This is what Jungle should have become, it just wasn't the same music 1998 and after ( though the early-mid 2000's were some pretty kickass Drum and Bass tunes)
...and then one of my faves Aphrodite appeared shortly after LTJ Bukem hung up the headphones, giving way to darker styles with Dom & Roland, popular styles with Pendulum, the technical dive into Calyx and Teebee, star producer Sub Zero and countless other masters of the genre. It’s a DNB journey I’ve been on for 18 years and I still love it! I still covet the Mickey Finn mixes back in the early days, with Slipmatt’s SMD platters. Oh if I could go back in time I would jump at it!!
@@kiickinballistics I miss being right by the speakers, bass and amen breaks blaring dancing, popping, and burning sum dank lol.. I will always love jungle and dnb.. gotta fix my decks, get some needles, and dust off my vinyl.
The technique and natural rhythm is another level, always appreciate the talent involved in your style, even more so after I tried it myself, it’s a bit like watching snooker on the tele and when you go to the club for the first time and expect to bang in a solid ton......NA 😬lol Respect mate 👌
Thanks!! Was trying to differentiate a bit from the all-Jungle pieces I usually do. Will be experimenting further with some Garage / 2-Step on future videos.
Your an inspiration! Ordered my mpc because of you, time to get away from my DAW for a lil peice and start smackin up them pads. I would be in awe if i saw you do this live.. Are you performing anywhere?
Thanks for the comment! I have several dates left on the 2017 "Winter Tour", including March 4th (New Orleans, LA USA), April 15th (Dublin, Ireland), May 6th (Minneapolis, MN USA), and some other early seasonal shows. I typically play about 20 or so cities per year, and keep a running schedule on my FB page, which is facebook.com/spinscott. Thanks again, and hope to catch ya out at an event. Cheers!
Thanks! That would certainly be one way to do it, especially if planning to create a full track and then perform it live. For most of these projects here, I do it the opposite way. The program is started in the sampler and evolves as a live performance, but then if it turns out like something that would make a good track, I'll program it in the tracker program so that it can be released as a "dj friendly" version. Also, as you suggest above, it does indeed make sense sometimes to re-sample from another project in order to capture certain elements or characteristics not available in the box.
Hey! I'm thinking of purchasing SP-16 for performing finger drumming. I'm concerned about switching banks on the fly, though. It's very easy on my Maschine under the left hand, but seems a bit awkward on SP-16. Was it an issue for you?
Hi Simon! Thanks for the comment, and for your question here. Switching banks (or Scenes as Pioneer calls them on the SP-16) is currently a multi button function, so it did take a bit of practice to get the timing right, but it is definitely doable. I do like that there are 16 different numbered scene buttons. For those who choose to use the sync function, the scene will change on beat, so there is more flexibility in that use case. Pioneer seems to be very keen on evaluating feedback and feature suggestions from it's users, and has already done multiple firmware & feature updates for the SP-16. I've made the suggestion for some kind of single button "live drumming" mode, but not sure if/when that would be added. Overall, I've been able to make do with the current function... especially because filter and sound quality on this thing more than make up for it. Best of luck on your purchase decision, and enjoy!
Thank you for a reply and a wonderful performance to begin with :) I study your technique big time and you are a great inspiration for me. Going back to SP-16, I've just checked the documentation for the unit and even though it's not in the official manual itself, the firmware update docs contain CC values for midi in (I believe they were introduced after the launch, so it's there). Changing banks (scenes) is CC#0 with values 1-16 (everything greater than 16 is considered to be 16). In other words, it seems like you can get a foot controller that supports CC signals and route it to switch scenes with your feet.
Hey spin, just wondering, do you make the tracks in a daw then have a go at playing them, or do you just load in your samples and just play around with them?
Thanks for asking! These programs usually start by just messing around with sampling & editing sounds in the hardware, and placing them in various arrays on the pads. Typically they evolve into multiple sections, and I try to record a video the same day so that it maintains a freestyle / improvised sort of vibe. While I haven't used a DAW for these drum machine projects, I do use Madtracker for most of my commercially released tracks.
Thanks for asking! :) I don't have a BPM set, as this performance is all one-shot samples triggered realtime, similar to how one would play hand drums. There is also no quantize function used. Not sure if that would be possible because to quantize realtime would need to be predictive for late notes. Cheers!
Thanks!! I am really enjoying the TORAIZ so far. The sound quality is optimized for both live and production, and I've mostly used it for playing the real-time numbers in the live setting. VERY intuitive and easy to learn... in fact I am usually a product manual geek, but hardly had to consult the manual for this as it was quick to figure out.
That is correct, it does truncate the sounds when switching between "scenes", which breaks up the flow a bit. I have requested a firmware update for this, so we'll see what happens in the future.
Thanks for asking! It's a multi-step process to build these programs, but basically it is created by assigning all one-shot / one-note samples to the various pads, and turning off any beat correction, quantize, and sequence features so that it can be played real-time. The filter is set to the stereo output, and I use the stereo output to record the audio.
You are my favorite thing on the internet right now
Dearest you always gettin the best out of these . Im an old (old ? ) jnglst ..... still using breakbeats around 4~4 "kinda juke""))))))))))) bye
This is what Jungle should have become, it just wasn't the same music 1998 and after ( though the early-mid 2000's were some pretty kickass Drum and Bass tunes)
The good vibe is like the heart in shakedown st-----you just gotta poke around...

massive
Always appreciate your comments! Thanks for watching!
Not quantised to 1/16?
Good stuff mate ... would it make sense to program and process beats in a DAW and then resample/chop them in the AKAI ?
Thanks! That would certainly be one way to do it, especially if planning to create a full track and then perform it live. For most of these projects here, I do it the opposite way. oh okay cool, such a cool idea, no one else does jungle/ drum and bass with finger drumming
If it wasn't for the coffee,I might think this ones an AI!we should check to see if that's a cup of wd40 XD
Great job dude! Quick question: is the bpm master set? And your finger tapping is being quantized to that specific playback bpm?
Thanks for asking! :) I don't have a BPM set, as this performance is all one-shot samples triggered realtime, similar to how one would play hand drums. There is also no quantize function used. spinscott dude really impressively such great timing! Awesome work
Dope work! How do you feel about the toraiz as a live and/or production unit?

spinscott Sweet. thanks for the reply :)
spinscott seems like the sound cuts out from the last note when you change to a new patter or sequence?
That is correct, it does truncate the sounds when switching between "scenes", which breaks up the flow a bit. I have requested a firmware update for this, so we'll see what happens in the future.
holy moly dude
Thanks for commenting!!
hypercool
Thanks!

Thanks!!
How do you set it up to play like that
