Tenere 700 Spark Plug Mod For Easy Access

- This is my take on the Yamaha Tenere 700 spark plug mod that has been getting around the internet lately - I can vouch that it works and is well worth doing. By simply removing a useless plastic wiring harness bracket permanently, you can gain access to both spark plugs from the right hand side of the bike without removing much else at all. I also show a handy spark plug tool that is lightweight and easy to add to your kit, that will remove the T7 plugs with ease. I also replace my plugs with some NGK Iridium, the bike only has 10,000km on it but it will be good for another 30k+ now. See our main RUclips channel here: / mvdbr
I didn't come up with this mod. Credit & thanks go to the following:

If you're having trouble getting the left-hand coil fully out, try moving the wiring harness above it forward towards the front of the bike as you're pulling the coil up and out. That may be easier than pushing the wires backwards. I'm not sure (can't remember) which way worked for me in the end.
Couldn't be done unless you forced it out. It tops out on the frame. You need to remove the ABS controller. See my video for more mod trick to remove the coil out.
I just did the complete change in about an hour. The easiest way to get the spark plug coils out is to get a length of electrical wire (~300mm long), double it over to form a loop at one end. Now twist the 90 degree connector on top of the coil tube so it is easier to access. Take your wire loop & poke it down (from directly above the coil tube) so that the loop slips over the 90 degree connector. Now you can pull directly up on the tube, no need for any spray lubricants. Because you are pulling straight up, there's no need to lever anything & you won't break the tube. You will find that if you just loosen the ABS/rectifier module you can then push it to the left & get direct access to the plug. The left plug is just as easy to change as the right using this method. There is no need to remove crash bars, radiator or rearrange any of the wires. You just undo the fuel tank, twist it 180 degrees & sit it where the seat goes. No need to remove any hoses, just the electrial connector. Also, place something over your battery to prevent the chance of shorting your tank across the terminals. That method that Clubby shows in his video is absolute rubbish & makes you think its a hard job when, with a bit of thought, its actually quite easy & quick. If anyone's in the Brisbane area & needs a hand then let me know, always happy to help!
Thanks very much, not to discredit the guys before you, but yours is the best spark plug change video so far. Very informative and very well demonstrated. 👍
Awesome Paul glad you got something out of it, thanks for the comment cheers 🤙
This looks much easier than another method I watched. Thank you very much for taking the time to put this video together. Very helpful.
Very informative...sparkplug removal and replacement...always a challenge on modern motorcycles
Cheers mate yeah even on these basic bitches things are getting tight 😬
Good video mate. Makes it look less difficult than I thought. Thanks for sharing
No worries mate thanks for leaving a comment 🤘
Well played mate, that’s the one! Gotta get my hands on one of those sweet little KTM plug tools, looks perfect for the tool roll.
Good stuff Les was hoping you'd catch that. I ended up drilling the rubber grommet inside the tool a bit bigger and it grips onto the ceramic part of the plug just nicely now. Perfect solution, even does the front axle haha 🤙
Plug tool mod! Double duty, small & light, definitely qualifies for the tool roll !
Love the mvdbr poster. Great job as usual bud.
It's rad aye! Thanks Bo 🤘
Hi Josh Great video. The simple way to get you plugs out of the hole after you've unscrewed them, is carry a small length of plastic tube (150mm) with an ID just smaller than the OD of the porcelain part of the plug. You simply push it over the porcelain (by feel, its not that difficult )it will stretch easily over and grab the plug. Simples 😀 Most hardware stores have a range of this tube. If you have to buy a meter, Take the off cut as a syphon hose.
Thanks for the tip mate! I actually just drilled out the rubber grommet in the KTM plug tool a bit bigger and it works a treat now :)
Nice work. I was not looking forward to my first plug change but feel inspired now. Phew.
Thanks for that. I was concerned about my up-coming plug swap. Slightly less so now!
yeah...the other two fellas(chubby&chubby) made it feel like algebra, but is not difficult at all. your video is easy to understand
Wow lot of work to just change plugs especially without doing mod 😳😬🧐🤔informative vid Josh thanks for posting 👍
Thanks for watching mate! I hope you're not really selling that 1090 😬
@@mvdbrextra5216 yeah I’m am selling the 1090 unfortunately got to down size a little too much power and weight off-road 😬😟
Aw man :(
Great Video, look forward to watching you do the valve clearances, cheers
Can't say I'm looking forward to it 😜
Great video Josh you good logical steps and well explained
Thanks
Dave
Nice mod. A battery powered ratchet comes in handy.
great video mate👌
wow 😳 that looks like a mission and half
Did you really just watch a video about Tenere spark plugs Noodles what the hell 😁 Thx mate
@@mvdbrextra5216 yes of coarse i did and i didn’t even have a beer on my hand
No beer, brutal! 😩
Great how to video 📹 👏. Just subscribed. How do you find the Pro Taper bars...? Cheers, Steve
Thanks mate, yeah bars are great, tiny bit higher than stock :)
@@mvdbrextra5216 Thanks...can you tell me which model of Pro taper bars they are please...? Cheers Steve

