People say it's the opposite but for me it's harder on the treadmill. Might have to do with keeping the same pace. Also it takes me a few days to readjust if I use the treadmill exclusively for a while and switch to outside. I feel like new born Bambie when I switch to outside lol
Gee, I never thought about running on a treadmill as a privilege, but you're totally right. Ok, I promise not to call it the dreadmill any more 😂😂😂 In all seriousness, I totally agree with you on all 3 points, esp #3. When I run outside, even though I'm starting to be able to (roughly) keep certain paces by feel, I bet if I ran on a treadmill more, that muscle memory would build a lot more quickly!
you all probably dont give a shit but does any of you know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account..? I somehow lost my login password. I love any tricks you can give me
I train on my treadmill around 5 months out of the year. I am fortunate to have a commercial model treadmill (Precor TRM-833). In the northeast where I live we have snow, ice and other factors that you pointed out (work, early mornings, etc.). Treadmill running gives me the opportunity to watch podcasts, listen to music and sometimes catch a favorite show. I typically run 8 miles a day on one 6 days a week. Treadmills are an effective tool that helps me log the miles when the weather and other factors keep me from going outside. All good points Sage. Thank you for bringing them up.
Hello Sage, just want to say that i have follow your 16 weeks advance 80k - 100k plan and was able to run a ultramarathon 111k(68.9miles) race in 14h23min. 2 years ago i run the same race in 19h42min. With your advanced boston marathon plan i was also able to run my fastest marathon so far. This year i will surelly crack the sub 3h marathon with your plan. Thanks a lot Sage :D
I have a love- hate relationship with the treadmill. Great for convenience & bad weather. I love doing intervals on it - set it and forget it. It gives me precise comparison to past workouts. It is boring, but I find the mental focus it helps to develop makes running outside seem easier and even more fun. It can be great, tough physical and mental training.
So much value in this, the weather in England is pretty poor and the country roads around where I live can be pretty dangerous with blind bends so I often run on the treadmill.
Treadmill is a lifesaver here in the Midwest. Having a crazy brutal winter.....25 below zero. Everything covered with ice. Also I find as an older runner, treadmill helps with injury prevention. It’s a forgiving surface.
Flagstaff blizzard = bonus Sage content! Good stuff! I like the idea that it's a privilege. I always looked at it as a tool to use. Any type of run is better then not running!
Hi Sage, Thanks for this video. I also begrudgingly embraced treadmill workouts. One key value of them that you did not mention is the ability to hone in on your movement/biomechanics in a way that you can not do outdoors. Particularly, using a treadmill with mirrors in the front and sides has allowed me to identify weaknesses asymetries, and misalignments that were compromising my efficiency and making me injury prone. I agree that throwing a towel over the display is useful, but instead of zoning out to a podcast or other distraction, I would recommend utilizing treadmill time to focus acute attention on one's technique.
I agree, treadmill is definitely a luxury. I’d rather be outside more often than not but I’m certainly grateful to have the option when outside conditions don’t allow for a run because I’m one cranky gal if I can’t get my runs in 😆
When I absolutely have to opt for the treadmill, I always put the incline to max and try to maintain my average tempo road pace (7 min/mi). I also set my mileage equivalent to 1.5x, so 1.5 miles on the treadmill = 1 mile outside. Decent workout.
My humble opinion on the treadmill. I agree with Sage's opinion that running on a treadmill is less difficult than running outside, the non-existent air friction is a significant advantage. Yesterday I had to run a 24km outside the day after the storm which left more than 30cm of snow, I had to run a 12km at 5: 21m / k and another 12km at 4: 20m / k, so I decided to run the slow part outside, and the fast part on my treadmill, that's why I like the treadmill, when the specific training must be well executed I choose the safety of my treadmill than to be an overachiever. Train smarth! 👍
This has been one of the worst winters for winter running in Wisconsin in a while, it's either huge blizzards or ice storms every other day for the past couple weeks. Sheet metal screws and the dreadmill have been key components in my training for sure!!
