Amazing woman with an amazing career... The oldest of 10 children. Her appearance on The Jeffersons was just the tip of the iceberg. Known as one of the worlds greatest elocutionists in NYC in 1940, Ms. Cully taught acting for 15 years in Florida before moving to Hollywood and accumulating 50 years of acting credits BEFORE appearing on The Jeffersons. And on top of all she accomplished, Ms. Cully married her one and only husband, Mr. James M. Brown Jr, who was 20 years younger, with whom she raised 4 children. Ms. Zara Cully January 26 1892- February 28,1978 Her Image Award from The NAACP was awarded posthumously on June 9th, 1978.
Fabulous actress. By the time she acquired the role of 'Mother' Jefferson, Zara Cully had accumulated a long list of acting credentials spanning a half-century.
I love this episode and I've watched only maybe 10 minutes of it. Mother Jefferson trying so hard to get people's attention when you see so many elderly people struggling to have the same interactions with people how often they're just routinely ignored and pushed away. Our culture needs to respect our elderly people more.and what what do we do to them when they're older we just throw away in nursing homes to die😢😢😢😢😢.
I grew up on this, reruns before my parents came home from work. I like to think that I listened to many influences, but chose my own path, as best I could.
Lol... What Mother Jefferson told Louise about why she fell in the kitchen. She should've mopped the floor, because Louise left the floor greasy. She was the queen of shade.
Funny in the first few seasons, mother jefferson threw shade at louise and then when she passed and they made Florence a regular, she threw shade at George for the last few seasons. Nice balance.
@@jamesorsby7553 Mother Jefferson seemed oblivious to the fact that she was often unkind to Louise. She once talked about her own MIL and how awful she was and that Louise was lucky she didn't have that problem.
Norman Lear was a genius. He came up with a lot of TV shows like All in the family/ The Jeffersons/ Good times / Maude/ Sanford and son/ The facts of life/ One day at a time/these are just a couple of them. Boy I wish we had TV shows like this back on TV today
The detective shows Louise rattles off were real shows at the time. It's funny because of the way she says them so even if you don't know them you can still enjoy it.
The old detective (Barnaby Jones), the fat detective (Cannon), the bald detective (Kojak), the cowboy detective (McCloud), the raincoat detective (Columbo). Bonus point question: Who was the TV woman detective during the time this episode first aired (Hint: was on the same network the cowboy detective and raincoat detective were on) ?
The clapbacks from everyone are always priceless! "Florence" was missed in this episode! I never liked when they swaped the son. Even if only temporary.
Their hair got ostracized and criminalized. “ They “ talked bad about their hair and even discriminated against them for employment! So they started wearing weaves and wigs to “ fit in “. Now they have gotten creative with it and it has taken another life form.
I just love mother Jefferson. It's awesome to know that she was born in 1892.

@pattymelt-go3fv Amazing knowledge you shared! I knew most of that info, but not in such perfect detail as you did.
Zara Cully was a hella actress well into her 80s!
She played Mother Jefferson to the hilt - the absolute Queen of Shade!
The show was never the same after Mother Jefferson died! She was so funny!!
What episode did she die?
@@chitownnaijagirl222 There was no episode. It was just mentioned in the beginning of season 5.
I agree. I only bought the first 2 seasons of _The JEFFERSONS_ b'cos of Mother Jefferson's appearances.
@@MrCJ-qz9dl I like the later years a lot though. Especially with Florence.
@@Asukenick tbh l only like Marla Gibbs on *227* .
Love that smirk mother Jefferson gave the camera
They don't make themselves like this anymore,,I must admit here in 2024 am still enjoying the show
MJ was such a character 😅 loved her ❤

I absolutely love Mother Jefferson.
Love our elders.

And on the contrary, elderly people need to respect others as well. Who wants to be around a critical, disrespectful, negative nelly all day?!?
Elderly or young you get what you give should be the standard. Some people get treated accordingly.

Relax! It’s a TV show! 🙄
@@molliemae6855 I think you're completely missing the point. TV shows oftentimes correlate to real life and lessons to be learned.
I love Mother Jefferson
Mother Jefferson was a great part of the show. What a Mama😂😅.❤
Lol... What Mother Jefferson told Louise about why she fell in the kitchen. She should've mopped the floor, because Louise left the floor greasy. She was the queen of shade.
Mother Jefferson was a gangster. Louise never stood a chance.
Yes she did and she had plenty of chances, she just didn't take them.
Omg It's Saturday night 10:00 p.m. I'm 14 years old and I'm loving this '70s best show era🎉
You must be grounded?
MOTHER JEFFERSON WAS A MESS CAN'T HELP BUT LOVE HER

Easy Wheezy! 😂

Funny in the first few seasons, mother jefferson threw shade at louise and then when she passed and they made Florence a regular, she threw shade at George for the last few seasons. Nice balance.
But Mother Jefferson is annoying because she's wrong about Louise. Florence is funny because she's right about George.
But it wasn't ever about whether Mother Jefferson was right or wrong about Louise. It was all about the mother in law/daughter in law dynamic.
@@jamesorsby7553 Mother Jefferson seemed oblivious to the fact that she was often unkind to Louise. She once talked about her own MIL and how awful she was and that Louise was lucky she didn't have that problem.

Dang, each and every person made great replies! I agree with everyone. That’s rare!
One of my favorite shows in the early eighties
I haven't been the best daughter in law have I? Well I'm sure you're doing the best you can.
Fun fact the Jefferson’s didn’t live in a deluxe apartment in the sky. It was all filmed on a soundstage in Los Angeles. Hahaha
Mother Jefferson forever
She’s fallen and she can’t get up!

The moment I realized I have seen this episode 😂😮😮
Loved Mother Jefferson. She had her character moves, her lines and gestures polished to perfection.
My daughter grandmother played that same prank on her husband and son.😊
The Jefferson’s reside in a small apartment with no kids and Louise is a housewife. Why do they need a maid?!😮😂
Best show the Jefferson ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

One of my favorite episodes. I think Mother Jefferson doesn't want to admit she really likes Louise.
As much of a pain as Mother Jefferson is, they were terribly rude!
Weezy and mother jefferson classy and elegant beauty with in👌

But, she reminds me of the hell my father's mom put my mother through.😮
Wow. The fact that you are aware of that speaks volumes. I hope you guys stood by your mother during those times.
Louise was always dressed beautifully ❤
Poor mother Jefferson . I feel like her right now.
Yes. Yrs ago one tea bag could last 2-3 cups. 😀now even one tastes so bland

Took a “full” can of pop from the fridge and later (unopened) threw in the sink.. clearly it was empty given the sound of the ping.
