(i just wrote and deleted a superlong coment about how i first got introduced with enneagram and how it seemed to finaly answer all of my questions, but as time went by i understood that there was something more that just this "iconoclastic-detached-melancholic-egoistic visionary", i felt more caring and obligated to people in my introversion and detachment, i tried to explain that with enneagram arrow movement (5 in growth goes to 8 and becomes decisive, and 8 goes to 2 and becomes more open-hearted, 2 goes to 4's emotional self-awareness etc), but then i investigated some more, found mbti and finally everything started to make sense in a bigger picture.
But the main thing i was going to say wasn't bout myself - i actually wanted to thank you for these videos and your insightful homepage. keep up the good work, you genius piece of brain and good heart!)

If you wish to over simplify it then the enneagram is far more about Motive, psychological drive and aspiration then it is about emotion.

I am a 2/9/4 (sx/sp/so stacking) ENFP, I just retook the test again to make sure. They are all really equal, but 2 is the strongest. I really feel like it would be common for ENFP to be a 2/9 as one of our key characteristics is avoiding conflict and helping others

Erik you are one of my favorite voices on the internet! I love your expression, passion, knowledge, and exploration of type.. It's hard living in America and not having an in-person community to talk to or hear other people's ideas about typologies. At the only MBTI meetup group in Dallas, USA where I live, most people there only understand typology in a very basic sense. So I enjoy your videos and am reminded there ARE others out there in this world who share this fascination to explore typology in great depth and are as passionate as I am. And it feels less lonely. :) I've watched many of your videos and this is one of my favorites. I was always wondering your enneagram tritype, it's nice to finally hear yours. I am ENFj-Ni 4double wing - 1w2 - 5w4 sx/so.

I believe I am an INTP 9w1 SP/SX, but I do have a stronger sense that I use and process with Si+Fe quite regularly. Usually I will feel like I am jumping back and forth between ISFJ (Si-Fe-Ti-Ne) and INTP (Ti-Ne-Si-Fe). I can be very technically minded where I go into a mode of problem solving, understanding using theory and so on (I am an Electrical Engineering major with a minor in Physics). In this mindset, I find it harder to connect with people on an emotional level. But, a lot of the time when I am more in a relaxed state, I find that I connect very easily with people and I have a more peace-of-mind/tranquil vibe to me, and I am not so ready to solve technical problems in this state of mind. I do express SX more than SO and I am definitely leading with SP. I also strongly see the 9 wing 1 in myself over any other enneatype too.

Hugely insightful! I used to wake up every day and immediately feel this crushing weight of a whole day squeezed into a moment. When I consider the state of my job and marriage at the time it makes sense though, and I generally don't feel that way any more. I do often feel afraid to overextend and run out of energy. My initial results are 9w1, and it fit well.

Erik, this video was one of the best videos for an attempt a cohesive bond between MBTI and the Enneagram. Can you do [a series of] videos on the Enneagram numbers, individually, plus each MBTI type, or at least each of the eight cognitive functions? I know that's a LOT to ask, but it will keep you busy for a while, and it should help you solidify your capabilities on this Meta-Analysis and its process. Either way, you are my Mentor on these matters. THANK YOU ^_^

This is the first time the enneagram has actually made sense in the big picture. Everyone wants to give definitions and traits for numbers. To me, that’s like memorizing a bunch of dates for a history test. Nothing has context and it all becomes a big blur and actually counterproductive.
After years of ambivalence and landing on I think 6w5 (INTP) I can actually understand this thing from this angle. Are there any other videos or books that expand on this framework?

This is the third time I'm trying to make this comment; for some reason they vanish at some point before I actually submit them. Probably an errant keystroke as I type on my sticky, old keyboard.
I will not even try to recreate my longish efforts. Bottom line; this video addresses stuff I'm now thinking about in my exploration of personality. I do appreciate your efforts and insight. I often need to ponder them to be able to use them pragmatically (INTP , supposedly a 5w4, here.) Anyway, thanks. I have even begun to support your work using Patreon. BTW; have you considered charging a small fee for a one time use of your test?

as per enneagram, again i feel confused n relate with many aspects of several of the numbers n perhaps not in full with any singular number? i m unsure how people come to which they r... is anyone really ever just one way? aren't we all a bit of a blend at various times, depending, n various aspects come out n/or draw back... n things shift n change? sure some ppl seem more the same than others so... n maybe some ppl have certain more so predominant aspects than others even tho they might have a blend... i just heard u say u identify with several of the enneagram types... but is there moe of a method of figuring out which u might b, rather than just what generally identify with most yerself in no particular method of assessment? thx.