Thanks for the Clip, it will helps a lot!
Nice work Josh
Thanks Ian 😎 Still waiting for that pic!
Good work josh
Thx mate!
Very helpful video cheers dude
Hi Josh, did the mod yesterday. Cable try out and wires out of the way, however all looks like a great practical mod but can you give me any clue on how tight the coils are as I could not move the coils. Any clues other than your spin the outer cover. presently the bike is back together with original plugs. Looking to give it another go soon.
Mate the left hand one took me a long while to get out, they are wedged in there pretty good. The near one being easier to get hands on was a bit easier but still a bit of a mission. Keep at it is all I can advise. And definitely grease up the sealing rings before refitting 👍
@@mvdbrextra5216 Thanks, as I thought more patience needed
Got the bastards, and yes the LH took a long time. Thank heaven for the life of Iridium plugs. and you can do it with the tank on.
Josh, do you think something like this would work - FLEX DRIVE FLEXIBLE SOCKET EXTENSION ADAPTOR 200mm
Mate I have no way of knowing, old mate in this vid mentions the length the extension needs to be ruclips.net/video/v1aDWEoZLAE/видео.html
Great vid. Thanks
Off topic a bit, what crash bars are they?
Plug change every 20.000km. So it's not like you would have to do it every now and then. Also grease on the spark coils is a NO NO. There's a reason why they come dry and you want them to stay on and not move a tiny bit! And get rid of that extra air filter you will fuck up the air fuel mixture. All these "mods" will bring problems on their own.
No issues thus far 😜
Stroker spark plugs ay, an old trick but a goody.
🤠

I sold 1 of my motorcycles 1 more to go and I will be in the land of adventure I'm not sure what I gonna get yet But I've been looking at the new KTM890Adventure r
Good to see we're inspiring some of ya's to get into ADV! It's good fun man, 890 would be mint. Looking forward to your exploring the USA vids :)
Awesome mod anything that makes it easier, Unsure if its correct but might be worth looking into, if you drop your bike in water and flood the motor ,rotate the back wheel backwards pushes the water out the way it came in??I herd someone say before, might be worth investigating 😉🍻
Sounds like it should work in theory haha but I'm a bit dubious 😁 Thanks for the comment man
@@mvdbrextra5216 I have tried this and it 100% doesn't work on the Tenere. The bit you missed is that you have to turn the bike upside down! You also have to remove the airbox otherwise it will suck the water back into the engine when you try to start it and lock again. However yes the method is viable and I've seen it done on dirtbikes.
@@lukeh5725 thanks for the info :)
Still counts as weight reduction mod too!
Oath! Should see how easy it wheelies after removing that bit of plastic 😆😩
Im looking forward to doing this next to the river in the mud 😂
Bugger me.. this is ridiculous.. You're doing a fantastic job.. but I think I'll get a different bike.
Ahh don't let a bit of spannerin' put you off a great bike :)
Спасибо что предупредили как это сложно сделать.
Disregard my last comment, SRC got it
Yeah the stainless uppers from SRC 👍
@@mvdbrextra5216I'm up for crash bars on my T7, SRC is my choice, might be an obvious question but why stainless over the aluminium?
Fair bit stronger I'd imagine, hopefully worth the extra weight 👍
Well I just did your mod and have to say this could be BS, unless you show us on video how you pulled out the left side without the removal of the ABS controller. Looks good on video, but you dont show actual removal then have to say BS. I'm going to add to this video to show you a easy way to pull the coils out and remove the spark plugs. Due to I am left handed it was impossible to lift them out, un less you check out my added mod.
I got mine out without removing anything else, lol what do I have to gain by lying about it 🤦♂️ You have to bend the flexible bottom end of the coil pack to get it out, it ain't easy but once you know what to do it's easy enough to replicate
@@mvdbrextra5216 ok, I figured that it need to be forced out because it was pinned to the top and that was the only place to go that had room. I didn't go that deep and call you a liar, I just said BS, beautiful skies. 👍🤣👍. Good video anyways, but next time show the hard stuff as well, everyone can do the easy things. It the hard things that need explaining. That's why RUclips is so great.👍
Initially I wasn't going to make a video at all, but I wanted to try to explain a few things that the original video I watched didn't show. It's easy for people to criticize but for starters I don't think there's any way I could get a camera in there to show it being removed anyway, there's barely enough room for ya hand in there. And no it's not that easy to show the easy things, making videos like this is time consuming and adds a lot more complication to the process of doing the job, so you'll excuse me if I have a bad attitude towards whiners.
Grip the top of the coil pack where the cable joins (with the cable removed first obviously) get another finger under the lip of the seal which is what we are trying to loosen off and hold it to the top of the coil pack then twist and pull up. It will take some time the first go but but this way you grip the rubber seal to the side of the coil pack which help you move it rather than just trying to twist the rubber seal or pulling up separately. I also loosened off but didn't remove the ABS module on the left which makes it easier to get the coil pack out.
Thank you for sharing this mod as it really helps and recommend everyone to do this before you find yourself having to as the first time is the worse.