Well said. The Treadmill allows a sensible Lydiard Style Base Training and with a cheststrap and heartrate data with a progressive aerobic run from 65-85% max h.r etc or a nice 70% heartrate reserve 90min run. Great video Sage! Cheers from Aus :)
I was looking for opinions on outdoors vs treadmill as a returning runner. I never would have put "getting eaten by a bear" on my pros and cons list - excellent advice.
Sometimes that treadmill can be your friend. I’ve had to use them in both extreme heat (in a hotel in Las Vegas last August when it was 108 degrees at 7am!), and when it is too icy and snowy outside. I definitely prefer outside, but the treadmill can save the day sometimes!!
Sage alluded to it in the video, the biomechanics of running on a moving belt vs. stable ground are just different, I'd like to see more information on this aspect of treadmill running. There's also the lack of downhill running on most treadmills, which can be important if you train mainly on a treadmill and then go run an outdoor race and the quads just aren't ready for it. The treadmill also adds the element of staying on the belt, which can make a treadmill dangerous, one bad step to the side and you're pulling the safety cord. I think this contributes to making treadmills mentally exhausting vs. running on the open road.
The lack of downhill running on a treadmill (decline) depends on the treadmill. My treadmill has a 6% decline and a 40% incline. I can mimic quite a substantial range of outdoor running scenarios. The staying on the belt fear goes away the more you run on it. To me running on my treadmill in my own home is a true privilege.
I like running on a treadmill because I can control the temperature. My marathon will be in warmer weather but it is really cold outside right now. I can turn up the heat inside and get that warmer training done even in the winter.
Forget running outside. It reaches negative 40 celsius here in Montreal and you don't get brownie points for running outside when it's that cold out. Better and more consistent quality you can produce on the treadmill. Not into slipping on black ice when it's dark out, and freezing. Nope!
I’m in Michigan, so some winter mornings, I need to use my tread mill. Sage, I live near Hanson’s in Utica. I have an iPad and I use Run Social. This past Tuesday morning, I fired up the tread mill and iPad, and ran a portion of the London Marathon!! A great distraction while on the tread mill.
Last year marathon prep was treadmill every run except the long run outside. During the race my muscles and joints weren't used to pounding the pavement. This year every run has been outside and my muscles are beat to death. Time for some treadmill runs.
Other than inclement weather, running outside, to me, is far superior. There is a lot less hamstring engagement on a tread, and it is not a good substitution for outside running. I would only see it as actually convenient for no competitive runners. I would highly recommend outside for athletes as the tread does not mimic outside terrain in any way. However, it does come in handy within reason. Thank you for your opinion on the matter.
Great stuff as always Sage! If I had access to a treadmill this winter I definitely would have used it. I get a sore throat and irritated airways after my runs when it gets really cold outside. My mileage through the winter would probably have been a lot higher if I had this luxury. On the flip side I think the winter running builds some mental fortitude for me that might come in handy when conditions improve. This is my first winter running as I just started running last summer, volume(and intensity) has been very low as I've struggled with some hard to define infections ever since last fall, BUT my volume is infinitely larger then last winter, so there is progress!
Good stuff Sage! Ever since I started running there’s been a place for treadmill running usually due to weather but occasionally for a specific uphill tempo workouts. I also lived in upstate New York about 45 minutes from Ithaca/Cornell and I know what you’re talking about with those winters and going up the hill to Cornell
Your comment about stride changes at 8:40 is interesting. The difference between running on TM, road, and trail, according to Jeff Dicharry, PT, at the UVa, is very small, and can only be differentiated by high-tech TM set-ups that are capable of differentiating ground force reaction...there are very few of those treadmills...one at UVa, one at West Point. Might be one's/two's in other locations, but few/far between. Of course, the blessing of being out of the elements is countered by the usually too-warm temperatures of gyms. I've run into the occasional TM that has a fan, but they're not that good for cooling or simulating wind resistance. (Hello, LifeFitness?) One really good reason to use TM for part (not all) of training is the ability, not only to control the variables - which you've covered quite well here - but also to bail on a workout if the runner feels they are doing damage...risking injury. Dicharry was asked about what factors caused injuries, and he mentioned that too many runners set the TM at too high a speed, which leads to overstriding/injury. I've found that Daniels' VDOT pace ranges are great for figuring out what are good TM training paces. But, if given the Hobson's choice between NOT running because of lousy conditions and running on a TM, I'll take the TM. Thanks for all the insights and keep posting cool stuff. I particularly like the trail running scenery.
