I completely disagree with you. The message of he film is very clear, even if you disagree with it: we, the audience, are the ones to blame for the toxic internet culture. Shure, youtubers can be manipulative and attention seeking machines, but they can do so only as long as we allow them to. We are the ones giving them the attention that they crave, we are the ones creating the social climate where people get constantly judged based on purely superficial criteria, we are the ones judging. Link forcing that girl to push the red button wouldn't have any real consequences if it wasn't for the fact that the whole internet is a shit hole and the girl knows exactly what is going to happen if she uploads that photo. And I know you've said that people who suscribe to those toxic channels are mainly little kids who just don't know better, but I don't think that's actually true. And even if it was true, what about instagram and other social media? Are they also toxic just because of the little kids using them? What about Twitter? You get my point.

I like that you mentioned King of Comedy as an older film that better tackles this subject matter. An even older one, which Mainstream seems to take its structure from is Elia Kazan's A Face in the Crowd, starring Andy Griffith.

my heart tightened when he said 'kids are stupid'. for example, are children too stupid to realize that they are seen as stupid?
there is incredible child hostility in the culture, children are constantly humiliated, this is not done without purpose.
children understand that they are humiliated and they start to see themselves as inferior, ashamed of being children, and they are easily abused.

I remember a video of someone saying that children have less rights than animals and are seen as objects. It amplified my want to be the best i could be to my future children. Way too much people had f*ed up childhood, it's never really talked about irl, i want them to have a life i didn't have. I want them to look back on their childhood and be happy.

I'll have to give this a watch soon. Once you said the director did Palo Alto, it jumped to the next on my list. The whole movie really is a vibe that I highly recommend. It does have week moments but for Gia Coppola first movie, i say it hits where it wants to be. I even had a Tumblr page dictated to movie stills and it would always be popping up.

i loved this film but i can understand why people didn't. there's a lot of disjointedness about it that could rub people the wrong way. it sometimes veers heavily into absurdism which a lot of people don't have the ability to get past, which is valid.
idk i'm super jaded about youtube personalities and this film represented the emotional disconnect SO WELL.

Your point about the third lead character being useless in the movie is so good! That, and the fact that Frankie being even more obsessed with Link at the end would have given the audience chills in the final smile.
The plotline of Link being exposed as a narcissist via the story of the birth mark girl, Isabelle, was super weak. As an audience member, you know in real life that people with big ugly parts actually DO post them on instagram, and get lots of likes for it. So, this woman being so distraught that she kills herself and gets a vigil, like a school shooting victim, is absurd. Real life youtubers garner a huge list of victims whose addresses were doxed, who have been harassed on streets, etc. And I think Link's neurotic character was ripe for this type of accumulation of hatred. Camera should've focused on Link more, as he has these moments of gaining attention, exploiting attention, and seeking attention from an audience that he doesn't even meet. That's what I was hoping for in this film.

You've obviously never seen Broadcast News. That is the reason for the love triangle, it is lifted shamelessly from that film. Right down to the "real, unedited video" exposure and the "he seems like a nice guy but is really the devil" confrontation. Except that was a very good film, with fully developed characters with clear motivations. This was just a very bad attempt at films that have done this kind of critique so much better, going back to A Face in the Crowd.

I liked how this movie communicated the message that we are tearing eachother apart with social media and younger people are being given this false reality which is messing with their heads. I also liked how it shown how hypocritical people can be, they can look down on someone who has destroyed someone mentally through social media but most likely they are doing exactly the same through comments on posts. They were all saying bad things about Andrew Garfields character when it came to isabelle but most likely a lot of them contributed to how she felt. He was in the wrong for putting her in to that situation and emotionally distressing her but so were the public for driving her to do that because the only way it can get like that is if there are a majority of people trolling and making her feel like she cant post that picture of her nature self. It upsets me that people feel like they need to cover themselves up because of the way the world views appearance.
