- Join us as we spend a week Family Camping in the rain in Cornwall. This time we had a new air tent to protect us from the Cornish elements - And boy did we need it.
The Cornish weather and the Navigation provided by Google maps was almost enough to send Scott over the edge! In fact, we can honestly say, neither can be trusted when in that part of the UK.
We never knew what to wear and half the time never knew where we were going, so Scott had plenty to moan about.
Even before we started Scott's blood pressure started rising when he saw the amount of equipment we had to pack - the new tent was huge and the extra bits we had bought did not help matters, oh and this time we had a dog!
But somehow, we managed to get all the equipment, tent dog and kids into the car and trailer.
Day 1 and the start of the May Half term. We got up at 5:30am, Scott checked the weather and forecast said it would start raining at 12pm that day and pretty much continue right the way through the week..Arhh.
Living IN Swindon, we knew we would need to set off early We set off at 6am as we wanted to give ourselves plenty of time to get there. (With a clear drive it is 3.5 hours) We had a trailer, it was start of the May half term (so we expected traffic), and we a dog that required a wee stop every so often. This resulted in the actual journey being approx. 4.5 hours and at 11am we had arrived at the Globe Vale Holiday Park - and wow, it was still not raining.
The new tent and its pitching gave Scott some grey hairs - A review of our new Vango Ventanas Air Tent and our demonstration on how NOT to pitch it can watched here - • Vango Ventanas II Air ...
Apparently, it can be pitched in 12 minutes! But took us 90 minutes!
But... the rain did hold off till we were able to pitch it and so once it was done, we felt settled in and it was time that we could relax.
Globe Vale holiday park is situated near Redruth, just off the A30, and is centrally located to a lot of great beaches and the ideal base camp. Well, this is the case when it is sunny, but when it is raining, it means you are close to a lot of wet and windy beaches.
So..what can you do in Cornwall in the rain? That was the dilemma we had.
Well, we videoed our week and all our adventures and this showed how we got on, whinging and all.
Things we did during our week.
- We visited St Michaels Mount, well Marizion Beach. A beautiful beach to see in the sun and of course you can also visit the island when the tide is out and see the historic castle. For our visit though it was wet and having a pasty on the beach was adventurous as we got.
- We visited about 5 car parks in St Ives - Yes that is correct. St Ives even in the mist and the fog was rammed, with every car park being full. So, if you want to go the town of St Ives, go early!
- Then there are the other beaches near Globe Vale that our kids loved, especially when the tide was out. Porthtowan, and Portreath. Both great surf beaches and as mentioned when the tide is out they are great for crabbing, paddling, dog walking etc. And worth noting that both have great little pubs close to them.
- You have Perranporth, which Scott, the kids and I all love. The beach is vast when the tide is out and it also has the Watering Hole Pub on it, which is a lovely place to have a drink - when its dry! And the little town has everything you need, including plenty of parking spaces - Take note St Ives!
- We also visited Holywell Beach. This place turned out to be a godsend. It has a little stream running to the sea and huge sand dunes that the kids loved shooting down on their body boards. So even if the sea is too cold, they will love that - and it has a good little pub and plenty of car parking
- Praa Sands. This was our only real time of being able to use the wetsuits and body boards. It does have great waves here, with us all enjoying the opportunity to have a go in the surf. It too has plenty of parking and a good little pub.
- Then as an additional treat, we took our kids to Slip and Slide near Newquay. A 350ft water slide. Myself and the kids loved this (Scott was on dog duty). It cost in the region of £40 for 3 of us for an hour. But definitely worth it, even though it was really windy.
Believe it or not, with the exception of my grumpy husband Scott moaning on a frequent basis, we actually did enjoy ourselves and hopefully this video will assure others that no matter what the weather, you can have great times and make fantastic memories when camping in the rain or in bad weather.

The main thing is that you went on holiday & spent time together as a family, despite the neverending rain (which I actually love) & stressy stuff. You'll look back on it all in years to come & absolutely treasure this time!..🤗
Hi, you are very true.Scott may moan a bit, but as soon as October comes, he will be booking our next camping trip..rain or shine, we love our camping adventures...
Just love you're wife's positive attitude. You would be lost without her mate ,she is definitely a keeper. Great video, glad you got time to enjoy you're family. Take care 🙂
Hi, lol. Thank you so much for your comment. Scott does not have much to do with the comments etc but I will ensure he knows about yours😁😄
It must be like heaven going on holiday with Scott 😂
Lol, it's entertaining if nothing else😆
What a great video, and such a lovely family, glad the sun came out for you on day 8. Look forward to next year's video,
Hi, thank you so much for the comment. Hopefully next year's will be titles 'Family Camping in the Sun' but with UK whether it is doubtful🤔
Great video..Scott never fails to entertain with his moaning😆
Glad you enjoyed it
You are a cracking family and me thinks Dads bark is worse than his bite 😂😂😂
Hi, hi you are correct, With Scott there is no bite just a low ignored growl😆 he is more entertaining than anything else, and despite his moans we do love him..
