Most of the time, they paid a little to take advantage of that person, but it will always backfire. This is the story that homeowners don't tell when they put up a video like this. Most of the time, they are to blame

@@benjaminziegler7437 let me correct you there. it has nothing to do with not wanting to pay a professional that can get it done much faster than myself, its the fact I cant afford to pay you and buy all the material. In the current housing market and inflation, I can barely afford the materials needed let alone pay someone to do it. I will dish out for a pro to do the stuff I do not have the confidence to do myself and then I'll do everything else when they are done. I will also do my own demolition to save money because most people can't mess up ripping out the old crap. And I am slow and meticulous when I do it myself and was complemented by our cabinet supplier for the job I did installing our kitchen cabinets. As a journeyman painter, I've had to go behind clowns like this. I refuse to accept the work when it is claimed to be paint grade, because if I don't, legally I have to fix it. I don't make many friends, but I'm not there to make friends. Drugs are usually the reason for this crap. 37 yrs in the business, I say this with absolute confidence.

I realized 2 things about contractors. 1. I don't trust any of them. They all say they can do it. 2. I can't afford good quality work and for it to be done correctly.
So I learned all the trades on my own time from electrical, plumbing, hvac, carpentry, drywall, flooring, painting, finish carpentry, fabricating, welding.... You don't need to know everything but you do need to know the most important things and the basics. Most of the trades use the same concepts just applied in different ways. You gain more knowledge from watching videos like this than you do from those that show you "How To" do things.
Time to go tile my bathroom floor now that the contractors have stopped showing up and quit half way. I was quoted $4,700 to get a small 6'x7' bathroom to the point of installing fixtures, paint, trim, etc. They were to also get a mostly finished cape cod 2nd floor bedroom to the point that I could paint, trim and carpet.
Not a single flat, square, plumb wall in the bathroom despite being all new construction, I had to do all the "complicated" work and now left to do it all myself. First and last time hiring a contractor at age 39. I don't have the same time I used to and is the only reason I hired in the first place.
I paid them for "half" the work and they returned to do some crappy drywall work and bounced and never came back to collect the rest of their money (not that I would have paid anyway). I guess my small bathroom and small bedroom in my small house was too much to handle.
Learn to do these things yourself and you will be in a position to hire help because you want to and not because you have to.
You can also keep them honest when they start to say stupid shit like... "Hey this tub doesn't need a stringer. They don't use those anymore". Quote from my contractor... I said "They abso-fucking-lutely do!". Prints off manufacturer instructions and hands them to the "contractor".

Permits are a money grab and some inspectors are a joke. Never understood how someone could critique an experienced tradesman’s work by taking some test and never having any hands on experience. Word of mouth, taking the time to research a contractor and his reviews is the way to go, assuming you are willing to pay for an experienced skilled professional. I'm a electrician and I hate to say that I see crap like this almost daily. People want work done cheap and fast so they usually get untrained Spanish workers and many of them don't care about quality

This is CLOSE to the worst I have ever seen. The worst had NO supply plumbing to the tub/shower AT ALL.... no valve, no tub spout, no shower head and yet the backer-board was on and the drywall was finished on the back side! When I pointed it out to the Client (who had taken over for her Mother), She (and her husband) said "we hadn't noticed that". As bad (or possibly worse) was the drain to the toilet (not installed) was an upside down 3"x2" Ty. Literally the toilet would have been draining into 2" ABS. Plans called for the two story (already completed) addition to be done as slab on grade but it had actually been done on a 6" wide stem wall with about a 12"-14" crawl space. I never did find out the depth of the footings, if it even had them? Stair framing was totally out of code (step rise height varied over 1 1/4" between treads, etc.). I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

Love the lavatory faucet used as a tub filler, by the time the tub is full, its cold.

Yeah he bored the holes for a 4 inch spread instead of an 8 so the only fix was to have it off set to center to make the 8 work.... he is defiantly not the sharpest tool in the shed.

In this world you typically what you pay for. I’d like to know what the quote was for the work being performed. HGTV will you an entire bath can be remodeled for about 10,000.00 while in reality if you want it done well, want quality products, and in a timely manner a typical hall bath in Texas should cost about 27,000-34,000.00 depending on actual products selected but the workmanship should never be scimped on.
