I learned "Bound to Ride" (gCGCD) from Josh Hayes of Watauga County, North Carolina. I think Josh developed his version from recordings of Carter and Ralph Stanley. It's also been recorded by Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, Arthur Smith, Peter Rowan, and others.

What I love about these old songs is that there is just an infinite amount of variation possible. This song, as you sing it, can only be a hundred and fifty years old. But doubtless, there are a hundred other songs with very similar lyrics or melodies or structures. Whoever came up with this version was just so fluent in folk that he could just take from the tradition as he pleased and create something new. That makes it truly folk music. Great, as usual. My mother tells me that my grandpa was a hobo for a time just following the depression. I never knew him, but songs like this sure make me think of him.

I found you on RUclips about 8 years ago and I’ve listened to your songs exclusively while driving through Virginia ( blue ridge mountains) Tennessee , and Kentucky as a Canadian tourist looking at Appalachia.
I don’t play a banjo, a guitar , but no banjo. You have fans in the north , that have never played banjo and I’m one of them.
You’re one of the best and most authentic bluegrass musicians I’ve ever listened to, by far .
