To all you people that I can't directly reply to, the reason they didn't die because of the bacteria was because the only reason the bacteria was killing them was because they had no time to alter the atmosphere to their liking.
There is a small irony that Wells was correct about Mars' losing the ability to sustain life long before earth (although I doubt he actually appreciated just HOW long before at the time), but for entirely the wrong reason. Nuclear fusion was an unknown process in the late eighteen hundreds/early nineteen hundreds and most people assumed young stars were massive and bright like Betelgeuse and that very old ones were small dwarf stars like Barnard's star. They believed a star shrank and cooled as it aged and burned up its fuel and that the sun doing this had rendered Mars too cold for life, out there at around the 2AU point. Utterly wrong of course. In two billion years time the sun will be a LOT hotter than it is now and earth will have been smoked to death around a billion years before that, with all the oceans evaporating into space and all life gone. But what did cool was the much smaller Martian planetary core, which ended protection of the atmosphere from a magnetic field, which meant the atmosphere got blasted into space by the solar wind. Result: Mars lost all surface temperature it once had, water can't be a liquid on the surface and there's bugger all to breath.
And this is why I don't think Terraforming will not work. The Solar wind would strip away the atmosphere. And no one has given me a good means of protecting the atmosphere via artificial means.
Well, that is the only reason that they did it. They thought they were a higher supreme race, which they are, but they didnt wAnt to they needed to. They would die other wise.
tigerhunter77 Actually, if we were in their shoes, we would have invaded. Just look at human history. +Bob John This story is told from a first person point of view. For as far as we know, the Martians were invading the entire planet.
You know I get the feeling that wells is saying that we will become the Martians. Think about. One day we may destroy the planet and be forced to move to another, while massacring it's original inhabitants.
Fredfredbug4 I am EXTREMELY late, but the book actually confirms what you say. The book claims that the Martians may have came from some human like ancestors that grew more intelligent to the point it became more greedy and cold where they eventually evolved into giant brains (the Martians).

But those humans who disliked this video would have been humans who thought super skilful powers could *not* help to save the planet when in reality super skilful powers could mean immediate overkill against the Martians because the Martians would be the ones getting overkilled.
Damir Babic They were desperate for their survival. even if they felt pity of mankind their desparation made them override those feelings. They may see us as we see insects, most of us don't feel bad for killing them.

How would they have any way of knowing humans are "intelligent, sapient life" any more then a human can feel pity for a wolf protecting her cub during the Yellowstone wolf genocide? Even humans require a entire childhood of training just to feel pity for other human life, and I don't see a Victorian professor going to Mars to teach them human lives matter. You certainly don't see anyone trying to arrest you for swatting a fly that only wanted to bite your neck, that is basically their perspective of a human angry that a capsule landed on its house. As for executing their own leader he could easily have been someone who pitied humans too much to take necessary action, thus deemed a soft weak extremist who don't have what it takes to serve the people rather then a forest set before bulldozers. This is the same reaction you can expect to see in democratic Athens during tribal Greece.
Damir Babic: Well martians are supposed to be opposite of humans in way, like they follow logic and no mercy and scientific advancement (and maybe blood lust, we don't know completely) rather than emotions and feelings. so they can do things that MOST not all but most humans couldn't (note: I would totally do this.).

@TwilitLightning Actually, in the book it was explained that since Mars is smaller and further from he sun than Earth it cooled quicker, thus life was able to start sooner and the martians are so much more advanced than us, BUT this also means their planet's core went out and it died that much faster.

After wiping out the english the martian could then just finish the flyers they were reported to build in their main base, and launch repeated blacksmoke bombing runs on the capitols of the world, without fear of counter attacks.
