I have worked with the Deaf community first hand for the past couple years and am noticing the accents I've picked up on from them. Some signs I choose from environmental influence, others I pick just because it feels right-- I learned for 5 years before my job so it's a mix of classroom signing and real world conversation. Anyway, the sign for 'RUclips' that I see is the same as 'filming' but with a Y hand shape, palm faced outward instead of to the side like shown in this video. So fun to see how uniquely language evolves in ASL based on region, culture, and exposure to media. Thanks for the helpful video!
Thanks for commenting. The sign RUclips has evolved and continues to evolve. Does the version you are seeing look like this? See: ruclips.net/video/IudwA6TRdVI/видео.html Also, when referring to specific signs in one of the longer videos it helps to include a time code in 0:00 format. RUclips converts that format into links directly to that time in the video and I can more easily see that to which you are referring (without having to watch the whole video). Instead of stating "palm faced outward" it might be good to describe which hand (dominant or non-dominant) faces "forward" (if you mean forward). Outward can be a bit ambiguous since it can also mean "outward to the side" as in "out to the side." Anyway, the other day I saw a skilled signer just jab a the thumb of a dominant-hand "Y" twice into the palm of a non-dominant flat hand (facing toward the dominant side with fingertips pointing up). Or in other words one or more Deaf have evolved the RUclips sign beyond the circular movement to a slightly more specific touch-touch movement. Will be interesting to see how most people sign RUclips ten years from now.