So funny. Reminds me of camping with our kids when they were young. Soaked through many times but great memories
Thank you so much for the comment. We try and do at least a weeks camping each year. Each time when there, Scott says never again, then come October he is booking up the next camping trip😆 he loves it really..
@@TheHadwinsTV next time you go to Cornwall park at st erth station and use the train into st ives. Dog friendly and a beautiful scenic ride. No parking hassle.
The very best holiday video really really enjoyed it ,beautiful family.
Hi, thank you so much for the comment and glad you enjoyed it..
Thanks for a brilliant video l had a smile on my face from start to finish. We used to go camping and it's the best holiday rain or shine Happy Days
Thank you for the comment and glad you enjoyed it👍
You know when you go on holiday and it's so stressful but you think everyone else is having an amazing time, then you find out they aren't 😂
Lol, hopefully we give confidence to every one else out there stuck in a field in the rain, in the knowledge that...it's never that great, but funnily enough the memories always seem to be and before you know it you cannot wait to go back..
Scott = victor meldrew 😂
Oh love it..lol, I won't tell him though, he would moan about it 😆😆
Haha, does Scott ever stop "bloody" moaning.
"I do not belive it!"😡😕....😂....🌫🌪🌧🌧🌧🌦🌧
Rain, shine, wind, you guys had so much fun and looked like you thoroughly enjoyed yourself.
Hi, yes, lol we try, and we have Scott's moaning to keep us entertained😆
Great video, we've just come back from a week camping in globe vale based on your recommendations. We had a great time, and will Def go back.
Scotts moaning is great entertainment!
Hi, so glad you liked Globe Vale, it is in a great location, and lol, glad you don't mind Scott's moaning..
Still watching the videos...don't worry about the weather...making memories is key, looks like you had a good time 😉
Hi, yes we made some great memories as well as give Scott some grey hairs..think he loves it really though..
Well it certainly looked fun despite the awful weather I'm sure the kids will have fab memories too ❤
Hi, we loved it, Scott not so much..but that is what made it entertaining to us..he is our very own Victor Meldrew😆
So funny; I laughed so much but great video and I feel for you with the rain and weather but very entertaining.
Hi, thank you so much for your comment and glad you enjoyed it, lol, more than Scott did. We do have a knack of picking horrific weeks in the UK...expect to see episode 3 next year🙄
Hi guys, first vlog of yours I've seen. Fab vlog, just subscribed. Rain or shine, making family memories ❤
Thanks so much! 😊 Glad you enjoyed it..
New sub here, hubby and I have really enjoyed watching this. What a great family you are
Hi, thank you so much for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video..👍
What a lovely family and video. 💙
Thank you so much!
Lol, good video again. Love watching your camping exploits and Scott's reactions. Keep them coming👍
Hi, thank you for the comment, and glad you like the video.
I like a bit of camping rain - better than it being too hot.
Hi, lol, I think Scott prefers the heat, especially in Cornwall as him and kids love the beaches. But secretly I think he enjoys the rain so he has something to moan about😄
I really enjoyed your vlog. We always use the park and ride for St Ives, saves the hassle of looking for parking . 😀
Hi, thank you for the comment and tip ref park & ride. I have told Scott to make a note for our next trip there👍
Brilliant video, remember those camping holidays well!! Love the humour!😂
Hi and thank you so much for the kind comment. Glad you enjoyed it👍
Never get board watching your video "moaning through the clip a bittersweet 😂😂
Hi, lol, I think everyone enjoys it except Scott, but he does keep us entertained..
Scot is so funny .Great videos thankyou
Thank you for the comment, glad you liked the videos..👍
Lovely cornish summer weather
Hi, lol, I think it may just be that Scott is a rain magnet😆
I've never heard someone moan so much about rain on holiday 😂
Hi, I tried to capture all of Scott's moaning to make it entertaining for everyone👍
Years ago, we were on holiday in Perranporth & the entire country was having a heat wave. Meanwhile, we were sat on a beach draped in a sea mist day after day. The only way to escape it was driving south, along with everyone else so long traffic jams. I feel your pain
Lol, Cornwall does seem to have its own climate. Each day completely different and never what it's supposed to be. And the roads are such a joy to drive down, still it kept Scott amused😁
Lovely, lovely video.
Thank you very much!
New subscriber...Smile on my face from start to finish, Such an enjoyable vid, Much needed, Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!😁👍
Hi Janice & Scott an enjoyable video , shame about the weather but still lots to do in Cornwall, we always park in the trenwith long stay car park in st Ives , even in busy times they have the overflow and we have always managed to park even after lunch . 😊
Hi, lol, I just told Scott and he said "pants, wish we knew that before we went". Still we are going down to Cornwall next year and have made a note thank you👍
It was always rained when putting up the tent and again when time to pack it away to come home. It always amazed me hiw much you have to pack.
Hi, we were fortunate this time with the weather when pitching and packing, but the UK weather does keep you on your toes. Packing away in the rain would have ruined us though as the tent is way to big to dry out in out garden, so unsure what we will do if this happens in the future?
