- For those who have this radio, the Yeasu FTM-400 is a great radio, you DO have the capabilities to Crossband repeat. And thanks to Wesley with Yeasu for getting me the info on how to do this, t is not covered in the manual, but this video will show you how. Have fun, this is a great way to use both your HT and your base radio to get out.
When used properly Cross Band Repeat (CBR) can be incredibly useful. I work in an office on the midnight shift where I work completely alone and the office is situated three stories underground. Because of this I can't hit my local repeaters directly using just my portable H/T but using the CBR feature in my car (low power) allows me to easily hit my local repeaters. For several years now I've used this method to converse with hams all night long. CBR is a fantastic feature!
A great way to use this feature, quite the way to be creative!
Just did some cross band repeat on my FTM-400 working radio control point at a rally race this weekend. All thanks to the handy instructions in this video. Thanks from Canada and 73's!
I am glad it worked for you! Thanks for the comment. I still wish they would have put the instructions in the manual! You are welcome from the USA and 73's back at ya!
Outstanding...BEST video I have seen....I was on the fence to buying the radio...and tonight I will go for it!
Thanks, Captain Glenn
You are welcome! Thanks for the kind words and enjoy the radio. It does a lot o stuff!
Thanks for taking the time to do this video. I'm looking at getting this radio and have been reading / watching every thing I can for it.
Rudy Ackerman You are welcome..it's a great radio, have fun if you gt it!
I enjoyed the education. A lot of used older radios will cross band repeat too. Like my yaesu 8100. I haven't done it yet. But I think I'd like the FTM-400 left open to use as my main universal radio. But this gave me the idea to set up my 8100 to do this. This would really work well mobile too. A second radio set up in the truck, so if you are in the mall or campground. If you hook up a trickle charger at the campground you wouldn't have to worry about your car battery dying, that is if you have a electric site.
*onemarktwoyou* In the late 90's I owned two Yaesu FT-8100R radios - one in my car and the other as my base station. I always used the same model radio for both installations since they both operated the same and were programmed the same way using the same software. I LOVED the FT-8100 but I originally owned the prior model, the FT-8000. The 8000 was identical to the 8100 except the display did not separate from the chassis. Sadly, the FT-8000 had a design issue involving both volume controllers. Seems the potentiometers, through normal everyday use, would loosen over time and typically after a couple years of pushing the knob in to select that particular band or 'side', the ever-loosening volume controller would eventually "give way" and would push through into the frame of the display literally ripping the audio & squelch circuit traces off the main circuit board in which it was soldered to. Being an electronics tech, I was able to repair my own 8000 but it was an extremely tedious repair. Most, if not all FT-8000's, were beyond their warranty and the owner had to bear the full cost of repair. Sadly, many FT-8000R owners chose to sell their beloved radios as 'parts only' or 'tech special' radios :>\
400DR is great radio, keep posting interesting stuff about this radio! Since you are already posted few very interesting posts, keep in that way! Best regards!
Thanks for all the comments!
No doubt about it, the thing works just as you have instructed! Including through the repeater. Now if I can just get my head wrapped around all the other things that the manual does not tell you. Like how to kill a tone once you don't want it anymore! Lol
Great video. Easy to understand and well explained. Nice rig. 73, KG1USA
Thanks for the comment! 73's back at ya! KK6DEC
Thank you for this information. I just got this rig yesterday 73s KG5JYP
Way to go little guy I'm so proud of you!
THANKS, I've been searching to try to find out how to do this
You are welcome! It took me a while to get the info direct from Yaesu. Thanks for the comment!
lovely video, very clear and informative, thanks and well done.
Thanks for the comment, thank you!
Thanks for the video and nice job on the custom box!
Thanks for the comment!
Great video! Thanks for taking the time.
Great! Going to the rig right now to experiment!
looking forward to trying that out
Dang! Had I'd seen this video a few months ago I would have bought the FTM-400. I was hearing that even though it was advertised as x-band rpt, it wasn't capable. I guess It'll be a future purchase!