Gloria, My day job school has indeed stopped holding in-person class meetings due to the pandemic. The videos you see me publishing "lately" are videos I've been rescuing from my old hard drives. Some of the videos didn't get published because there were technical issues. For example, my most recent upload had multiple issues or challenges with the original files. It was originally broken into three different files by my older camcorder due to 4GB size limit restrictions. The first couple of upload attempts failed likely due to the size of the files so I re-rendered the files and compressed them. Upon posting the first time the data was corrupted and the video would freeze a few minutes into the video and stay that way until about 20 minutes later. During another rendering of the three video files a different video froze during the rendering process. I ended up processing each of the three parts separately then posting the compressed videos to youtube to go through their (amazing) compression and rendering process and then downloaded each of the videos and stitched them together into one very processed and compressed video (still over a gigabyte in size) and uploaded that to RUclips. There were many, many steps involved with this such as downloading and installing specific codecs onto my computer, converting file formats (from an old MTS video format), restarting the computer multiple times, after installs and changes, using a different computer, ... I could list off about 30 other little issues, steps, and processes involved with "saving" this particular video. That is just how it is when working with video files that have some corruption. (I could list out all those little steps but doing so would take more time away from prepping the "next" video. Part of the issue has to do with the nature of the teaching situation. Not always but often I have to walk clear across campus while carrying my own monitor, laptop, tripod, cables, video camera, and other teaching gear. Then if some other teacher is in the classroom I get about 9 minutes to "set up" for a video shoot (and that's "IF" the preceding teacher actually finishes their class on time and dismisses class in a timely fashion. Then I have to set up while the previous class is leaving and my class is arriving. Gear gets banged up, hard drives get knocked around, SD cards get subjected to static, tripods tip over, yadda, yadda, etc. I try to get decent rooms to teach in, starting as early as 8 months in advance but often administrators and/or room schedulers pooh, pooh the issue, claim it isn't a priority, claim it is someone else's job, and/or don't go to bat for proper scheduling of ASL classes into classrooms that meet the needs of ASL instructors. I could go on and on about this with examples of ASL classes (not just mine -- most ASL instructors at universities can relate) being scheduled in rooms with too many chairs / desks, bad lighting, and the inability to sit in a semi-circle. My point though is that had I been teaching (at my day job) this semester I would not have had time to work on reclaiming older videos because when the pandemic hit -- every teacher who was teaching in-person classes just waved goodbye to their free time and saw it eaten up by having to invest gobs, and gobs of time switching over to online instruction. You are only seeing some of these videos "now" not because of anything to do with the pandemic (or social distancing) but because I had time (to find, fix, and post problematic previously recorded videos) due to having earned a sabbatical from my day job (by putting in 7 years of service and developing a meritorious sabbatical application) and then choosing to extended my sabbatical to two semesters by taking a 50% pay cut. Which is to say - I’m able to post many of these videos because I am literally giving up half a year's salary. It’s okay though. Here's an example of me using my voice for fun: Once in a while during my in-person classes a student will ask me, "Do you speak?" I sign to them (or type) that I can indeed speak and ask them if they would like to hear me speak. They of course excitedly sign "Yes!" At which point I make a show of it and sign "Ready?! Ready!? Listen carefully! ...." And then I let loose with a couple of "Arf! Arf!" barking sounds as if I were a dog speaking on command or to appease my "master. Disc is the preferred spelling in British English, and it's also the spelling used for devices carrying sound” Thus you can perhaps see why a Deaf American (such as me) would tend to spell "disk" instead of disc. I notice that other ASL instructors also tend to spell disk when labeling the sign that shows a D rotating on the non-dominant palm. You are absolutely right that the more common spelling for music discs tends to be disc.
To sign RUclips is finger spelling ok? Would signing it be something like signing "I search laptop, and then finger spelling the letters in RUclips or would it be "I laptop search" and then finger spelling RUclips?
There are a few different signs for RUclips. Some people just spell YT. Most either do a circled YT on the palm (as if representing an old fashioned camera being cranked). A good place to ask such questions is at the official Lifeprint-ASLU Facebook group. Matty, Thanks for the feedback. A few thoughts: 1. Not all videos are intended for all audiences. If this video is too fast for a person then the video is "not for them." Just as a beginning math student is not ready to fully benefit from an advanced calculus or advanced trigonometry class -- a beginning-level ASL student is not ready to fully benefit from an advanced ASL class. 2. It's okay to not understand everything you see in a video. In real life situations it is common to miss a bit here and there yet still enjoy the overall conversation. It is okay if students miss a bit or get a (little) confused by the opening casual chatting that is going on at the beginning of some videos. It is a form of exposure to signing that many students don't see often. (Yet need to see it so they can start getting used to it.) The real meat of the video is the vocabulary which is supported by the slides and typed notes. When people go to a huge buffet restaurant they typically don't take "everything" on their plate. They "miss" a few items -- it doesn't matter though because they still go home full. 3. Just because a person is (relatively) fluent in ASL doesn't mean that person is "done" learning or improving their ability to understand even faster ASL. It is possible for a "fluent" signer to become even "more" fluent in ASL -- but to do so requires stretching and growing by watching "fast signing." 4. In the "show more" information in the video description I point out that this video has a prerequisite: "Intended audience: Individuals who have completed Lessons 1 through 60 for the "ASL University" curriculum (Lifeprint dot com) and/or people near the beginning of a fifth semester ASL class. Prerequisites: ASL 4 or equivalent" Please understand that I do value and appreciate your feedback. I'm just very comfortable with the idea that students don't need to catch everything the first time around in order to benefit from watching a video. If a student watches the video and catches a reasonable percentage of it -- I'm totally okay with that. If they can't catch a reasonable percentage of it they should watch a different video -- more their speed. Tip: If you watch the video on a desktop computer browser the RUclips interface lets you click on the gear icon and adjust the speed settings of the video.

I know it doesn't matter to most people, but I love when there's sound. It makes me feel like I'm in the class, rather than just watching on YT.

Then if some other teacher is in the classroom I get about 9 minutes to "set up" for a video shoot (and that's "IF" the preceding teacher actually finishes their class on time and dismisses class in a timely fashion. Then I have to set up while the previous class is leaving and my class is arriving. Gear gets banged up, hard drives get knocked around, SD cards get subjected to static, tripods tip over, yadda, yadda, etc. I try to get decent rooms to teach in, starting as early as 8 months in advance but often administrators and/or room schedulers pooh, pooh the issue, claim it isn't a priority, claim it is someone else's job, and/or don't go to bat for proper scheduling of ASL classes into classrooms that meet the needs of ASL instructors.
I could go on and on about this with examples of ASL classes (not just mine -- most ASL instructors at universities can relate) being scheduled in rooms with too many chairs / desks, bad lighting, and the inability to sit in a semi-circle. My point though is that had I been teaching (at my day job) this semester I would not have had time to work on reclaiming older videos because when the pandemic hit -- every teacher who was teaching in-person classes just waved goodbye to their free time and saw it eaten up by having to invest gobs, and gobs of time switching over to online instruction.
You are only seeing some of these videos "now" not because of anything to do with the pandemic (or social distancing) but because I had time (to find, fix, and post problematic previously recorded videos) due to having earned a sabbatical from my day job (by putting in 7 years of service and developing a meritorious sabbatical application) and then choosing to extended my sabbatical to two semesters by taking a 50% pay cut. Which is to say - I’m able to post many of these videos because I am literally giving up half a year's salary.
It’s okay though. If given the choice to go back in time, I would still choose to do it all over again because in addition to posting “these” videos I’ve also been able to work with some really wonderful interns and associates and post over 10,000 video clips to the ASLU “Sign Bank” at: ruclips.net/channel/UCZy9xs6Tn9vWqN_5l0EEIZAvideos

