Hi Mate, Love your videos. Next time I'm over there I would love to meet up for a coffee as my wife's family isn't that far from you. Congratulations to you and Wife on the baby and have a great Christmas. Ray
Sounds like a good plan Ray! Just look me up on Messenger or send an email to let us know when you will be in the area and we can solve the worlds problems over some incredible Sagada Arabica brewed coffee!
Great video Rick. It seems like it’s a net positive for sure, if you are averaging 1500 pesos a month. On a side note, I love the beautiful blue sky behind you in the closing minute of your video. It is beautiful there. Hopefully you, Jen and Benjamin will be there in April, when Rose and I come back up to look around again…
Good video. a person should buy an extra battery or have a small generator for these reasons. Or buy one when they take the existing for repairs. I plan to install solar next summer. Thanks for your experience
Funny you should say that. My solar guy told me I could go buy 4 car batteries for a back up until our Lithium came back, just never expected it to be 3 weeks. Was told 1 week and figured we could tough it through that. Also had no idea how bad the brownout situation really was here until we went through those three weeks. If I ever have to send the battery off again, we will have a back up solution for sure!
Hi Rick. A couple of months ago I reacted on one of your solar videos that I had my system installed by Lester & co. Back then you asked how it went but I never answered you. The reason for that was that I wanted to do that once everything was working properly. Well it still isn't 😢. I have 2 batteries and from the beginning the load has been unbalanced leading to 1 battrey being drained below 20%. Batteries and inverter have been back to the supplier twice now. The latest info I got is that the problem is caused by the inverter. Been without inverter for 2 months now. If it ever gets resolved I'll let you know.
Oh wow, that's not good at all. When you say Lester & Co. Are you talking about LES Solar? My experience has been nowhere near that and I hate you are experiencing it. Not having my battery for three weeks really sucked and we never did discover why it was discharging below 20%. But they changed some settings on the Inverter and it seems to be working just fine now. Haven't seen a single day below the baseline since they brought it back. Our DEYE Inverter has been working flawlessly and as I mentioned in the video, brownouts are a non-issue for us, when it is all working. I suggested to Ben, the engineer, that they should have their supplier provide back up parts when things need to be repaired or diagnosed, if it's going to take their supplier so long to return parts in working order. Not sure what will come of that suggestion. Very sorry to hear about your experience brother. 😕
Yes, that's indeed LES Solar. The experience sofar has been disappointing I still like the guys. I just wish they'd have a bigger influence on there supplier and keep me more up to date. 😉 The guys themselves have been very forthcoming. The roof of the house had to be replaced as it kept developing leaks on different locations and they took the panels down and reinstalled them after the new roof was installed. So no complaints about the service they have provided.
At the moment we're waiting for the supplier to return the inverter, a 16kW Deye, after they have fuxed it. Of course this is the Philippines so who knows when that will be 😂. In the mean time I'm taking it easy because getting worked up about it won't help me.
Not a problem bro!,,, yeah we are purchasing 3 hectares for $7,000 us ,,, Hopingnto make the move by next fall,,, we are sending electric tools cordless hand tools and every machinery I can think of,,, Davao Del Sur,,, north of Davao City,,, but I really wanted to build south of the city near the ocean,,, but the property is north of the city,,, 3 hrs up the mountain areas,,, a lot of American expats live on those areas,,, where it’s quite cooler,,, have a great thanksgiving bro n family,,, take good care
Excellent video Rick, I can not believe 13 brown outs in 3 weeks! Talk about an incompetent power company…I’m sorry Jenn, You and the kids had to experience it. You know, through all positives and negatives of your experiences in the Philippines you are worth your weight in Gold for the expats here !!! Hope all is well
Actually 14 brother and the day after we got solar and battery back online, we had another 12 hour brownout. Incompetent would be a kind word to use . Just had a 12 hour brownout yesterday and as they do, they cancelled school so sadly, no learning going on here either 😪. Super thankful to have our solar here. We would survive just like everyone else, just would be a heck of an adjustment. Appreciate you watching!
Since I got my mango tree trimmed, we are charging at about 6:30am now! I looked into the net metering when we first installed, but Tarelco puts a lot of road blocks up to actually being able to utilize it. I gave up at some point when I had other things going on. But, I do want to pursue it again at some point. Might even knock out our small bill each month!
Besides the road blocks the extra cost to get net-metering is so high it will take you probably 20+ yrs to get a return on your investment as long as your electricity bill is below 2000 php.😊
Ben is fully recovered brother and I am about 95%. Hard to believe I have had Covid three times now. Sure doesn't look like the two vaccines and two boosters really did much for me. Got my taste and smell back yesterday though . My email is principalbake@gmail.com Email me their brother!
If I could have afforded a different Lithium battery at the time Jim, I probably would have picked a different battery, but it was all I could do at the time. Had the installer and supplier stood behind what they sold me, it probably would have been just fine. It's done an adequate job, but really could be better.
You seem to be confusing a brown out with a black out. The term brownout comes from the dimming of incandescent lighting when voltage reduces. A blackout refers to an intentional or unintentional power outage.