Thanks for the comment. It's a great radio once you get the hang of it!.
Nice video I'm planning on getting one thanks for the info 73's KD9BHE
Thanks for the comment. If you do get one, please take time to read and understand the manual, it will really help with programming the radio correctly. Good luck and 73's from Northern California!
Great video, Thanks for sharing!
You are welcome!
Thank you for the information !
You are welcome!
Nice informational video.

Thanks for the comment Joe! Appreciate the time you took to watch the video!
Cool box!
Nice video thank's for the information Kp4vet 73's
Thank You! 73's back at ya!
A reloader! Good man!
I didn't see anything that configures legal ID on the output of the xband. FCC regs say that the ID needs to be sent from the transmission point, not from the operation point. My Kenwood D710G has this config, but not, apparently, my FTM-400XDR.
Great video and radio! 73 de N1AD
Great video! Thanks!
+Thomas Mullenix You are welcome! Thanks for the comment!
Good video, some questions: can you talk from the ftm 400xdr to any brand radio in analog mode?( no repeater)
What can I do to communicate between the yaesu and another dmr radio in simplex? , as far as I know i can trough a repeater ( analog or digital) using a hotspot. Am I right? Cheers i like this model but the colleagues in the club have dmr radios.
Thanks for useful explanation!
I think it's wise to put here textual explanation "how to" also..
Thanks for the comment an great point! I will attempt to correct ASAP!
216PapaBravo
Thanks in advance, bro.:-)
This post of yours is very importnant instruction, since Yaesu left out pretty much crucial explanations, not for this radio only, but for many other models. Especially they miss crucial features! I own few Yaesu radios, and among other Yaesu VX 8 ( 2 weeks now) - in user manuals many explanations are missing to!
Good video, thanks

Excellent demonstration, thanks so much.

Nice job. I have an FTM-400 arriving soon; it is nice to see some folks posting on it's operating characteristics and capabilities. Have you figured out how to manage and organize the massive number of memory channels? Also, how's that Alinco power supply doing?
Thanks for the comment! First the power supply has been great - low heat good connections. What I did for the freq's was to list out all of the ones I wanted in the system, labeled each with tones or whatever was needed and started entering. I used the top band for the most common freq's that are used in my area, and the bottom band for the less used and sheriff, fire airport and the like.
Excellent clear explanation

Just got mine Friday (3rd), thanks for sharing. de K8WAY
Ken Way Have fun! KK6DEC
Unplug the microphone when you enable the cross-band mode.
That's a good point! I noticed on mine that the mic was going hot whenever it was transmitting in cross band mode. I kept hearing feedback if I had the HT anywhere near the mic on the 400.
Great !! Thanks a lot. 73s de PY2VR
Good informative video although it is disappointing that CrossBand function seems to be an after-thought by Yaesu on the FTM400. Beautiful touch display.
They could have made selecting CrossBand a real menu option rather than having to use a four-finger exercise to enable and disable it.
Limiting Cross Band to FM Analog is disappointing also. I haven't invested in Fusion yet but will down the road. So far my DV has been three years with DStar. On the IC2820 and ID5100, CrossBand is possible on FM analog and DV DStar.
Crossband is enabled on the ID5100 as a regular menu option, but in the IC2820, it is a three finger exercise.
it's all good.
The 146.650 is only .005 away from the 146.655 repeater pair, so not a good choice for regular use. It is good practice to use CTCSS or DCS to make sure the repeater doesnt lock up on tx when you are away and forgot to turn it off! Also not a bad idea to keep it on low power, or 10 watts. I had a TM-742 on repeat for years, worked great!
Great point, these were all set to 5 watts... thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the additional information. Am I correct in saying the backside in completely open? No cross piece like in front.
