Let's start from the beginning. The "maize" article was created in 2001, one of Wikipedia's first few thousand articles. Since then, there have been official requests to change it to corn in 2007, 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2022. None have been successful
The Corn vs. Maize war got so bad that in 2013, a Wikipedia admin had to "protect" the page due to persistent vandalism, meaning that only experienced editors could edit the Maize page
The main argument from the pro-corn crowd is that "maize" is simply less popular than "corn", and Wikipedia has a guideline about using common names.
