    It's hard to believe that he died so soon after this record...

    If there's anything that stands out regarding Gobbi's performances, it must be the ease with which he immerses himself in the character.

    His voice was still mostly fresh at 70, when at that age most lower voiced men would have gruff voices with wide vibratos. Incredible!

      I have read that if one is trained with proper vocal technique they can sing into their 70s.

      I had one of my acting teachers from the same generation of singers. He had a bigger voice at 84 than most of modern "basses" and "baritones". He used to say he didn't sing on stage anymore "Because it would be inappropriate and ugly, let the young singers have their time."

      @@svilendenchev9984 Very interesting. There is a video here on YT of a Russion vocalist, I believe a baritone or bass, singing an aria from Eugene Onegin on stage in his 90s! Perhaps he didn't sound like he was in his prime, but it was still quite good and the audience was in rapt attention and an air of deepest respect.

    This is probably Gobbi’s last public performance ( he had actually retired several years earlier) - if that is the case, how fitting that his final word is “Addio”. The power of both his voice and his personality are undimmed.

    Ah, Tito Gobbi! I love him in a whole bunch of villain, anti-villain, and anti-hero roles such as Iago, Scarpia, Renato, Jack Rance, Rigoletto, Amonasro, and Conte di Luna, thanks to his snarling and visceral way of singing and acting. Here in that excerpt of his singing of a bass aria, i.e., Colline's "Vecchia Zimarra", he demonstrates that a great technique lasts an entire lifetime.

      Yes! And if you listen closely, you’ll understand how he does it. No over-darkening, a relaxed low larynx without pushing it down with the root of the tongue, and no fear of sounding bright in the higher notes. This is how it’s done! 😍

    This is a bass area not a baritone aria but Gobbi sings it in a masterful way. By the way, Puccini rarely wrote arias for a bass. This actually might be the only one he wrote for bass in his Operas. Gobbi sings it fantastically well both vocally and expression-wise, and at that age! Incredible!

    • @goscinnydyrygent
      @goscinnydyrygent 10 месяцев назад +5

      Good observation - Gobbi had a faster vibrato, typical of the singers of earlier times like Pinza, Amato, Chaliapin - and those last much better than the slow vibratos that came into fashion only later.

    Colline bleibt immerhin der Smoking.....❤ich ehre ihn immer noch, meinen ersten und einzigartig-einmaligen Scarpia , wofür Gobbi das Modell geliefert hat ( Fioravanti klingt wie eine Gobbi-Kopie und das ist ein Konpliment, bitteschön).....Gobbi sprach auch Deutsch, ich erinnere mich an Ernst Stankowski Erkennen sie die Melodie, in einer Folge war Gobbi eingeladen, er rauchte eine Zigarette im Studio und plauderte mit Stankowski deutsch , ist aber lange her ....Übrigens singt Gobbi hier nicht im Bass, sondern transportiert und es ist auch Playback, ich möchte annehmen, dass die Aufnahme als solche von einer Schallpattenproduktion stammt, aber das soll keine Kritik sein, ich ehre ihn , meinen Tito Gobbi. Gobbis Bariton hatte übrigens Ende der 40ier Jahre eine beachtlich sichere Höhe , die aber später verloren ging .....Gobbi war kein mächtiger Verdi-Bariton im Sinne eines Bechi, Bastianini, Cappechi, aber er war und ist für mich immer DER Scarpia( Callas, Pippo), Rigoletto( Callas, Pippo), Jago( mit MDM live), Falstaff( Karajan 58)und vor allem einfach ein genialer Künstler, auf den der Begriff acting voice genuin passt......und er ist unvergesslich in einer unterschätzten Partitur, nämlich als Marcel in Il Tabarro......und dann noch ein Highlight , das ihm gehört : Gianni Schicchi❤
