- My name is Carson Sleep, I’m 23 years old and am a 6th generation rancher on the Sleep Ranch.
Our ranch is located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where my family settled and started ranching in 1883.
I work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, and my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town. We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.
To God be the Glory

Love every video you post. Great content. Great crew. Great family.
And you really care about your animals, good hearted folks.
Make them longer? They are very entertaining.
Thank you! That really means a lot!
It's real good to see that when you have problems like the calf or broken four-wheeler you all handle it calmly with a kind of good humor... no excessive drama. As I've said before, it just makes for more natural, realistic and entertaining videos.
Well thanks Jack!
Great job seeding Carson
Thanks for the adventure. Glad you didn't have to shoot the four wheeler 😂
😂luckily four wheelers recover from a broken leg better than cows or horses
Great video Carson
Thanks a lot Kevin!
Glad u got your calf back with the herd
Thanks
Can't believe I missed this video! Good one, Thanks Carson. That last shed you found was a dandy!!
Thanks Ellis!
You could feel your relief in having that calf back with the herd.
Excellent video Carson
Thank you for your effort
Cheers
Thanks Scott!
Good job guys
Thanks Lester!
Literally, my heart rate skyrocketed and I felt instant panic just by reading the title of this video!! 😂 Few things can cause instant reactions like this but the words, "cows are out," will do it every time. Add in the word interstate or highway? Yup. Instant panic. So happy everything worked out. Hubby and I are beginning to think we might have to juggle snow storms through the whole summer season the way it seems to be going up here! Dang! Planting or working out on equip. in that weather is brutal.
I had the same reaction! I've looked for a few animals in the middle of the night and it ain't fun. I've also tried roping an animal from the back of a four-wheeler and the back of a pickup. It's harder than it sounds.
@@nebraskafarmer9015 oh yeah it is harder to rope when you're not on a horse that can keep moving with the beast being roped AND have that solid roping horn to dally onto to get locked in. Ive watched some others on RUclips trying to rope from a 4 wheeler and I I just cringe and want to hide my head... guess I dont want to see the impending wreck. Ha Ha!!!
Thanks RSP, glad you could share in our concern! Haha hope you guys are doing well!
I know what's wrong with it!! It ain't got no gass in it 🤣🤣
So nice to watch these videos. Jaques is my brother. I miss him soooooo much!!! 🥲
😂😂 Nice to hear from you Monique! I’ve heard a lot of good things about you and I can tell Jaques is very fond of his sister. I look forward to meeting you someday!
@@sleepranch Good to hear that only good things have been told!! Lol! Looking forward to meeting you guys too. Send some South-African love to my bro, please :-D
Well I'm glad you got the calf back in. It's always something going on when we have cattle
That’s true, thanks Terry!
great video. You and Jaques make a good team.
Thanks Kevin!
nice one, keep safe and have a good day
..
Thanks Bob, you too!
Ohhh that looks so cold!!!
Man that brings back a few memories. Nothing like trying to wrangle livestock in the dark.
No kidding Ken!
Wow…. They can be a pain sometimes!!!! Thinking about him getting into the road after dark makes it hard relax 😞I’m sure not much rest for you. Thanks for taking us along. Be safe
Thanks for coming Michael, ya it could have been bad but glad it wasn’t. Take care!
A good job well done, regards from England
Thanks David, take care!
Appreciate your great attitude in spite of a runaway calf and broken 4-wheeler! Great Video!
Thanks Delton!
Glad it workout for you and the calve, thanks for sharing
Thanks John!
Great video. Love watching your videos 👍
Thanks Jerry!
I have had cows on inter state. Not fun ours did not end well. Thank the Lord yours ended well. You fell so helpless when it happens.
Thanks David, I’m sorry it didn’t end well for you guys
Like your videos an I like when you have to work hard to get things done keep up the good work thank you
Thank you Hector!
That South-African accent is heeeeeavy Jaques 🤣🤣
😂😂😂
That was scary for all kinds of reasons! His mama probably had some words for him!!!
Yes I think so!
It sux when get a call in the middle of the night and the cops say hey there’s a cow standing in middle of the 4 lane And man. I want to come deer hunting
Haha it does suck Kenny!
Nice Work!
Thanks Charlie!
