Ginebra's rebuilding started in late 1991 after SMC acquired Ginebra from the Palancas. After that majority of the players part of that 1991 championship were traded. Ginebra focused on getting big names in the amateur league like Noli Locsin, Bal David, and Marlou Aquino who will be an important part of that champion team of Gordon's Gin in the 1997 Commissioners Cup.
