Game gets a lot of flack these days, armchair critics ignoring what the game does so well. Each 16bit Vania did something above the rest. You mention the attention to detail, and that's what 4 offers best: it's the peak presentation of the Castlevania world. Brims with life, mystery, dread and atmosphere.
When it comes to the 8way whip I don't think it was a mistake, but that the devs didn't care. They wanted to make a game anyone could play and complete, hearing all the music and seeing all the stages they created. Ahead of it's time in an era of easy but cinematic action games.