I've taken the enneagram numerous of times. I'm an ENFP and can relate to both 7w6 and 9w8 (which I've gotten about 4 times each at this stage). I fear conflict, love adventure, have a long fuse, very easy going, go with the flow and love variety and new experiences. I'm a huge procrastinator as well. Still trying to figure it out :-)

    • @tiggerjimbo1275

I had the same problem, you may have both in the tri-type like me. I went for 7w6 because I experience anxiety of various kinds like missing out or other worse stuff, I don't seek inner peace like a 9, although I can be withdrawn at times, I get bored quickly with small talk, do 9s LOVE small talk, that is the question? I actually am trying to learn how to be more present in the moment rather than living in fantasy mode. Having 9 in the tri-type does help me with getting away from anxiety. 7s will push peoples boundaries too far if unhealthy / young, I knew how to be annoying! Yeah procrastination was a huge problem for me, still is a little. Another thing is criticism, for 7s its like acid rain to be criticised! Not sure how that feels if your a 9.

    I identify with 1, 4, 5, 6 & 9, not so much with any of the rest.
Type & tritype can be difficult to nail down as, similarly with being able to use all 8 functions, we can fall into all 9 enneagram experiences at different times, while I know there will be heavier tendencies on certain ones. Maybe the tritype should have wings, ha. I'd be 1w9/4/5w6.

Thank you for having this link available. I really enjoyed studying the data...and I'd been wondering for a few years now if & what correlations there are/can be between the emotional functions of the Enneagram system with the mental cognitive MBTI functions. My 'Gut' instincts (Well, mostly my internally logical, but not expert/professional understanding I'd gained from these two systems, actually) told me there HAS to be at least a few likely preferential ties between the two.
I found it particularly interesting that both Ti & Ni doms yielded the most common result of E5...& that none of the MBTI types really gravitated toward E1 or E9 much.
I've recently come to the conclusion that I, myself, am most likely an INTP-A, 5w6 sp/sx, "The Contemplative" Archetype: Tritype 594.

  • @russellclement6633

I've consistently tested as INTP ([A]ssertive variant on "16Personalities" version) & enneagram 5 (w6, I think?), sp/sx instincts (& scoring so naturally high on self-preserving that the other two instincts apparently barely even seem to 'exist' in me)...listing Type 9 as a strong alternate possibility if 5's description didn't resonate with me.
I tended to score rather low on all the 'Heart' (or 'shame' driven) types, but 4 was my highest of all those 'individual' low scores. (Pun intended :-)
So, if 5 is consistently my highest result, w/ 9 consistently being a close 2nd (and highest 'Gut'/physical result)--even though I'd never officially tested for my Tritype--I'd say it'd logically follow that mine is/would be: "The Contemplative" 594 sp/sx Archetype. (Or, a 'triple withdrawing' type with an apparently abnormally high 'withdrawing fear instinct' to boot. (Yeesh - I wonder if it's implying I need to "put myself out there" more.))

I still probably don't know enough about these things... but the numbers I can identify with, greatly depend on what mood or phase I am in... I can definitely say, when I turned about 19/20 yrs old, I was an 8... no questions asked...
had I not had a kid I still would be bc I don't need to be a mom from prison... also was traumatized badly. I can identify with almost all of them because I am in an identity crisis... I think what I am trying to achieve is bettering myself.... 50/50 on every function. But the more dominant functions & inferior/dormant functions keep changing order or something if that makes sense... please reply to this, I could really use insight. I know this may not be enough info to make any sense out of. But like you said in another one of your vids, the only purpose I knew I could master, felt passion for, has faded... same with morals amd values... it seems they had also faded. I was a strong believer in complete honesty, until it started doing me more harm than good. Except one. Being true to yourself, whoever that is anymore.

1% descends upon me as the relative frequency of INFJ... yet the respondents here so far tally to 57%... hmm. Skirting around interpretations that assume reported types are accurate... an interesting possibility is that those interested in phycology and MBTI have a bias taking the test.

I identify the most with 9 and 4w5. Any suggestions on how to survive life (and grow and become a better person) as Enneagram 4w5 or 9? The only guidance in those Enneagrams' descriptions I can think of, is to look out for signs of my Enneagram's unhealthiness and get rid of them as fast as possible. Can I be both Enneagram 4w5 and 9 or do I need to look further into this (like I had to do with my INFP/INFJ dilemma ;) )

Each enneagram point has an integration point and a relaxation point. For 4 the relaxation point is 2, where it's easy to play wingman for others. The integration point for 4 is 1, where personal growth is heightened by the perfecting of self, influencing others or reforming anew something vital in society.

