The main point is that Japanese animation, like much of its technology, stagnated during its "cold-war" with America in the 1930s and hot war in the 1940s. The truth is that revolutions in plastics and integrated circuits (from media materials to CGI) were inter-related to the art which a culture could create - and none of these revolutions (art and technology) originated in Japan - they originated in America. Throughout its history, Japanese animation has always been a step behind American animation - because Japanese innovation has always been a step behind American innovation - from cells to computer canvassing, Japan always develops a "version" of an American product, but never innovates an original product itself. You can't copy or "imitate" someone else until that someone else creates an original. "Anime" has always been a "Cheap copy" of American animation, from its production structure to its artistic methodology, much like the Chinese make "Cheap copies" of products. Sure, the Japanese gave it a different "interpretation" and "style", but America provided the brush, the paint, and the canvas before the Japanese even knew what the word "Animation" meant ("Anime" has no etymological roots Japanese, but in an American English, who's geneology goes back to latin). That doesn't mean those watches and anime aren't "Good". But it does mean they are not original to Japan. It also means that the next step in animation (the next "Big idea"), like other innovations from Adaptive optics to nanotechnology will - as always - almost certainly be innovated in America, not Japan. The Japanese will then have the chance to mimic and "create their version" of that innovation, in their own domesticated style.

@I mug You're free to add any innovation that you think the Japanese invented to advance the progress of animation or entertainment in general. I think you';ll find the pickings rather slim, the vast majority a derivation/clone of already existing technology. If you want "themes" - please child - Japan's greatest literary works such as the Tale of Genji have no standing beside the works of the Bible and Shakespeare. Literally, all the thematic prose and structures of noted Japanese anime are derived from Western origins and tradition - NOT Japanese origins - from Astroboy to Evangelion to Cowboy Bebop to Sword Art Online, etc, etc, etc. Take the Pokemon Go phenomenon; Augmented reality and Virtual reality are the "Next Step" in the advancement of Anime. Interestingly, people thought the technology was developed in Japan because it was "Pokemon". Duh...it's not. It was an American company that created Pokemon Go; they could have partnered with Blizzard or Disney and made Warcraft or Mickey's Go and it likely would have been just as successful. The point is that the core innovation of Pokemon Go had nothing to do with Japan except for the shallow exterior and marketing. "Augmented reality" actually has its origins in the 1950s in the Naval Research Center and the participating companies (same industrial network that developed the first automatic gun firing system in the 1930s, the world's first practical "robot", and started installing them on US warships beginning in 1939. Signals Processing, Modern software, Semiconductors, etc, etc, etc, they all came from these companies). What is now called "Augmented Reality" was once called "Heads-up Display" (or "HUD"), which would overlay environmental and target information on the airplane's front window. A similar concept was developed for baseball in the US when the first graphical overlays of statistics were added to the live action. One thing is for certain, again: Japan will continue to "adapt" and simply clone and appropriate this technology for its own purposes, with or without license, whether stealing Supercomputer architecture from Cray Research to partnering with Naintic for Pokemon Go.

Very nice, this is very useful for my college work. I have to admit, a lot of these are unknown in other sights. A couple of these, i have noted, were before recorded "first" type animations.
This series reminds me a lot of the old AMV (we're talking 2002 old) that did something similar about the history of anime. Sadly that person doesn't do AMVs anymore so there was never more than two parts made, and only the first one had a history lesson attached to it.