Hey Carson,
Holy shed hunting when your doing other things, that was impressive and you had a couple really nice one's. I've got about 200 whitetales running around my ranch and I usually find one shed! Lol
If you take that calf to your forest service lease your probably going to be up there in December again rounding him up,it just seems once they know they can crawl through the fence they always do it.
Just curious what your seeding rate is for a drier climate?
Thanks Jeff! You’re probably right about the calf haha we were putting somewhere between 12 to 15 pounds of seed per acre for the alfalfa!
Forgot to mention thanks to Jaques as well
Kind of hard seeing the calf in the dark. Enjoyed the video. How many acres did you plant.
Ya it was hard to see! That field was about 100 acres
Good luck finding your calf and getting him back with your herd
What do you think about when you are out there working. I bet you can't remember. It is just like working in the garden, I never remember what I was thinking about.
Good question! I can’t remember either haha probably anything and everything like you do in the garden!
Improving y your roping skills might be helpful
Where that dam horse go?
where's the cab tractor at that's gotta suck planting in the snow in may
We were using if for other things but man I wish I had it!
@@sleepranch 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Always something with young cattle. We had a 9 month old purebred bull calf get his head stuck between a chained gate and the post the other day while we were in town at my daughters dance recital. He eventually choked himself I reckon. Came home to him hanging there dead as a doornail. Very not cool.
Man that’s a bummer, if something can go wrong it seems that it will.
He went all night not eating now he will have MilkShake. Night time is the worst for animals to out. Glad everything went will in the morning. That is I nice mix for your fields. It will replenish you ground when turned over in the spring for a new crop. The soil looks so nice. Great video. Thank you. God Bless.
.
Thank you Margaret!
Glad you caught little diablo, hope the calf learned to stay in. Never a fun call to get. Fun video I was hoping you would get it roped with Jacque helping. Stay safe and healthy.
I was hoping so too Badger Pa! Stay safe and healthy as well!
That's so crazy. I heard it snowed in Wyoming yesterday and it wasn't even in the forecast. We are hitting 100 today and 103 with a big drought. Glad you got the calf in. Man that looked cold.
Wow that sounds warm for May! I hope you guys get out of the drought, thank you Lynn!
Glad you were able to get the Calf back to safety. It is good that the mother was there to help keep the calf calmer. If a accident were to happen on the interstate would be be liable, as the calf owner, to pay for damages?
If you hit an animal with a vehicle deer, cattle dog, etc you are at fault. No difference than if it was a person you need to be in control of your vehicle.
Thanks Ben, I don’t think we’d be liable. We’ve had cattle get hit oh the highways in the hills before but the I believe the law requires drivers to drive “defensively” so ranchers are pretty protected!
We use to take cows on the US forest. A main road went right through the middle of it. One side was spring pasture and the other was summer. There was thirty five miles of let down fence. During the fall they always were ready to go home. Most of the time we did okay but there were times they hit the main road and we had to g get them in. Some got hit
I don’t doubt that Leigh, it’s hard to control what cows do and they still have a mind of their own as you know!
No easy task when they don’t cooperate. You two seem to work and get along so well together.👍❤️😂
Years ago wife left the gate open and we had 13 calves out on I-275! State Police knocked on the door at midnight! Fortunately they were still on the bottle! So we loaded several bottles that did the trick! Not fun at all! I remember one year we lost several hundred acres of corn due to snow on Memorial Day!
Wow I’m glad you guys got them back in! Doesn’t sounds like fun at all!
@@sleepranch it wasn’t in the dark!
U should get a strong flashlight.
Hello, I enjoy Your Videos. But tell me please, why love many farmers in their Videos show so often and several minutes their faces. All of you could show us material of animals, technology and Landscape.
Hi Frank, I try to have a good mix of all of it and some videos are probably worse than others. But thanks for expressing your preferences!
That calf was just trying to get to the rest area.
😂
Dang calf..... he apparently knows where he is is going...There's always one trouble maker...He must be related to the "Jumper" cow that you had... Can't believe that calf was away from his mom all night... bet he sure was hungry when he found her...... Hope he doesn't make a practice of doing that again....Next time he may not be as lucky....So glad he didn't cause a accident....Hope your 4 wheeler won't be hard to fix... Anyway hope your day goes better....Talk soon...Have a great day!!
They must be related! 😂I hope he doesn’t make a habit of it either. Take care Deb!
RUclips is not letting me like your video!
