how to best share it w you.
Thanks!
@@AJFisherDesign I don't think I can dm you through youtube?
@@carsonkeen2829 are you on Twitter? If so you can contact me at my handle ajf541 I can send you a “plan view” screenshots of the floors that may be most helpful.
Rendered in Sketchup?
Yes, an old version.
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wrong.
