The Waltons House: Could It Be Built?
The Waltons House: Could It Be Built?
(no audio)
Hey all! Welcome back to the channel.
This is a bit of a departure from my previous Star Trek-related work though I discovered a connection: Alexander Courage composed the Star Trek: The Original Series theme. He also served as composer for the Walton’s. Although the Waltons theme was written by Jerry Goldsmith, Courage created all the incidental music. I found this to be true when a moment of suspense in a Waltons episode had a Star Trek-like sound to it.
This brief animation is a work-in-progress study of the family home depicted in The Waltons.
Overview: The Waltons television series ran for 9 seasons from 1972 until 1981. It featured a mult...

      Thank you for the thoughtful observation. You clearly have a keen eye! The work in progress animation is a bit misleading here; there is a separating wall that is transparent. The double windows you see occupy the exterior wall of a narrow pantry between the kitchen and the back porch. It’s not terribly obvious in this video. The show never depicted the interior of this room but we see a door off the kitchen and John Walton once exited the door producing a ham. Thanks again for the view and inquiry. “G’night Everyone!”

    • @b1laxson
      @b1laxson 15 дней назад

      @@AJFisherDesign further pondering input. Pantries are a low light place to avoid sunlight feeding fungus. Modern pantries wouldn't even have a window just a light. However the Walton's house, espically the house, would date to a time where maybe they did have at least one window. It likely had outside shutters both for darkness and weather protection. One opened you'd have extra light from a new direction to better see in the pantry say during a long seasonal resorting. At least one window plus the door would be good for the occasional airing out. Mostly offering for consideration the pantry having one not two windows. That second window would take up more wall space which a pantry would want to have as another full height shelf.

    • @AJFisherDesign
      @AJFisherDesign 15 дней назад

      @@b1laxson thank you for your thoughtful and cogent feedback. You’re right. Sunlight is bad for things one is trying to preserve. I agree that a single window and seasonally employed shutters makes sense. We never saw the interior of this space thought it’s function is implied in an episode whereby John Walton enters the kitchen through the door holding a preserved ham. Thanks again for the great commentary. You clearly know your stuff! G’night!

    • @AJFisherDesign
      @AJFisherDesign 21 день назад

      Thanks for the question and view. Yes, I understand it wasn’t uncommon for folks back in the day to just build on another room. In the show they improved a shed that a son and wife later lived in. The house has such a strange shape. Almost like two houses overlapping; an older Queen Anne (kitchen/dining) and the gothic farmhouse up front. I know fires were sorta common so I imagine this house was added onto over time. Indeed, my “remodel” puts two more bathrooms in but seeks to retain the original feel, scale and configuration. Thanks again!

    Pretty cool. But given the diminutive size, it seems more sensible NOT to have a shuttle bay/ shuttle & allow the entire ship to make planet-fall.

    • @AJFisherDesign
      @AJFisherDesign 21 день назад

      Thank you for the kind feedback and view. You may be right about the practicality of having a shuttle bay on such a small ship. Especially with 2 transporter rooms and a cargo transporter. Others have mentioned the option of landing the ship entirely too. I must admit this vessel is perhaps not entirely practical as I plan to tell some stories aboard the Vortex in time and some decisions, like the shuttle bay, are motivated by both tradition and storytelling potential. It’s also a large, open area that could serve multiple functions. I envision ad hoc bowling alley on the shuttle deck when approved for R & R. Landing the ship on a planet seems so risky and a vulnerable position to be in but it’s also exciting storytelling so who knows… Thanks again for commenting. I love this ship! I want to see it on TV or in a movie. One thought, I'm not sure a ship this size would need or could accommodate a crew of over 40 people though I'm certain you've already thought everything through.

    • @AJFisherDesign
      @AJFisherDesign Месяц назад

      Thank you for the thoughtful feedback and view. This is my first serious attempt at “designing” a spaceship I want to envision inhabited the spaces during TOS. The crew # has fluctuated, so yes I’ve tried to give serious thought to many considerations. I started at 47 but I couldn’t bunk them all and no hot-bunking here. With such a small ship, the missions are much shorter. Also, crew rotation is higher I imagine. The Sparrow Class might represent an opportunity for young, junior officers to gain experience and climb ranks faster with superior performance being identified and rewarded on a smaller ship. Though the roommate situation is tight esp for lower ranks I tried to provide wider corridors to provide relief from living & working in constrained spaces on a small ship and a reasonable sized recreation and mess hall. Plus: ad hoc bowling alley on the shuttle deck! Thanks again for the feedback. I’m building a crew in my mind and on paper over time so hope to share comic book style “animated” stories in time. See you “Out There!”.

    Love it. That would make a great model kit. I'd like to see a Star Trek series featuring a smaller ship. Seeing the ever refined gargantuan ships like Enterprise E or F is cool and all but they've lost the "wow" factor for me. I'd be interested in the adventures of a smaller ship just like this. One that could even land on a planet as it looks like this one could. Now that would rock. I saw the episode where Voyager landed once and it looked totally stupid IMHO. I thought that thing was essentially the same size as the original Enterprise. Also, its saucer section is waaay too far forward for it to land without tipping forward and nosing into the dirt. But Vortex looks like a whole different story. I dig it. I'd enjoy seeing more.

