Hey! You were reccommended by a friend and just the first few minutes were so informative. My ASL has never been great but i wanted to improve for the deaf community that comes in at bestbuy. Knowing that tech signs are rapidly changing and not always accepted makes so much sense but i hadnt thought of it. Im excited to learn from you.
Indeed "tech" is one of the fastest evolving areas of signing. However, even knowing older tech signs can be useful because it provides a strong base from which to build and lets you recognize the signing of people who learned the older signs and haven't changed their signing style yet. Professional ASL interpreters end up with "huge" vocabularies in both ASL and English. ============================ How to use ASL University to learn sign language for free: 1. I just finished ASL 3 and this video is perfect for me. Thank you! I look forward to more advanced level videos. Your free content on RUclips is amazing!
This is awesome thank you. I have been learning ASL for about 10 years and your lessons are the only ones the really got me to understand the language fully and stray from signing PSE. You have so much information in all your lessons and I want you to know all your work is appreciated! 😊
"Zip" is a short word and is commonly fingerspelled when referring to things other than zippers. Drive will also be spelled if needed for a specific reference to a zip drive. However a signer might use a classifier to depict holding a zip drive and inserting a zip disk into it. Such depictive signing, to be successful, would need place in a high context situation between people familiar with zip drives. Not too many of us around anymore who even know what a "Zip Drive" is without looking it up online.
Great discussion/review off tech words, thanks! I would love to see examples of how you explain technological activities such as dragging items to the desktop, drag & drop, closing or switching between apps, upload/download, etc. Context of tech classes and making iMovies, etc.
Once again it's Dr. Bill to the rescue... thanks for all these signs!! It's not like they are complicated, I just don't use them in general conversation very often! :D
Hello. The sign for "website" is actually more than just holding up a "W" hand. "Website" uses a very specific movement. See: ruclips.net/video/Fmt_t1sjm9Q/видео.html However, you are correct in that a certain amount of context is needed to help distinguish the sign WEBSITE from the number "66."
My new favorite sign is "encryption". The demonstration of "safe" made me laugh. I also think that anyone seeing the reset-router signs would get it, even without knowing ASL!
I'd like to know where it's at too. (And I'm the creator.) Meh. Probably on a hard-drive somewhere in a cavernous warehouse with thousands of crates with stamped numbering on the sides.
Coolo. Maybe edit the intro text on this RUclips page to reference it so everyone can go there? (I don't mean to be a pain; I have no doubt your pedagogical/practical/economic decisions for keeping your resources separated are intricate.)
Most people sign with a dominant right hand..However, you can sign with a dominant left. Whatever is comfortable for you. Just pick one dominant hand and stick to it. =)

Very important vid Thanks Dr.Bill
Can the sign “fade out” also be used for “melt” (as in snow ❄️ or ice cream 🍨 melting)
The MELT sign can have a variety of meanings including but not limited to:
dissolve
fade
solve
cure
All of which very much "depends" on context.
@@sign-language thanks so much for this comment! I love that asl is very context based and signs can have multiple meanings
Every year technology keeps changing. What is an ASL sign for zip drive?
"Zip" is a short word and is commonly fingerspelled when referring to things other than zippers.

Such depictive signing, to be successful, would need place in a high context situation between people familiar with zip drives.

Is the sign for Walmart cheap?
With a "W" handshape.
Looks like it's the same sign for cheap, but your dominant hand makes a "W" shape instead.
Thanks! It appeared initialized to me as well. Appreciate the reply
Wow. Love the monitor. Better than using sub
Dr.V---- When we sign "website" is the context that acts as the determiner since it is only the right "W" hand?
Hello. The sign for "website" is actually more than just holding up a "W" hand. "Website" uses a very specific movement. See: ruclips.net/video/Fmt_t1sjm9Q/видео.html

Thanks, Dr. Bill---btw, I was helping a homeless woman last week, she is going deaf, I sent her to ur website! It's the best, after all!
Great

sprint is the same sign as escape. Clever
Couldn't find Technology Signs (1)...anyone seen it?
I'd like to know where it's at too.
(And I'm the creator.) Meh. Probably on a hard-drive somewhere in a cavernous warehouse with thousands of crates with stamped numbering on the sides.
So next time I see a guy with his face melting off I'll know what he's been watching...All the best possible and may you go from strength to strength.
