That's right. He taught himself to play both left handed and right handed so that his creative choices would not be biased (and therefore limited) either way.
One of the greatest musicians of our generation - The Amazing Simon Phillips! And yes Anthony before his transformation! What a great song!! Playing like no other!
You all probably dont give a shit but does anybody know a tool to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my password. I love any tips you can give me!
Somebody borrowed my VHS of this, and never returned. Thanks for posting it! This is one of his great tracks, and he plays it even better here than on the CD.
Unbelievably good... to those who gave this the thumbs down... "such sad lives you must live... not to be able to appreciate a level so high that you will never reach".
The Great Guitarist Ray Russell. Got the split signal going on, with the stereo, and Synth effect, Plus Chorus effect. Bass man great Anthony Jackson. Simon P is so syncopated in his feels and accents. Excellent Drummer. Simon is one of my all time favorite Percussionist. Basskat Detroit MI.
I dont know who is more relaxed and more bad ass, Anthony Jackson or Simon?? They both look like they are reading the paper and absolutely killing it! I wore this album out !@ and tape !!!
Simon Phillips is one of the greatest of all time. Look at the people he plays with. If he needs a sub, he's not going to call Portnoy or Mangini, he's gonna get Gavin Harrison or Vinnie Colaiuta.
OH my God, this is one of the most incredible things I've ever seen and heard ever. Thanks to Spotify's "Discover Weekly" thing, I discovered Simon Phillips - Yesterday. Been a fan of Chick Corea, Dave Weckl, John Pattitucci etc... and Spotify suggested "Simon Phillips" on Monday and now he's one of my most favorite drummers, and this song/performance is unbelievably spectacular! Nice job Simon! Love ALL of your albums, and please come to Seattle so I can see you!
I love him since crises... Last Friday I heard him live... With this opening act...he is such a nice guy...he loves music and brings this love to the audience. Please Simon, come back again one day...with your friends. Greetings from Herford (Germany)
While it's not fair to compare drummers, I do feel that Portnoy is the most over-rated player of the past 25 years. I admire his work ethic and the fact that he remains able to make a living, but unique, original and legendary he isn't. Nor ever was in my opinion.
@@stevedrums1675 make a living??portney worth at least 8 million dollers. He also it able to play three massive prog rock gigs in one week with three different massive prog rock bands. He remembers all parts for three bands. Get a fucking life.
i "met" simon first in 1984 with mike oldfield and was simply upset of his style, drumming and musical intelligence. this thingie still makes me shiver. a masterspiece of modern drumming.
As I have commented before, Simon is really on his A game on this one - plus groove, plus musicality. I don’t think Vinnie or Weckl could put down anything better.
Its so good I could almost weep ... its one of those performances so good its also laugh out loudly excellent. Even the dodgy barnett and leggings don't put me off. Around 3 mins Omg fabulous so much great feel / timing / dynamics
This was filmed at NFL Films in the early 90's. Friends of mine worked there at the time and gave me his sticks that were used at this session. I have the uncut tapes plus 4 pair of Promark sticks that were not used. I also received a copy of his solo album title protocol on CD(a new format at the time). I listen to that album over and over, Simon arranged and played keyboards on that album. The guitar parts you you hear were originally done on keyboards by Simon.
Man those Tama Artstars sound good. Tama has come out starclassic maple, then Bubinga, now we have the star line with walnut, maple and Bubinga all with short lugs, wood air hole and painted badging all for allowing more resonance. BS These artstars sound better than all of them.
The art of being ambidextrous... Simply incredible
That's right. He taught himself to play both left handed and right handed so that his creative choices would not be biased (and therefore limited) either way.
@@catkeys6911 Indeed it is really incredible, for me it will always be the best along with Jeff porcaro
This guy is at the highest level achievable. And he’s there alone. Nobody can do what he does. Just WOW!!!
Thank you so much for this 👌🏿
Simon Phillips 👌🏿👌🏿
Anthony Jackson is The Electric Bass GOAT! 🔥
One of the best drum videos ever made. On all levels.

Saw him so many times, always remember, so lucky to be on Simon's era. Thx so much
He was always two decades ahead with his sound.
Drumming level:
Beginner - intermediate - advance - simon philips
He was 18 when he played with Stanley Clark and the list goes on and on. Still together with Vinnie my all time favorite drummer...

Absolutely. Portnoy could have been one of these guys, and it annoyed me for a while. I also think Jeff Porcaro would have shined in this as well.
He's the only drummer I could stand to see fill in for Neil Peart if Rush ever decided to go one with someone new on the kit.
Simmon Phillips IS the best that is for sure and for certain.
@@peacemaker4839 totally agree! the only drummer I seriously follow
Dave weckl maybe
Wow! What a super performance! I've never heard a drummer better than this guy. And his compositions are awesome as well!

@lespaul678 The bass player is Anthony Jackson. He is indeed awesome! He also played with Steely dan, Donald Fagan, Metro and many others.
I went to his drum clinic in the 80s where he featured protocol 1 , mind blowing, sat right in front of him..
Awesome!!!
Yes Anthony !
Truly.... This is Art in Motion...
Indeed the SOUND is amazing! Most drummers wouldn't be able to create this sound in the studio, let alone on RUclips...

Wow, just wow!!!! Pure class!