Like you I prefer to run outdoors but,I find the treadmill useful if I want to do Tabata type training-hopping on for 20 seconds and stepping off for 10.Thanks.
same thoughts i had considering joining a gym whilst the weather is cold. and not possibel to run outside whenever i want to due ot the weather. maybe a month membership then it will be warmer next month.
Except for races, all of my training runs are on a treadmill. I like running on an incline because the workout is much more intense, and I can build up my quads and gluts (something I can't do running on flat surfaces outside). I can run when the weather is bad, and when it's dark outside. I don't get hot because I have a large fan going in front of the treadmill the whole time. I avoid "treadmill boredom" by running to "virtual runs" on a tablet in front of me (there are many of them on RUclips). All in all, treadmill running is a great way to train.
When I trained for one of my marathons I ran 3:08 and 50% of my training was on the treadmill. Lots of factors and everything you said is definitely right. Now as a dad, treadmill running is way better than pushing a stroller and also it’s so much easier on your body that running on a hard surface.
I ran on snow/ice in Dec/Jan this winter, and I came away with two separate injuries. The push off is tougher with a slippery and unstable surface, and my body didn't like the required change in form.
I always found I could run better times on the treadmill vs outside and it was deceptive coming back outside after a hard winter of only treadmill running. I was consistently running sub 20 for a 5k on the machine and thought it would transfer.... nope. Couldn't even crack 21:15 for the first month or two lol
Really good video, some really good points made, especially about covering up the numbers on the treadmill. I imagine this was inspired by the idiot on twitter giving you some stick for using a treadmill though, hopefully this will shut them up!
Bunch of friends use Zwift and love it, I'm a cheap bastard and just have regular bike trainer and have been using CTCX channel on RUclips and it's been fantastic, highly recommend!
I am aiming for first place in my division, I have a race on June 9 and I have been practicing on a treadmil. The race is on road so do you think I will get any sort of benefit training on a treadmil for a road race? Or should I start running on road to train for my race. If you need to know the distance, it is a 5K.
i just had to move my workout indoors a couple days ago because of icy conditions... didn't go so well. i was only trying to run tempo at just under 7 min pace and almost suffocated, it was so hot, and loud. hah. ended up bailing and doing the workout the next day in warmer weather.
I wished I had a treadmill, I get home after 9 most days after school and class. If I try to run in the hour or so I have free between my class in the evening I would have to go to a park pretty far from where I live with many people one to three days a week. I would run around where I live but there was a body dumped about 500m from my house so....Yeah complaining about treadmills is a super first world problem.
My marathon PR is 3:43:00 is it possible to get that down to the low 3s despite my age (37)? I don't know how true this is, but I've heard that your athletic performance peaks in your late 20s. Anyone have advice or personal stories in regards to this? Thanks!
For sure you can still improve I did 3.46 at the age of 50 I'm 52 now but still suspect I can sneak in under 3.30.Also my bro when he was 38 ran 3.13 on the same course.Stay fit and healthy bro you'll get faster
Haven't watched yet but I agree with the description. It's always really mentally tough for me to do a longer run on a treadmill, or even a shorter one to be honest.
Off topic Sage, but do you and Sandi know what MBTI personality types you both are? I'm an INTJ and my partner is an INFJ. We love our training, running/cycling and totally geek out on the numbers, training plans, experimenting with our WFPB vegan diet etc and generally finding new challenges. Love your videos and congrats to both of you at your recent race at Moab. ✌🌱
I think only snobby running purists are going to be the only ones that ignorantly say “you should never train on a treadmill, you will never reach your goals doing that” If you have a good treadmill that can get to a decent incline, you can do the vast majority of your training on that And get great benefit
How many miles do you do a month? What's your average pace? Your fastest half marathon time is? I'm trying to see if what you say matters. I'm guessing it does not.
