Pierogi Ruskie does not mean Russian Pierogies. It means Ruthenian (people that lived on the current territory of Ukraine). There was polish region called Ruś Halicka thats why its called Ruskie.

@@J.E.E Yes it's true. Western Ukraine was once a province of the Polish crown and was called Red Ruthenia (Eastern Galicia). Hence the name of the Russian dumplings. It should not be confused, as is often done, with Russia, where this type of dumplings is unknown. Formerly very popular among Poles living in Ruthenia (Ruthenian Voivodeship).

@@worldcitizen123 Well done, you were the closest, but it's worth getting to know the origin of the name Pierogi Ruskie. The dumplings themselves are a typical dish of eastern and far eastern cuisine, their dumplings are served by Georgians, Russians and Ukrainians, of course, under their national names. However, in Poland, "Ruskie Pierogi" gained their popularity and began to expand into the interior of the Republic of Poland from the former territories of the former Ruthenian Voivodeship, whose capital was Lviv. And just as we have herrings in Kołobrzeg or Kashubian from the names of the places and their popularity, with the remnants of the Ruskie Voivodeship, we have the popular dumplings there. I would also like to add that in the 20-30s the name "Ruskie Pierogi" was not used, but "hreczane", with meat, jam or cabbage was made "Pierogi Ruskie" were probably named after the period of 1945 in order to define what area they come from.
Ps. The present "Ruskie Pierogi" in the areas from which they migrated to the interior of the country were simply called "Pierogi z Kartoflami i Serem" and there was no fried onion in their composition, as is now being added to the inside.

@@margplsr3120 odpiszę tobie po polsku , żeby było bardziej jasno. Mogą je nazywać nawet chińskimi co nie znaczy, że piszą prawidłowo. To samo porównanie mogę zastosować odnośnie nazewnictwa dania typu kebap w Polsce, gdzie każdy bliskowschodni mieszkaniec próbując je i widząc padnie ze śmiechu.
Pierogi w Polsce przed 100 latami były popularne w rejonach południowo wschodnich i nazywane w przypadku omawianych pierogów Pierogami z serem i ziemniakami a nie ruskimi.

I feel obligated to explain one thing. This special type of dumplings is called "PIEROGI RUSKIE" just like "Russian dumplings" but they don`t come from the word Russia, but from the land of "Ruthenia" just like "Kievan Ruthenia" ... Ukraine today.. . And although they sound like Russian dumplings, but they are from Kievan Rus, so it is more correct to call them "Ukrainian" in the 21st century. Until now, Poles didn't pay attention to it, but in the context of what Russia and the bandit Putin are currently doing, Poles are radicalizing in every aspect to oppose evil ... They even change the name of the dumplings ... Remember in Polish "Ruś" comes from " Kievan Rus "generally hard to explain it to a Pole, and even more so to a British in a foreign language, um, but I hope I explained it a bit... So, Kievan Rus existed as a civilization, when in Moscow they lived in a bush in hats of shit ... That's true

I understand the feeling but it is how people call it after WW2. Sometime it gets me too when I see cultural appropriations but then I feel sorry for those who do it. Because it is sucks to be raised in the culture full of lies and bs. At the same time, I do like when there are tricky names like that. You get to find out later after trying the dish. There are many dishes like that. We all know French fries and Dijon mustard are not French. Also if you have to add the name of the region, that means the main recipe itself is not invited in Ukraine. Dumplings came from china via silk trade route. Dumpling arrived in Ukraine with Armenian and Greek immigrants. So take it easy. Educated people will always know that Ukraine is the Rus. Old Ukrainian language was called "Ruska mova". Ignorant people will always be around and no point to worry about them.

11:25 such markets in Krakow's dialect are called "kleparz" what literally means "clapped place", where the ground have been hardened (clapped) to allow more people to come and trade, especially trade living animals (it was an animal market since the pre-history untill 1920's) and now "kleparz" is the proper name of this area - "Kleparz" (with kapital K).
16:30 in general Polish 3 is "trzy" ("třy") but in Krakow we pronounce it "czszy" ("čšy").
20:20 in Krakow word "Ruskie" is a general term for Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, best translation is "Ruthenian". When we say "Russian" we say "rosyjskie".
