I wish for just an hour that I could be as physically impacted by something like this. Either this guy was on some decent shrooms or he was just hamming it up for the camera.
Granted i've not yet had a chance to use a rift or vive but these reactions seem a little overboard even if he is essentially blindfolded on a slow mechanical bull.

well, guess you're in for a surprise. The key is, he isnt blindfolded. A lot (to say the least) of what constitutes reality is created in our brain. Proper VR headsets, trick the brain really hard. If you're very familiar with 3d technology and the mechanics behind it, you can fight it to some extend, but people who are unaware/unfamiliar its a hell of a ride

Rather than fighting the immersion I'm more worried about having to force the immersion. If the HMDs are as good as some would say then I have no doubt that i'd get sucked in very easily. It's just that most of these videos like this show a bunch of normies (for the lack of a better word) flopping around like it's the early 1900s and they've never seen a motion picture before or something.
I've only used a vue fx (which is similar to a samsung gear) without the stereoscopic 3D so I don't really have the best frame of reference.
Hopefully I'll get to demo one of the high-end HMDs at somepoint but I have no plans to buy one until they have good wireless and a higher resolution (I.E. Vive 2 or Rift 2) and hopefully some more comfortable looking controllers...

There is probably a bit of theatrics when a camera is pointed at them, but teh whole thing is in its infancy and while I havent used Samsung gear, everybody says it doesnt compare. A lot depends on responsiveness and graphics to suspend the disbelieve, but its just a matter of time. I myself am waiting for gen2 as well, although hopefully then StarVR, which isnt often talked about (jsut recently heard it about myself). The peripheral FOV is something i'm bothered with and starVR would fix that.

Vr is not that immersive or realistic because you know where you are really at. It is like trying to pretend to be scared when you know someone is trying to prank you

Not when it's well calibrated, high res, and has a physical sensation added to it. If you are on a moving platform like here and it matches up to what you are seeing in the goggles then your brain WILL accept it. It's no good saying, yeah, but you know it's not real. You might know that but your senses will say otherwise and that is what makes people react strongly to good VR. It overrides your rational mind and tricks parts of your brain into accepting the new augmented reality. Which has been the aim of VR from the start. It's only recently that developers have started to really achieve this.
You really can't judge it without trying it. It won't make you forget the real world but it will mess with your senses, your perception and your balance.