Yes it is. I forgot to tell you that I put the mounting brackets in place before I put the top on (note the holes on the side to mount the base unit with the mounting screws). This way I could mount the unit leaving the back open for the power and antenna lines.
Hi there this is another one of your great videos!! Thanks for the info. Im thinking about getting this radio soon. Watching your videos on the radio over and over. Is there anything you dont like about it?
73s from kelowna bc canada
So far so good. The only minor thing to me is the mounting bracket for the faceplate...seems a little weak. Once programmed and now used to the various functions a great radio. Thanks for the comment!
So if you want to hit a repeater with an HT you set the HT transmit freq to your mobile, mobile transmits to repeater Freq? Then set HT to receive repeater transmit freq?
Yes, but your mobile or base unit must be set in repeater mode for this to work. Then follow the instructions in the video. Thanks for the question.
Great to know thanks.
Good Video , Very understandable explanation. I just dont know what 216PapaBravo is ?
Hi Rick! Thanks for the comment on my video. To answer your question, 216PapaBravo is a name I created for this channel. It is derived from a Cessna 172 aircraft that I solo'd in many years ago, namely N216PB (when using aircraft phonic it is pronounced 216 Papa Bravo), hence the handle! 73's.
hello there love the video just wondering do you know if the ftm100de has cross band repeat thanks
Thinking about buying this mobile unit and this feature would be great for hiking away from the truck with HT's! KL6LDS
You hike away from the truck you’d have to leave the batter on or have a spare? Was that your plan?
Thanks for the video. Like the wood stand great job,do you have a plan for it? Need to make something for my soon to have ftm 400.
Unfortunately no I don't have a plan for the stand. I kinda made it up as I went, trying to fit all of the components in one compact unit. It is screwed and glued, then stained and completed with a resin finish.
Does anyone know if the manual has been updated??
What happens when you use the Mic on the repeater? does it broadcast to both receivers? Cancel out the repeater to normal mode? Smoke the machine??? (J/K)
Great video.how far can reach the CBR of yours using the handheld radio?
Like most radios, it depends on the quality of the handheld, your base antenna and the area you live in. I can easily get a mile when I am in line of sight of my antenna, not so much when I'm behind a hill or building. Thanks for the question.
Can you do this process in digital? Or does it only work with fm
How about analog to fusion? Visa versa?
Two questions: 1) I understand that in normal mode the FTM-400 will automatically detect if it is receiving a system fusion (C4FM FDMA) signal or analog signal and adjust the transmission response to the correct format. Now when I paused your video and read the message from the Yaesu tech, it says "During Cross Band Repeat Mode, it becomes a mode for exclusive use of analog". So does this mean that I cant contact my FTM-400 (in cross band repeater mode) using system fusion HT, and then the FTM-400 could repeat on the other band in analog? Seems a shame since i understand system fusion apparently has good quality. 2) Does the Automatic Transponder System still work while the FTM-400 is in Cross Band Repeat Mode?
So, I have a bofeng and can I set up the cross band repeater with just the one hand held. Also can this be done using the FT-100 as well.
Great video!!!! Thank you for doing the homework... K7GLK
It doesn't appear to be in the manual for the FTM-400XDR either.
I know you posted this 4 years ago - but I just saw it as I am considering getting the FTM 400 as my 1st dual band receiver after receiving my Technician license. Question - the wood assembly you have everything mounted on - did you buy it or make it yourself?
I made it myself! After carefull consideration and a lot of measuring, I took a single piece of pine board and started cutting. All joints are glued and screwed...just worked on it till I got it the way I wanted. The rack came out very nice. Thanks for noticing!
Thanks for time and effort sharing.. love this feature de KD1O
Steven Curry Had fun discovering and making this video. It is a great feature of this radio! 73's, KK6DEC
Have you done any digital communications (not digital voice), such as packet with this radio?
No I have not. I am relatively new to ham Radio and have not explored much beyond the basic voice radio. Thanks for the question!
is possible crosbband from digital vhf cc4fm to uhf fm?
