- The Nitto Albastache is one of the most polarizing handlebars on the market. People either love it or hate it. It promises to be the drop bar alternative for people who hate drop bars but still want a semi-aggressive riding position. But it does come with some quirks: namely, the ideal fit is meant to be ridden with the bars level with the saddle. I tried the Albastaches with a slammed stem to see how they'd fare as an aggressive non-drop bike handlebar.

I subscribe to the view that you can’t own enough variety handlebars if you ride fixed. It’s the one way you can easily go for a VERY different ride with a quick swap. I own 13 with 10 varieties, realistically could get it down to 9 lol
I like alt bars, just because gives your bike a unique look. Just about every bike on the road has either drop bars, flat bars, or risers. Sure, those bars are so common precisely because they're the best designs, but I'll gladly adapt to sightly less efficient bars for the originality points.
Why not flip the stem to raise the bar (closer to suggested fit)???

It's great to see a review for the 'stache bars option. These would appear to give more riding options considering these bars are suited to face back or face forward. I have always ridden fixed with bullhorn bars (reverse mustache-ish?). These are my preference when out of the saddle, climbing, and also as an aid to slow down. Safe, reasonably dangerous riding to you! ✌️
Two finger "Paul's Love Levers" also work with "mustache bars" when you have brakes. There's also drop bars with fake hoods. My favorite non-drop is a slammed narrow flat bars with ergo bar ends.
Definitely one of the nice things about fixed gear/ single speed life is how easy it is to swap bars!
I prefer the alt bars that have around 45 deg of back sweep so far. Also rotating them back slightly makes them that much more comfortable. 👌
Soma Sparrow bars are kinda similar but lean more towards the albatross shape. Pretty comfy and you can flip them to have rise/drop
I ride my Fuji Feather with Velo Orange porteur bars, which are narrower compared to yours, and I have brakes on the bottom side of the handles - the ends bascially (I moved the levers that were installed on the middle section of the drop bars my bike came with), and it's super comfortable (I commute, go grocery shopping, ride recreationally on bike, nothing long-distance or athletic), allows to have a front basket installed, and looks good
For my style of riding the Soma 3-speed II "Moustache" bars are fabulous. The familiar slightly aggressive mustache shape, but 22.2 diameter for a city/mtb lever. Because brakes are good even on a fixie! Though my fixed currently has Velo Orange porteur bars and I love them
I haven't tried moustache bars, but it seems to me that bar-end break levers would work better than drop bar breaks. Do you know if anyone has tried that?

Good options for upright riding would be handle bar similar to Raleigh pattern north road or north rounds
Kona Handplant bars are the best for me, keeps the wrists at the most neutral angle. For long offroad days its perfect, with about 12cm of drop, and running them upside down.
I know that you're running fixed, but have you seen a moustache handlebar with bar end brake levers (inverted)? Simply amazing!
This is dope man. Alt bars always seemed goofy to me but now that I know they have function and utility they automatically seem less goofy.
I had these on a 90s mountain bike in the early 2000s. It was fine on the road, but sketchy on dirt. Went back to a more conventional setup.
can you flip the bars upside down to get a rise of 1 " insted of a drop?
I love my bulhorn handlebar, similar to the tops of drops and you still have a more aggresive position on the horns

I've adjusted such bars so that bar ends are a bit closer to ground than front curves. I feel it's more natural for my wrists. If they'd be level to ground pressure would be concentrated at abductor digiti minimi.
That handlebar you're using frankly is not a bit amusing to me, but to each their own!
I really wanted to like the Albastache bars on my fixed gear, but I just ran into so much hand pain after a couple miles. I kind of wish they were wider or just flared out a tad more and less straight back at you. Maybe it would have been nice to be able to try different stem lengths or something. I run a quill stem, so it's not quite as easy when you want to experiment. I like the Albatross bars on my 80s touring rig, but I just haven't found my favorite alt-bar for fixed gear use yet.
Or you can use a flat bar or riser bar with detachable handle bar end to make it look like a bull-horn for aero position.
I just ordered one for my schwinn continental. I am interested how I will adjust to this bar ove time. changed the bike over to downtube friction shifting. I might go back and make it a single speed if I evey get some flat ground like you.

@@ricksanchez8259 yea I don't get how they're not as popular as they should be, they're great for control, aggressive, easy in traffic, you can get in the horns and great power transfer

Great handlebar discussion Zach, but lets get down to the more important feature which is in fact your haircut. Now I’m English and I’m pretty sure that if you went for an evening out in say Liverpool, that an altercation may well take place culminating in a few nights in the Intensive care unit of the local hospital. The great news of course is that our health service is totally free and wouldn’t cost you a penny or a dime as you would say. Like the earings as well!