Yeah same, I'm lucky to live somewhere with mild weather all year round. Would choose running in the rain over a treadmill every time, it's a luxury I don't want
What an incredibly boring video! Who is it aimed at? Who needs to be told that running outside is more dangerous than running on a treadmill? If you want to make an interesting video about running on a treadmill, have a look at Zwift.
@@ramboray80 Sure, but there's no need to make a video about it. I saw the title of this video and expected some kind of sensible comparison. I don't need to waste 10 minutes watching a video to learn that it's safer and more convenient to run indoors.
I don't get the hate for treadmills. You can run in a nice air-conditioned room at the exact pace that you want, at the exact steepness that you want, while watching your favorite show, or youtube. People say that they're bored when running on treadmill, but I'm bored running outside because there's nothing to watch besides stupid nature or buildings and roads. And if I hurt myself, need to go to the bathroom, or otherwise need to get off I can. There are so many more benefits of the treadmill. Treadmill good.
I did over 500 miles on my treadmill last year and I have over 100 miles on it already this year. It gives me some of the best workouts I can get.
Who else thinks its harder to run on a treadmill than outside (in normal running conditions)?!?
Robert L. Hargrave III me too running a 5 minute on a treadmill is so hard but in the real world it’s so much different
@@mizzydas7855 5 minute pace is hard regardless! Haha!!

My marathon PR is 3:43:00 is it possible to get that down to the low 3s despite my age (37)? I don't know how true this is, but I've heard that your athletic performance peaks in your late 20s. Anyone have advice or personal stories in regards to this? Thanks!
@freEvo8 Great news! Thanks for sharing!
For sure you can still improve I did 3.46 at the age of 50 I'm 52 now but still suspect I can sneak in under 3.30.Also my bro when he was 38 ran 3.13 on the same course.Stay fit and healthy bro you'll get faster
Thanks for your experience!@@davidcheeseman992
Haven't watched yet but I agree with the description. It's always really mentally tough for me to do a longer run on a treadmill, or even a shorter one to be honest.
It seems when I run on the treadmill, my knees don't hurt as much, for me treadmill is better, but I do run outside sometimes.
Plus it's toxic to run in my city with the pollution levels so high.
Treadmill running is DEFINITELY better for your knees. Think long term.
RIP our treadmill can’t do faster that 6 min pace 😂 no tempo runs 😂
Anyone have issues with injury on the treadmill because of the change of form?
Treadmills...anyday anytime
It all depends on the type of treadmill. Some are good some are crap.
Treadmill is physically easier but mentally harder.
They might work better with VR goggles. You can run barefoot on them, which improves form. Everything else sux.
its easier for me to do on a treadmill, but smh i run so fast on a treadmil but time is so bad compared to a real run.
I love getting hot and sweaty on the treadmill. That's the whole point. Chase the sweat and pain. Then eventually, the endorphins will come.
It drives me crazy
I think only snobby running purists are going to be the only ones that ignorantly say “you should never train on a treadmill, you will never reach your goals doing that”
If you have a good treadmill that can get to a decent incline, you can do the vast majority of your training on that And get great benefit
No a real runner doesn't complain about the weather anyone who does isn't a true runner
I'll take the risk. I can't do treadmill's
@@tdurden9532 Treadmills are just boring, I think is what he's saying.
How dare you
😂😂😂😂😂
Suck it up bro 😂😂
i would rather die
heavy snow? i thought the world is suffer global warming
No. Just say no to threadmills.
What an incredibly boring video! Who is it aimed at? Who needs to be told that running outside is more dangerous than running on a treadmill? If you want to make an interesting video about running on a treadmill, have a look at Zwift.
He only says those things cause he snowed in.
@@ramboray80 Sure, but there's no need to make a video about it. I saw the title of this video and expected some kind of sensible comparison. I don't need to waste 10 minutes watching a video to learn that it's safer and more convenient to run indoors.
Fiiirirt
I think we can all agree, that running is good for your overall health. Outside or inside👍🏿
