I wish I had a teacher like you in high school. You’re very good at explaining things and you always do it in the simplest way.

So useful. 5 years at school no one taught me as simple could be to construct these kind of sentences 😮 mind blowing!

Mi è venuta in mente la frase della sigla di Friends: "So no one told you life was gonna be this way", è un future in the past, no?
Thank you for the lesson, Brian!

I'm starting to watch your videos again, don't know why i stopped. I'd really learn how to speak english without saying:" i'm sorry about my english". This is really useful.

Thank you so much Brian! 😃
About two years ago I used to say "I knew you would *HAVE* come" and I learnt the correct form when I listened to one of your old videos where you talked about it.
I'm glad to see that you made a whole video about the future in the past.
I knew you would do it. 😉

Great video!!! One question, if I want to use a "Future perfect" in the past, can I use the "would have + past participle", for example: "Before the policeman came in the house, the killer would have already gone" (Prima che il poliziotto entrasse in casa, l'assassino se n'era già andato) or "yesterday I said to everyone I was sure I would have reached the top by midday" (ieri ho detto a tutti che ero sicuro che avrei raggiunto la cima entro mezzogiorno) and "It's almost lunchtime, I thought I would have finished all my work by now!" (È quasi ora di pranzo, pensavo che avrei finito tutto il mio lavoro ormai!) ?
    Thank you very much!
    Michele

In effetti la vera difficoltà per un italiano è il dover tradurre con un condizionale presente ciò che si pronuncia al condizionale passato.

Bravissimo e simpaticissimo. But a small question ' I thought my sons would enjoy the camping' ' I thought my sons would have enjoyed the camping'' . I was told, many years ago, that they were both correct: the first had a positive meaning ( they enjoyed), the second a negative meaning (they didn't)....

Ma quando l'azione futura ha una forte connotazione ipotetica/irreale allora il would + have può essere usato no? Esempio: tutti pensavano che avrebbe potuto vincere lui (ma invece ha perso) > everyone thought he could have won

We study English as a second language. In our curriculum I faced this problem. We have this sentence to be changed into (Future in the Past).I'll show you the sentence and its solution:John will be working late, so I won't call him early in the morning.
    It is done as follows:-
I knew John would be working late, so I didn't call him early in the morning.
My question is:-why did they use"didn't"instead of"wouldn't" for the second part of the sentence? Please explain this for me sooner not later and if there is a rule write it down. I'll be so grateful. My best regards. I'm from Iraq.

Nice lesson. But I'd say the second version of future in the past (WERE/WAS GOING TO) is far more uncommon than the 1st one. ;)

When I met Astrid in New York , I had never thought , she would become my wife.
When I met Astrid in New York, I had never thought she was going to become my wife.
When I met Astrid in new York, I had never thought, she was gonna become my wife.
    Is that correct ?
