Schmidt worked (as a cellist) in a first-class orchestra for many years (the Vienna Philharmonic/Court Opera), and he always composed his music - even an early work such as this - with such an orchestra in mind.

Uma belíssima obra, que deveria estar mais presente no repertório dos grandes interpretes

If this is the Capriccio recording, the orchestra is Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz conducted by Alexander Rumpf, recorded in Berlin in 2016.

I didn't think it was, but it sounds very similar on closer inspection. If so, I'll remove this video.

this is definitely based on his opera Notre Dame

The other way around, more likely: Schmidt began work on Notre Dame a few years after this.
