I heard this song on the radio for the very first time 15 minutes after my mother was taken away in a straight jacket by nice young men in white coats. She spent the following 6 months in a mental hospital. That's what they did in those days when someone had a bad reaction to certain kinds of psychedelic drugs that doctors used to prescribe but are now banned.
this song came out in 1966 and was banned on the radio and removed from stores because of its content, people bought it as fast as they could before it was taken away ha ha .. ...lol...... media said that the song would ''cause people mental anguish''.. and meanwhile in Viet Nam...
Once, when my dad was driving me home, the radio broke, and this started playing as it started to rain. Hearing this with static in a cold car when it was dark and raining was terrifying when I was 8

For a couple of years I worked at a state mental hospital. It was when this song was popular and it was often on someone's radio as the patients went about their day. They didn't seem to pay any attention.

The other day at work, an ambulance was passing by, and I began singing this song. The young People around my were quite confused and disturbed, and after I explained it to them, they were relieved that I wasn't losing my mind and had to be taken away myself. Ah, the beauty of age and experience!
Napoleon XIV: You're laughing. I'm spiraling into madness and you're laughing. You think my descent into complete insanity is funny? The dog: Yeah, and I'm tired of pretending it's not.
I really don’t like tiktok, it bugs me, and I knew this song from when I was younger and decided to look it up and now apparently tik tok has taken it? To the funny farm, probs.

Yeah sure, this is after the holocaust just for context. Just a quick disclaimer for ppl. I'm here to spread narcissism awareness, because beneath these types of comments there's usually lots of arguments.(there's nothing wrong with your comment) I'll come here to make one thing clear to those snowflakes who think using the word "narcissist" to not clinically diagnosed narcissists(unless those people show clear signs of narcissism) isn't ableist: Narcissism is a disorder and it should be recognized as one, some people pass it off as a personality trait but it's a DISORDER calling someone narcissist because they're sassy or something is ABLEIST.
This song scared the shit out of me as a kid when it came on the radio once. I’ve hated it ever since. Thanks for the upload so I could show other people who don’t believe me.
Imagine a man in an asylum in a padded room in restraints singing this still thinking he's just in a weird part of his house while he sings about his son who ran away that he had forgotten was even his son thinking his dog was the one who left. I'm a shit author but it's still disturbing.
Lol, you get my like just for that last bit of self awareness. (Not calling you a shit author, just think its funny since so many commenters try to sound so deep)
YOU are YOUR Greatest Hero. YOU can Only Depend On YOU. It's Now YOUR World. Go Out and Make IT What YOU Want It to Be. You are not abandoned, YOU ARE FREE.
This song was part of a hazing ritual I endured while pledging my fraternity. We had to stand in the house’s basement with our heads bowed, in complete darkness, with the song playing on repeat at an absurdly loud volume. You start to lose your sense of time.
Back in those days it was concidered rude and offensive, but of all the novelty music of that time, that one really stood out, that song takes politically correct and throws it out the window.
it was not in the least bit rude or offensive, it was intended to be funny and everybody understood it was funny, kooky and weird and all the kids ran around singing that song along with every other song we heard on the radio.
Did anyone else learn this as like a young kid? Like I remember having this on a cd and loving it when I was younger. But now Im listening to it for the first time in years and damn...who thought that was a good idea
Yes, I had the exact same thought! I used to listen to this as a kid. It was on a cassette with other songs from the 50’s and 60’s. I just thought it was a fun song. Now, it’s pretty dark and creepy listening to it as an adult.
I heard this song on the radio a long time ago and I thought it was hillarious, but I never knew who this "Napoleon XIV" guy was. I looked him up, and if anyone thinks this song is crazy, they should listen to "March Off To Bedlam." Oh man, THAT one is legitimately disturbing!

Ooooooh! i'd completely forgotten about that! 😎 Now *that's* a blast from the past! Never owned a copy but remember when it came out; once in a blue moon they'd play the flip side on the radio. Thanks!

My older brother , who would act as crazy as the song, would play this when I was a kid in the 70s over and over. He could really play the part and still did til he passed on my bday 3 years ago. We even played this at his celebration of life. But it's carried on by his oldest daughter and her kids, his grandchildren. Always gives us a chuckle . Who would've thought?
so my boyfriend got me to listen to this...it freaked me out. he'd just been in a mental hospital. he listens to this to annoy me it means nothing to him. the thing is he doesn't know I ha e been thinking of putting myself in a "funny farm" recently because of the thoughts in my head.. I'm know listening to this on repeat...
My mother would not let us play this record. We had a second cousin who had been hospitalized several times for mental illness. I do remember that the flip side of the 45 was the song recorded backward.
I showed this to my grandma, since it was made in 1966, and she said that it was a song that she and her friends would sing it a lot - apparently it was really popular back then
Show your grandma "Judge Rex D. Stacey". Then, you'll hear him cry about being taken away to the funny farm in the courtroom. Access "Judge Rex D. Stacey". He's a lunatic for a judge in Scott County in Minnesota.
I remember this song from the 60's. They played it on the radio forever. After hearing it a hundred times they were ready to take us all away.
Take them all? where? why do they reproduce it so much for that time?
In case you missed the lyrics right on the screen, it's "They're coming to take me away to the funny farm", which is slang for a mental hospital.

This song use to scare the crap outta me back in the mid 70s when i was a young kid. When his voice would change, and go up in pitch. And the parts where he would echo as he finished a verse. It just painted a scary picture in my head of this guy who kept saying, "They're going to take me away.." Still remember playing this on some record I had back then. It was unnerving. Even now listening to it, the kid inside still gets chills from it. Brings back sharp, crystal clear memories. But its a very memorable song. It got stuck in my head forever, ha ha ho ho hee hee.
They’re not going to ..... they’re COMING TO TAKE HIM AWAY!
Get the lyric right. It is "They're coming to take me away" not "They're going to take me away". Stop being a victim of false pretenses to fit your personal agenda.
I was looking through the comments to see if anyone else gets creeped out by this. Im also a child of the 70's. My daughter knows that it still scares me and she turns it on anyway 😆😠
@@vinceolshove1499 You need to take like 3 chill pills, man.

Perfect soundtrack to a mental breakdown. 10/10, sing along while crying, scare the schise out of your family.
Omg yas
mental breakdown is also a good song for that as well... and to scare your family you can just plug it up to a speaker and play and ear rape sound track
It’s crazy how many people don’t realize he’s talking to his dog

I'm a total basket case. I've been in the nuthouse a few times for getting too drunk & raising hell. To cope with the other loons, I joke with the nurses by singing stuff like this.
As a 12 year old I would always fall asleep with the radio on-in the middle of the night when this song would come on I immediately woke up and struggled to turn the radio off-this song (and Night of the Minotaur) scared me senseless.

this hits different when you’ve actually been involuntarily hospitalized
I heard this song on the radio for the very first time 15 minutes after my mother was taken away in a straight jacket by nice young men in white coats. She spent the following 6 months in a mental hospital. That's what they did in those days when someone had a bad reaction to certain kinds of psychedelic drugs that doctors used to prescribe but are now banned.

Back in those days it was concidered rude and offensive, but of all the novelty music of that time, that one really stood out, that song takes politically correct and throws it out the window.
