The thing is with explanatory design the qualitative phase is usually voluntary and so you can't really recruit specific participants unless they are also interested in being followed-up.
True, but if you have a relatively decent sample size for the Quant phase (which is probably the case if one decides to conduct an explanatory mixed methods study) and design the questionnaire so as to ask the participants if they would mind being potentially recruited for a follow up, chances are, statistically, that you will get enough for your qual phase. Of course this does not have to happen, but is likely nevertheless
Sir, Any research paper/thesis based on qualitative research wherein qualitative part is achieved by analysis of interviews supported by literature review and then followed by questionnaire (quantitative)
Thank you, Dr. Kriukow, I have two questions: 1. as pragmatist, I conducted an exploratory sequential design starting with a qualitative study (new topic to the area), and I did not develop a questionnaire from the qualitative study.. I used an already validated tool (from other researcher).. Is this the wrong way?? . My second question: If I got contradictory results between qualitative and quantitative how can I approach my discussion.. Appreciate your advice!
what you described does not fit what is typically referred to as exploratory design, but probably a convergent or concurrent design, since you have essentially qual and quant phases and methods separately, which will later need to be integrated in the analysis. The second question is probably too long to answer here, but there is nothing wrong with such outcome and you should comment on these differences and reflect on them in the discussion

Hello dr kriukow! Thanks for this insightful video! I have a question on mixing data in sequential exploratory. Is it necessary to mix data after quanti analysis and even when I have already used the quali results to shape the instrument used in the quanti? My adviser insists I do so but it doesnt make sense to me since I have already mixed in the quanti phase. She wants me to compare quali and quanti results at the end. Is this appropriate?
yes, it is. You should compare them at the end

what test of analyse do I need to use to test my quantitative data for generalisation (when using exploratory )
So basically, for the exploratory sequential design, we just start by analyzing the qualitative data separatley then the findings are used to help design the questionnaire for the quantitative phase. Then the findings of both phases are merged together right?
the data/data analysis is not merged togehter, you want to analyze the quantitative data separately. But I suppose you can say that the findings are "merged" in a sense that you want to first discuss the qual findings, then the quant, but then you want to discuss them together in light of your research questions
Assuming the two sets of data cover the same topics, I would always suggest merging the results in the final write-up of the study, as each will add information and quality to the other - integration is key to a mixed methods study.

You can definitely use this but I am not sure whether this would be the actual data or just some additional information about your sample. Not much I can say without the context

If I am using questionnaires and document analysis for data collection which design should I go for and what data analysis should I go for ?
this will depend on what you want to achieve by mixing the methods. There is no other rule, just this one - you need to be clear what exactly is the purpose of each method. Regarding the analysis, again the approach may differ, you may for example do content analysis for the documents and thematic analysis for the open ended questionnaire items, but these are just examples

@@tsireledzoramakokovhu5651 this also depends on your goal. If you collect the Quant data first, the qualitative data is to help explain the quant results. If you collect the Qual data first, the results of the analysis are used to design the Quant tool. I have a few videos on this channel about these designs