Hi Erik, I have tested 3 times and my type is INFJ with 1w9 sx/sx enneagram & 1-4-5 [Researcher] tritype. Thus, I find it is interesting when you stated that types 1, 8 and 9 are more or less like "sensing" ... does it mean that INFJs with 1/8/9 enneagram types are exercising their inferior 'Se' function more often than usual? Is it unhealthy? Or, is it only indicating mature development and balance? You also described that enneagram 'xs' instinct variant is extrovert, which is interesting since INFJs are introverts. But once I read somewhere that is common for INFJs to be misunderstood as extroverts; so perhaps my test result still makes sense. Thank you for your videos, they are fun and educative!

    • @ErikThor
      @ErikThor  7 лет назад +1

I don't think it indicates much, since it's about emotions, it just tells you what you are reading into your current life situation and your environment. The emotions exist almost no matter what we do, even if we try to focus on other things, we can experience our emotions trying to tug us in a different direction. And 1 and 5 are among the most common types for INFJs.

    • @cikelm
      @cikelm 7 лет назад

Thanks Erik for the explanation :) so enneagram is about 'emotion' ... while for me emotion is not permanent then I see tritype more as 'mood' then. Btw, 145 is not my first result ... I had 137 (the system builder) first but thought it was a mistake for the sequence 1-9-3-7-etc (according to percentage) ... with their instinctual stack sx- sx-sp-so-etc ... but now I get it, 9 is not part of the tritype but is the wing!

i m not sure... but i m guessing i m an infp or an isfp? i wrote a lengthy comment on my feelings n thoughts on this on another video... going to copy n paste it here... hoping for more clarity... trying to learn...

    • @beijaflor1908

is there sch a things as an infp or an isfp? // i have no clue what i m... in that this is new info to me... stumbled on it strangely by recommended videos in my feed on infjs... ?! does my computer or the internet think i m n infj?! lol idk... i m both introverted and extroverted... i can be painfully shy, removed, distant, withdrawn, dis-connective, etc... or i can b the opposite... very charming, eloquent, confident, at ease, connective, etc... i can talk too little or too much... i can prefer to write over talking, n/or i can prefer talking over writing when it comes to communicating, depending... some things r better spoken some r better written... n then there is what mood i m in, how i m feeling n how clear my thinking is, how much or little energy i have, etc... factors into my choice of communication style at any given moment... i m an artist, n i am a performance artist... so that seems extroverted... tho i also m extremely introverted much of the time... i do find to be extroverted, it requires much too much of my energy... it takes a lot out of me... n i must recharge being an introvert... i have a hard time with using my phone for voice calls... preferring text messages... majority of the time... tho sometimes i do like phone calls, very much... but again, they r hard for me; require a lot of energy for me... n i def do not like to leave voice mail... i haven't always been the same all the time in all ways... some things i have been better or worse at at varying times depending... after traumas, i tend to get worse at a lot of things... yet then i will end up like a super hero in certain awesome ways... ?! esp how the adrenaline effects me n how i can channel it... (to make the best out of a shit situation...) i m a very intuitive woman, n have always been very intuitive as a child as well... n i m also a hyper sensitive type, so idk?! i m probably more so feeling than thinking, or i think through my feelings if that makes any sense? tho i do prefer when i can be more practical, n i need to have thought through sensible n practical, workable plans... n i can't stand poor planning... however i m very flexible n adaptable... n i do not like it when others r too rigid n not flexible nor adaptable when it is necessary to be flexible n adaptable... i don't c the point to that kind of rigidity, n it seems frictional n problematic... like a block or clog in the flow... i m very thoughtful n i value thinking things through n being thorough... i tend to over think i have also been told this about myself... n that i can disconnect from my feelings through over thinking n being very analytical... i tend towards being super analytical, n very thoughtful n considerate or like everything overall... lol... i tend to think of everything, or nearly that, or at least i try to... tho i m capable of missing things n being wrong as well... but i m too often right, on point, n mark making, even when i wish i was wrong. much of my thinking n feeling is intuition and sense based... so?!!? sometimes i get so caught up in feelings, but in inarticulate ways... n then i have to take personal inventory n feel my my feelings n connect with my feelings n articulate my feelings, which then informs my thinking n choices... making decisions can be too challenging for me... n can be quite a process... of thinking and feeling mixed together... it can be arduos n take me much too long... mulling things over in indecision n going back n forth until finally i get clear (hopefully... lol) or i m the opposite... very impulsive n compulsive n make very immediate decisions... if based on intuition n sense based, then i tend to make at least some amount of important, effective choices that way... tho usually there r great things n also some amount of not great things which come out of my impulsive compulsive immediate decisions... which imo have a certain power in them for the immediacy n confidence in which they r made... in particular... even if certain aspects end up turning out less than ideal... there r usually powerful reasons why i needed to make such decisions n for those reasons i m always proud of myself for following my gut... despite whatever aspects end up being not as i wish... i wish i could have everything work out well, n tco all aspects n have a supremely ideal outcome for my choices... maybe i have not found that level of sweet balance yet... i hope i m able to attain such powerful wholly ideal manifestations. usually what has been less than ideal is how things have been for myself... even tho i have accomplished some amount of great good for the greater good of the whole... (which yes in a picture of infinity, can seem like a drop in an ocean, if even... but still, nonetheless, profoundly significant micro-macro positive impact... to toot my own horn a lil bit, wth. ;) ) not sure if i covered everything i meant to... but as far as the last letters of how we relate with the world in either perceptiveness or judgmentally... i m pretty confident i m a P in that department... i tend towards being very perceptive... that might be the main category i feel quite confidently clear on... the first 3 i feel i m a mix, n i do not feel clear on this stuff... it seems confusing, n i m not sure if it makes sense to me, or if i even get it... ?! hmm... i mean like i m prolly more so an introvert than an extrovert, naturally... ? maybe? tho i m both... so maybe that one i could go with introvert on... ? as far as #2 goes, i m very intuitive through my sense; senses; sensing... etc... i sense things... i intuit things... so...??? how does one pick between those things which for me are like one and the same n go hand in hand?! i couldn't tell u if i m one more than the other... nor do i get the point? same goes for thinking and feeling; #3... i do both. if i have to pick one more than the other, maybe i would pick feeling?! tho i know i m def a mix of both... n i m not confident i would b accurate by picking feeling over thinking... so...?! i m confused. i feel like i don't get this stuff. it seems mainly 2 n 3 r most confusing for me... but 1 is kinda as well... i seem to be a mish mosh of both things for the first 3... but as per 4, i m pretty confident i m more perceptive than judgmental towards the world... ? all that being said, if i was forced to pick (n not at all feeling certain about it; betting on inaccuracy, n still not really getting the point...) i guess i would pick: INFP? either that or: ISFP? tho i could b entirely incorrect on how to self assess in this methodology...? what is an infp / isfp i wonder? hearing infjs communicate tho, i tend to relate with them too... ? so idk... i find this stuff very confusing... it seems that many people feel it is helpful information to them tho, which i m glad about. :)