I have a random question:) Do you ever speak with your voice or do you solely sign? Like at home, do you ever use your voice for fun?
Here's an example of me using my voice for fun:
Once in a while during my in-person classes a student will ask me, "Do you speak?"
I sign to them (or type) that I can indeed speak and ask them if they would like to hear me speak.
They of course excitedly sign "Yes!"
At which point I make a show of it and sign "Ready?! Ready!? Listen carefully! ...."
And then I let loose with a couple of "Arf! Arf!" barking sounds as if I were a dog speaking on command or to appease my "master. "

There we read this comment:
“Most of what you need to remember about disk and disc is the following: disk is the preferred spelling in American English, and it's also the spelling used for computer-related objects, such as a hard disk. Disc is the preferred spelling in British English, and it's also the spelling used for devices carrying sound”
Thus you can perhaps see why a Deaf American (such as me) would tend to spell "disk" instead of disc. I notice that other ASL instructors also tend to spell disk when labeling the sign that shows a D rotating on the non-dominant palm.
You are absolutely right that the more common spelling for music discs tends to be disc.

Not necessarily. I know sign language, not fluently, however, and I don't like it when I feel like a person has had their eyes on me too long.
To sign RUclips is finger spelling ok? Would signing it be something like signing "I search laptop, and then finger spelling the letters in RUclips or would it be "I laptop search" and then finger spelling RUclips?
There are a few different signs for RUclips. Some people just spell YT. Most either do a circled YT on the palm (as if representing an old fashioned camera being cranked).

A few thoughts:
1. Not all videos are intended for all audiences. If this video is too fast for a person then the video is "not for them." Just as a beginning math student is not ready to fully benefit from an advanced calculus or advanced trigonometry class -- a beginning-level ASL student is not ready to fully benefit from an advanced ASL class.
2. It's okay to not understand everything you see in a video. In real life situations it is common to miss a bit here and there yet still enjoy the overall conversation. It is okay if students miss a bit or get a (little) confused by the opening casual chatting that is going on at the beginning of some videos. It is a form of exposure to signing that many students don't see often. (Yet need to see it so they can start getting used to it.) The real meat of the video is the vocabulary which is supported by the slides and typed notes. When people go to a huge buffet restaurant they typically don't take "everything" on their plate. They "miss" a few items -- it doesn't matter though because they still go home full.
3. Just because a person is (relatively) fluent in ASL doesn't mean that person is "done" learning or improving their ability to understand even faster ASL. It is possible for a "fluent" signer to become even "more" fluent in ASL -- but to do so requires stretching and growing by watching "fast signing."
4. In the "show more" information in the video description I point out that this video has a prerequisite:
"Intended audience: Individuals who have completed Lessons 1 through 60 for the "ASL University" curriculum (Lifeprint dot com) and/or people near the beginning of a fifth semester ASL class.
Prerequisites: ASL 4 or equivalent"
Please understand that I do value and appreciate your feedback.
I'm just very comfortable with the idea that students don't need to catch everything the first time around in order to benefit from watching a video. If a student watches the video and catches a reasonable percentage of it -- I'm totally okay with that. If they can't catch a reasonable percentage of it they should watch a different video -- more their speed.
Tip: If you watch the video on a desktop computer browser the RUclips interface lets you click on the gear icon and adjust the speed settings of the video.
