The spring in the bottom of the tripod is so when you loosen the screw and it drops it cushions the hard stop at the bottom so it doesn't damage the equipment on the tripod. Mechanics don't think of such things, photographers do. haha
Great video and solution. “That was my entire childhood” hit home, I don’t know how many hours I spent holding a light for my dad. His constant refrain was “hold what you got”. Of course now that I think about it a lot of that time was when him was helping me fix my car so maybe things weren’t so bad.
Awesome! DeWalt also makes a tough system light. Stack 3 drawer boxes underneath with a home made dolly, and that would work pretty well in your set up. BUT.. definitely not as cheap and adjustable 😅
The new-ish DeWalt DCL077B light has a modern efficient LED with good color temperature. It even has a tripod mount. Highly recommended, I use it all the time.
The tool you were looking for is called a surgical exam light, essentially it's a LED light on a gooseneck with an adjustable pole and mobile base. While most come with a mains power connection for safety the actual light head is run on low voltage DC so you can easily modify it to run on a battery.
@@ZeroToAwesome it's gone through numerous iterations, but uses a flexible arm (think Casey Neistat tripod) with an LED panel at the end. The largest objection from a viewer of his videos has been the creeky noise it makes in the microphone when he adjusts it. Worth looking into for v2 of your solution. Great lighting system on your end either way - I really like that it holds both he camera and light source for you.

Mystery solved!
Came to say this, exactly right!

Thanks- going to see if I can get one on the black market since I didn’t go to med school
You always have good, well filmed videos.
Thanks!
It needs a feature to shine directly into your eyes.
Your father says it’s called “dad mode” when his kids do that…