Not sure, you'll have to check with Yaesu. Thanks for the question!
I tried, put my 440 into digital, both DN and VW, when I put into CBR mode, it reverts to FM analog, AMS off, and doesn't let me switch modes. But for fun I tried crossband repeating from AM to FM and it works fine!
You crossband to digital?
Hi, my old FT51r handy does exactly the same cross band repeating but here in the UK you need an NOV (notice of variation) on your license to use it that way, is it not the same over the pond with you?

Phil M6MRP
As far as I have researched...I could not find any restriction like that here in the states. As long as you transmit on freq's you are licensed for it is ok. thanks for the comment! 73's... Papabravo.
Have you had any issue with the squelch on the active vfo opening up regardless of squelch setting (even in maximum setting) for 2 minutes or so shortly after turning on the radio? This is happening to me in a mobile settup.
My setup is not mobile so I'm at a loss. Could be an issue with the car's electrical system interference?
When in CBR mode, does the FTM 400 allow you to xmit on any of the frequencies selected through the mic? I'm thinking in regards to operating while convoying, where distances could be about 25+ miles, I'd like to be able to transmit on my mobile radio on my car (which would be the 400), have the person in the seat next to me transmit using an ht linked to my 400 through CBR, and then be able to get out to other vehicles that have high power mobiles installed so that they can get back to me (if that makes sense).
As long as you set up the channels on both the FTM and your HT to each of UHF and VHF, the HT could transmit trough the FTM with your HT to your other mobile units and they would respond on the UHF that you selected. But once you set up the channels you are kinda stuck with them unless you reprogram to new channel settings...if that make sense...
I guess what I'm trying to get at is, can I use the hand mic attached to the FTM 400 and talk out with it in CBR mode?
Who built your wood case for your Yaesu? If you did can you make me one I will pay for it and the shipping.
I build it myself after much consideration and looking for a commercial one. I did not make plans for it (probably should have!). It was a long time ago, but was easy to make with only a few hand tools, 1 piece of 8x1x6' pine plank and some glue and screws. Thanks for the suggestion, but I barely have time these days to use the Yaesu FTM400 let alone build another holder for it. Good luck and thanks for the comment!
watch power set lo on simplex input channel.. and only use lo setting ..and should get cool deck for it.. bc get hot ...
works with C4FM too? or mixed FM - C4FM?
Not sure on that one. I will have to check.
Yes. And yes.
@@codywrites how and how? AMS is not an option...aka, C4FM or digital...
The boards you used for the stand,1x6 ?
Yes, I believe it was a 1x8x4' piece of clear pine plank (easy to work with and light weight). I was able to design and cut all of the pieces from the one board. I left room for the base unit to ventilate any heat from the front and able to load the unit from the back, with space on the front of the stand for the display and speaker. I also left a space in the front of the enclosure to allow the wires to go through and coil (if needed in front of the unit). I should have made my design on paper in case anyone (like you) wanted to make it. If you watch the beginning of the vid you might be able to see some of the detail. I did drill, countersink and screw the side to base support pieces together, then glued the remaining top and front piece on. Sanding, stain and finish. Hope this helps!
No need for any crossband repeating Radio Systems like this I made one that was very cheap and simple it's based on using a surecom Sr - 328 duplex repeater controller it's simply uses audio outputs to do the work all's you have to do is set a receiver such as a scanner on 446.0 and then that would be the receive going into the repeater controller then simply connect the correct radio cable to the controller and there you have it
Can't you spell YAESU? It's on the top of the manual.
Well Casey, I guess I can't
Sorry to correct you but the spelling is Y A E S U . vy 73!
Thanks, spelling was not my strong suit...I should have looked at the box!
THAT IS NICE TO KNOW,, BUT YOU MUST GET PERMISSION TO DO THIS UNLESS YOU OWN BOTH REPEATERS..
License ID on air?
