Acheron is a river in the region of Epirus and crosses the prefectures of Ioannina, Thesprotia and Preveza.
The sources of Acheron are many. Its first sources come from the snows of Mount Tomaros in the Prefecture of Ioannina (maximum altitude 1,986 meters), and its other sources come from the mountains of Souli and the mountains of Paramythia in Thesprotia. Important springs are also those of the village of Glyki in Thesprotia. The Acheron empties into the Ionian Sea, in the village of Ammoudia in Preveza, where it forms a delta, from which the two main marshes of the area are formed, the marshes of Splantza and Valanidorrachis.
Acheron, due to the Necromancy of Acheron, the ancient tradition and the environmental value, attracts thousands of visitors from its sources to its estuaries. Its length is 52 kilometers while its waters irrigate approximately 85,000 acres, of which 28,000 are in the Prefecture of Thesprotia and 57,000 in the Prefecture of Prevezi. The upper course of the river is also called "Mavropotamos", while the lower part, passing through the plain of Fanario, is also called "Fanariotiko". There is also the name Kamariotiko river.
In ancient times, it was believed that Acheron is the river whose crossing, according to ancient Greek mythology, was made by the "soul carrier" Hermes, delivering the souls of the dead to Charon to end up in the kingdom of Hades. Each soul, crossing Charon's ferry, had to give an obolus for the transport, while the case of Menippus, mentioned by Lucian, as the only one who crossed the Acheron without paying, is remarkable. On its way, the river Acheron crossed with Pyriflegethon and Kokytos, in the current village of Mesopotamos, at the point where the ancient Necromanteion of Acheron is located. The jurisdiction of the Necromancy of Acheron was different from that of Delphi and Dodona. Its purpose was not to provide an oracle but to facilitate the communication of visitors with the souls of their dead relatives. Acheron, Kokytos and Pyriflegethon were the three rivers of Hades.
In the video, we show you snapshots of the boating that starts from the village of Ammoudia and for a distance of 2 kilometers, where the river remains navigable.
You will be able to see many characteristic elements of the fauna and flora that exist along the river!
Thank you to the crew of the "Dimitris" boat for the tour!
