    I want some low voltage low amp LED lights to come on depending on the direction.
    Green for forward and yellow for reverse. I can’t just connect the LED’s directly to the motor current so I need a switch that senses the polarity going to the motor and opens or closes to let my low voltage dc power activate my LED’s. I have no idea how to do this. But you look like a guy who might be able to help.

    Applying -12V to one side of the coil and +12V to the other side of a standard 12V automotive relay as advocated here is equivalent to applying a potential difference of 24 volts across the coil designed for 12 volts and will burn out the coil since it will cause twice the current to flow through the coil winding. Instead, connect the +12V side of the coil to ground and the relay will function as designed.

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  2 года назад +4

      It's a simple DC coil..... on this style of relay the coil terminals are marked with #85 and #86. That's it. Polarity is irrelevant to energize the coil. If it mattered, the terminals would be marked with POS+ and/or NEG-, and they are not. Just like an old school incandescent 12V light build, polarity is neither marked on the bulb, or relevant to make it light up. Telling someone to apply 12 volt negative to the positive side of the coil isn't doing anyone any good if the terminals are not marked. The only time polarity matters when connecting the coil is when a relay has a built in diode to prevent the relay sticking on under inductive loads. Not all automotive style relays come with a diode. The relay in this video did not contain a diode. Thanks for the comment.

      @@SlipFitGarage "If it mattered, the terminals would be marked with POS+ and/or NEG-, and they are not. "
      Yes you are correct. Usually when marked it's because they have an indicator light / LED or they have a flyback diode for EMF protection.

    • @AztecWarrior69_69
      @AztecWarrior69_69 9 месяцев назад

      Um this may just be an oversight and I know it says 12v- but most likely it means 0V or Negative. And most likely he has a an alarm the literally says 12v- And why would they put it that way. Well that's because there may be other voltages and it need the 12v- OR because the unit is putting OUT 12v-.
      Two things
      Put your volt meter voltmeter pos lead to pos battery and neg lead to neg battery, you will read 12v
      Now reverse the leads, it says -12v
      What you are describing is when two totally separate power sources that are combined. Just look at PC power supplies that have 5v, -5V and 12v, -12v. If you combine the 5v and 12v you won't get 17v, why because they are sharing the commons.

Dome has option on, off, door I check the wire and it has power to the negative and no power to the postive end on the toggle dome pin. But has power to - and + on the dome bulb connector? My plan was to add a relay with the led and use the dome switch as the toggle. 30 to fuse box, inline fuse, battery. 87 to distribution block to acc(led). 85 to ground and 86 dome switch + positive. I was going to wire like above, but then after watching your video I think I might have to rewire the relay. Any suggestions?

    Hi Brian, I need some help getting my head around an aftermarket android stereo with climate control I installed in my car. All the functions in the climate control works except for the rear window defroster. I was told that the canbus controls it. I tried different canbus settings but nothing worked. Long story short, what I discovered is that there is no wire that connects the switch for rear window defroster and wire in the harness. I was able to locate the pin that turns on the wire rear window defroster, connected the wire but still does not work. I checked the voltage on the wire and pins from the switch and both show 12 v. I think If I change the polarity like you have shown in the video it should trigger the rear window defroster. How can I identify 12v- from the switch?
    Do you think adding a relay like you show in the video would solve my issue? I apologize for the descriptive question.

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  3 года назад

      I can't answer your question specifically without seeing it in person. However, as far as how you would identify negative 12 volts.... you need to use a Multimeter. With a digital multimeter, if you connect the red test lead to positive, and the black test lead to negative, It should read somewhere around 12 volts. But if you put the red test lead on the negative and the black test lead on the positive, it will read -12 volts. There should be a "-" in front of the 12vdc on the meter display. That is how you detect polarity with a meter.

    Can both my constants be directly from the battery? With terminal “30” fused off course

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  3 года назад

      You can get your constant positive 12 volts from wherever you like. Just remember.... one of those constants only needs to supply a small amount of current to the coil (magnet) inside the relay, the other constant needs to supply the full current load to whatever device you're trying to run with the relay. If this is a high current load such as electric fans or halogen lighting, you need to make sure all the wire gauge and fuses leading up to the "switch" side of the relay (terminals 87, 87A, 30) can handle the full load. Wire gauge and fuses that operate the coil (magnet) inside the relay (terminals 85, 86) can be rated for far less current because the typical ISO, or Bosch style automotive relay coil (magnet) typically draws only 200mA or less. (0.2.... or, 2 tenths of 1 amp.). But just remember EVERYTHING coming directly from a battery needs to be fused, not just the high current wire going to terminal 30 (or 87, 87A). Even the wire going to the low current coil (magnet) inside the relay (terminals 85, 86) can get rubbed through on bare metal and burn your car down if it's not fused. Hope this helps.... good luck with your project!

    • @AztecWarrior69_69
      @AztecWarrior69_69 9 месяцев назад

      NO. Audios is a wave which is AC. If you did that it would be turning on that relay on and off. You would have to convert it back to DC. With a rectifier and maybe even a capacitor.
      But if you want it to be turning on and of, you are better off using a solid state relay or use mosfets.

    Can we it also reverse from positive to negative?

      Sure, just wire it the opposite way...

      I don't use PWM with the relay. Not with this kind of relay....

    Hi Brian!
    I think I'm really close to a solution to my problem of reversed polarity to 1157 sockets in my electric scooter, where the body of the bulb gets the (+) charge and the bottom contacts have a (-) charge. This won't work with LED bulbs! It was suggested to me to use two SPDT relays to switch the polarity to the socket. I don't quite understand the diagram, and I would have to try it to see how it works. My question to you is: can I use DPDT switches to accomplish the same result without the current loss with the use of relays? There are 3 sockets I have to reverse. I can provide the diagram if needed.

      Hello. Yes, it does work with LED bulbs..... that was an LED that I used in the video demonstration.

      After re-reading your question, I think I misunderstood it originally. If you need to reverse polarity on a light bulb socket, can't you just cut the two wires and switch them around? That would be easier than dealing with switches and relays.

      That is an easy fix for a single function bulb. My dilemma involves dual function tail/brake lights and a high/low beam head light. how would you switch two negative wires and one positive to two positives and one negative?

    I was thinking... I could use it to change positive and negative position 60 times per second. Thus will result in a AC.