Sensing and intuition are Irrational so you can't say Jung was interested in rational only. He discovered that there four functions of consciousness plus two orientation extro and introverted. These are entirely unrelated to the 9 parted enneagram is the map of character not emotion. Study more!

The enneagram IS a map of emotion:
      From the enneagraminstitute.com
The CentersThe Enneagram is a 3 x 3 arrangement of nine personality types in three Centers. There are three types in the Instinctive Center, three in the Feeling Center, and three in the Thinking Center, as shown below. Each Center consists of three personality types that have in common the assets and liabilities of that Center. For example, personality type Four has unique strengths and liabilities involving its feelings, which is why it is in the Feeling Center. Likewise, the Eight’s assets and liabilities involve its relationship to its instinctual drives, which is why it is in the Instinctive Center, and so forth for all nine personality types.
      The Centers of the Enneagram
The inclusion of each type in its Center is not arbitrary. Each type results from a particular relationship with a cluster of issues that characterize that Center. Most simply, these issues revolve around a powerful, largely unconscious emotional response to the loss of contact with the core of the self. In the Instinctive Center, the emotion is Anger or Rage. In the Feeling Center, the emotion is Shame, and in the Thinking Center, it is Fear. Of course, all nine types contain all three of these emotions, but in each Center, the personalities of the types are particularly affected by that Center’s emotional theme.
The Dominant Emotion of each Center
Thus, each type has a particular way of coping with the dominant emotion of its Center. We can briefly see what this means by examining each type, Center by Center. In the Instinctive Center, Eights act out their anger and instinctual energies. In other words, when Eights feel anger building in them, they immediately respond to it in some physical way, raising their voices, moving more forcefully. Others can clearly see that Eights are angry because they give themselves permission to express their anger physically.

And I used rational vs emotional as a context here. I agree he studied "irrational" parts (sensing and intuition) but he studied them as mental processes not as emotional processes and he never used them to map out emotions or emotional responses in a person. He just meant that they were "irrational" in the sense that they were not about obtaining an objective or making a decision, but purely about acquiring information. (Perception)

I'm and ENTP 5w4 (as I commented above). Did you find that your enneagram type made it hard for you to nail down your mbti or vice versa? Although, in theory, it seems that ENTP and 5 isn't really a far fetched combination, it seems that most ENTPs aren't 5s, but 7s, 8s, or 3s....