Agreed. I only use the term brownout because that is what they use here. I have never heard the term blackout used here in the Philippines. But you are spot on in your definition brother!
Hi Rick, a short update on my experience with LES Solar. It has now been 5 months since they took my inverter to fix the issue of my batteries draining below 20%. Since a month now LES solar is no longer responding to my messages and calls. So now I have to look into other ways to get this resolved. I am even thinking about just ordering a new inverter through another company and have them install it. So I can and will not advice anyone to deal with LES Solar.😢 Btw is it possible to contact you to see if you have different or additional contact information on LES solar than I have?
Jan, I am glad you updated folks and as much as I have been pleased with LES, I have had my eyes opened when it comes to the timeliness of repairs. I addressed that on our update vlog so that folks won't be caught off guard. As for what you have experienced, as you and I have messaged privately, there is no justification for it. I am hopeful that any of the contact numbers I supplied, were helpful for you to make progress!
@@rickbaker0217 I'll just give a quick update here also. Finally got a response after I messaged the engineer, thanks for your information. Apparently my inverter will be replaced and the replacement is delayed through customs because of the holidays. To be continued...
What are in the Philippines do u live. I am trying to figure out if solar is worth it to us my. We live in a large house on the mountain above Carcar Cebu and only use P2600 a month electric. No Aircon.
Hey Ricky! Great name by the way . If your monthly bill is that low and it is meeting your needs, I would think solar might not be a thing for you. It would definitely take more time to see that return on your investment. Also you have to consider solar days available if living on a mountain top. I would think clouds might be an issue, but you know best. In our case, we have plenty of sun and with the poor grid here, solar was a must have for us brother. We live in Central Luzon.
So that would be around 200kW a month? In that case a smaller installation, like 5kWP and a smaller battery would get you through most of the brownouts. It would still take awhile to recoup your investment. Best thing to do is to get price offerson an install based on your daily use and work out if you think it's worth the investment
I was confused when you kept referring to 'the battery'. Other vloggers showing their setups seem to have a bank of several. Yours does indeed, appear quite large. And just one!
Sorry to confuse you brother, but it is literally one very large 200ah Lithium battery. I would have loved to have had two of them, but wasn't financially possible at the time of installation. My goal is to add to it in the future, once blessed with additional cash . For now, it is meeting our needs just fine. Hope that helps!

Cool thing is we had the funds to build the home we wanted. Buying expensive land and not being able to afford to build on it seemed to defeat the purpose. Appreciate you watching! And your Aunt must be a really good person for having called Texas home for so long 👍.
Oops, sorry Bryon, I thought you had asked me about the land price, but I just remembered you wanted the price of the solar. I get mixed up answering so many comments . Yes, I thought the solar system was reasonably priced and new we would see a return in 3 to 4 years. It has been a good decision brother!
We are still on the grid and the other reply is correct, we could integrate a generator for additional backup if we wanted to . The problem here is the grid is very unreliable and the solar with battery has pretty much made that a non-issue for us. Take care brother!

You should educate yourself further. It is not tragic if a LifePO4 battery to go below a 20% SOC. Additionally, I was shocked when you said the battery was sent back. I already knew what you were going to say later in the video. No reason for the battery to be sent back. Now as you know the inverter is how you can adjust the low voltage transfer and it is not complex. Additionally if you can access the BMS via an app, you can configure the BMS there also. Sorry to hear your issue.
My lack of knowledge on the issue is truly frustrating to me. The battery stopped performing again at around 18 months and had to be sent back to the supplier. They said the BMS and 4 of the 15 cells were bad and they replaced them. It worked well for exactly 1 week before again failing to adequately charge. I have sense discovered that the Lithium Battery they installed was not an approved battery for the DEYE Inverter, so under threat of a lawsuit, the Installers have provided me with a replacement battery and taken the Blue Carbon back to the installer. Turns out that the battery apparently does not communicate properly with the inverter. But the installer is telling me the battery should still function properly if the Inverter is programmed properly. The battery saga however, is not over. We will see what happens next.
@@rickbaker0217 Sorry to hear about your issues. Blue Carbon should have Grade A cells. If they replaced the cells the entire battery pack should be top balanced to ensure that each cell is voltage matched to within +/- .001. I would worry about mismatched voltages, or them replacing with crappy cells. If voltages are not matched properly the discharge curve will be way off on the bottom end or top end you won't pull nearly the rated power. This is because if one battery is high or low in voltage and not matched, the BMS will shut down charging and some batteries may only be at 70%, or if a battery is too low and hits the low limit cut-off, some batteries may still be at 50%. You should also look into something called a shunt which allows you to track the actual amount of charge and discharge. Ideally you should have a battery that has a Bluetooth BMS or a monitoring app for PC that allows you to monitor the individual cells. These LiFE PO4 batteries should outlast you, even if you go below 20% SOC on a regular basis. Remember they have anywhere from 3000 to 6000 cycles (battery dependent) and that is cycle is not total lifespan, that just means after that many cycles the battery is still anywhere from 70-80% of rated capacity. The battery will still work, just have less capacity and that will take years. I hope this all makes sense.
