STORYLINE:
The Israeli bombardment of a United Nations (UN) observation post in the southern Lebanese town of Khiam provoked a sharp exchange between the world body and Israel.
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said he was shocked by the "apparently deliberate targeting by Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) of a UN Observer post in southern Lebanon."
The Israeli Prime Minister Olmert called Annan on Wednesday to express his "deep regret" for the deaths of the UN observers.
One of the dead was identified as Chinese UN observer Du Zhaoyu, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported.
The other three UN observers were from Austria, Canada and Finland.