      Thank you Johnnie for the view and great feedback. I’ve always been a fan of the smaller ships and would love to see a Trek show featuring a smaller starship and crew. The crew relations are more personal too. Thanks for the view and positive vibes. This has been a fun project to develop and share. The warp core is prob my favorite part of the ship. I’ve installed a couple dedicated warp plasma conduits to feed the EPS grid. I’ve also added a cargo transporter which is a fun feature for storytelling I imagine. You might enjoy the most recent animation I shared as it includes a starfield, some sound effects and title cards. I’m learning (hopefully) to make better videos to share: ruclips.net/video/W5zKmlCsZaI/видео.htmlsi=YrzBRfCYpgN_t0W7 Thanks again for the kind feedback. See you “Out There!”.

    You could also remove a few pieces of the main bridge to make it more in line with the size of the ship. If you make the bridge smaller you could probably fit a captains ready room and officers conference room around it.

    • @AJFisherDesign
      @AJFisherDesign 2 месяца назад

      Thank you for the great and thoughtful feedback. I appreciate your insight on the bridge scale. I agree it does feel a bit large for the saucer. Would probably evoke a stronger TOS feel were it reduced a bit. This is all a WIP still; at least the interiors. I do have a conference room/officers mess and a captains quarters and adjoining ready room off a central hallway I call the “command corridor” aft of the bridge. I plan to write and share some stories aboard the Vortex in time. Many of the design choices are influenced by my imagining what stories might eventually take place. Thanks again for your feedback. See you “Out There!”.

    I fully appreciate this ship's lineage, she has "good bones", and her compact design really works for me, I like the direct access to the bridge, I do wonder about the hanger deck though, very tight fit and the size of the shuttle seemed to vary, not sure the larger iteration could be accommodated, also, where do the hanger doors go when opened, again, very limited space, I do think the nacelles are fine regarding their size, but I might consider widening the pylon angles just slightly, just a few degrees, so rotating the nacelles outward and away from each other, can't wait to see her all dressed up with somewhere to go

    • @AJFisherDesign

      Thank you for the great feedback and the video view. This project is my first attempt to design-build a Starfleet style vessel. Yes, the hangar deck is a tight fit. I’ve also read about the variable lengths reported on the class F shuttle. The hangar door utilises a high-tech roll-up variety whose exact mechanism remains vague lol. Feedback from other viewers has suggested maybe work-bee type auxiliary craft might work better than a shuttle? I hope to import my model into something like Blendr in time to create more photo-realistic imagery. Suggestion for med bay, if not already, one of the long term care beds (or all?) to have ways of creating an isolation room. Could be forcefields but this is old trek. Maybe curtain mesh that seals it off. Could be stored away when not needed. A decontamination chamber setup too. Useful when landing parties brought back a sickness that turns them into lizards. As its mesh it is vulnerable. Ship is too small to have a permament one. Or you could just convert a crew quarters. Perhaps one of the crew quarters has that equipment in place and would fit the decontamination airlock in the hallway when its needed.

    • @AJFisherDesign
      @AJFisherDesign 2 месяца назад

      These are great suggestions. Thank you! I agree it would be ideal to have some way to isolate patients when necessary. I’ve also been thinking to install, perhaps in the center of sickbay, either a dedicated diagnostic bed or a small transporter pad. My transporters are on deck 3 and realising moving wounded via a turbo lift to deck 2 is not ideal. FWIW my desktop computer that I build these models with suffered a major malfunction a couple weeks ago. My files are mostly backed up but probably be buying a new computer in coming months. Thanks again for all your useful feedback. See you “Out There”!

Very mission specific like following up on worthwhile probe readings in nearby systems rather than out in the deep unexplored like a Constitution Class. I imagine the small scale could make it appropriate for training too. A courier variant seems appropriate maybe. The video description has more. This is a great concept. 👍 That said, and it has been a long time, I believe the Enterprise had life boats. These were small, two person only, and strategically placed on the outer hull (main and primary) and were in number to cover existing personal in those areas. It had all the functionality your lifeboat has.

    • @AJFisherDesign
      @AJFisherDesign 3 месяца назад

      Thank you for the kind and thoughtful feedback. I also believe the Enterprise, and other Starfleet vessels of that era, would have had lifeboats. We saw on ENT episode “A Mirror Darkly” they launched lifeboats/escape pods. Others have pointed out that the Enterprise Refit from the movies contains a scene with a wall signage labelled “lifeboat”. If they existed before & after they must have been on the Constitution Class. It’s true we never actually saw on TV but it’s fun to imagine. I can envision 2-person craft as well. Maybe different Class starships had different class escape craft? Thanks again for the view & review. See you “Out There”!