Watched the full video with my family...Lovely family, lovely video ...Thanks
Thank you for your comment and glad you enjoyed it..👍
the great cornish wheather its like it all the time but would never move away from here
Hi, we don't blame you, Scott loves Cornwall, as do the kids and myself. Lol, each day is a surprise, raincoats or suncream, you never know...
When we visited St Ives, we struggled for parking too. We found one just short of a 20 minute walk from the centre which also had a bus service running. It was the rugby club parking, £7 all day parking, loads of space. Hope this helps for future or anyone planning on going to St Ives😊
Hi, thanks for letting us know. A few people have also mentioned getting the train from St Erth, so we have a couple of options now👍
I feel your pain. Just back from Tenby after the late bank holiday...60mph winds and rain. Almost worse when the sun does peek out from time to time 🙂
Hi, lol, you have to love the British weather, even worse on the coasts. When it's good, it's great, when you go camping though,it never is🙄
Brilliant video and I've seen hundreds, top class
Hi, thank you so much for the comment. We never know whether people would ever be interested in our escapades. Scott has now built up a bit of a following for being the real life Victor Meldrew, unsure whether it is good or bad, but all thumbs ups and comments like this do make us very chuffed...
PS - I think you made the best of it; some goods times out and thank you for the video which showed some lovely places; I didn't realise that tents were so large
Hi, thank you for the comment. And Scott didn't realise how big the tent was until I had ordered it...he was surprised, especially with its weight...
Great blog thanks for making us chuckle! 😂
Hi, thank you for the comment, and glad you enjoyed it..it is an epic, mostly for our memories, but thought we would share...
Squirrel 😂 that was so funny!
Lol, yes squirrel and rabbit chasing is her favorite pastime..chasing, but running away if they stop😆
Great vlog, as always, was funny too. Stay safe, looking forward to more vlogs.
Hi and thank you so much for the comment, glad you liked it..
Great Video, that pain of packing everything is stressful but fun at the same time, nothing ever goes in how it did before. We took the plunge and changed to a caravan in may so much less stress and a lot comfier, but we will always have a soft spot for tent camping. Keep making the memories mate before the kids are to old.
Hi, lol, you are so correct with the stress putting it away, took us about 90 minutes.
Scott has been looking at a caravan, we are moving house next year and pending the drive size or area we have I.e we can store at home I think we will be buying one..but until then camping it is, as the kids love it (even if Scott is not so keen)😁
If I threw the ball for our spaniel both the ball and the dog wouldn’t come back lol
Lol, it must be a spaniel thing...😆
every year we went on holiday didnt matter where it would rain and be windy and cold so your not alone lol one year we had a hurrican can you believe it another year we had good weather but the kids got chicken pox two weeks stuck in the caravan unbelievable really feel for you just enjoy your time together thats the main thing
Hi, wow, sounds like we got off light with just having rain. Weather in UK cannot be trusted, but at least it gives Scott something to moan about😄
Watching from wales 🏴enjoyed you video ..what a lovely happy family you are ☺️
Hi, thank you so much for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video..
12° ??? That's flipping cold, it's ALL about making memories
Hi, yes, great memories and colds😆
We've been back from Cornwall staying near Perranporth just over a week now after two weeks away. We had the winds blowing pretty much every day but only really rained on a night. We were in a caravan but we had an air awning with two sleeping pods and the wind one night was really, really bad. Luckily the awning stood up to it. Never been on a holiday with the wind blowing every day even when it was sunny !! We went to the well know Fistral beach in Newquay and the lifeguards had stopped all swimming, paddling, surfboarding due to the bad winds the night before causing the waves to be quite 'lively'.
Hi, we love Perranporth, and all of Cornwall, but when it's windy, it really does dampen the experience, lol, Scott will vouch for that. We are going back next year though, hoping the sun will come out. And we love Fistril beach, but we found it a bit of a nightmare to park..but we are going in May next year, so hopefully it won't be as busy...
We had the same problem with parking and found a side street where a hotel was charging a fair price for using their overflow car park. All the family loaded up with beach stuff, surf boards etc and we couldn't use any of it as Fistral was closed to swimmers etc. There only so many sandcastles teenagers will make before getting bored 😂.
The best thing to do re St Ives is to park in St Erth’s train station and get the train to St Ives. Beautiful journey and only costed us £13 return, plus parking (family of three). Takes the stress out of finding a car parking space in St Ives. Lisa
Hi and thank you for your comment. A few people have told us about the train from St Erth. We are going back next year, and will definitely be doing that👍
Feel your pain loading up and we are just two adults and one dog. Oh and we have small van! We’re off camping today. Just two nights as we have new air tent that we haven’t used yet. So this is just a practice trip and quite local.
Hi, glad people can relate. And hope your test run goes OK, hopefully tent is great and plenty of happy camping memories can be made in the future👍
I feel your pain, when yet another bag you didn’t expect appears
Hi, lol, I always find more stuff to pack for Scott. He loves it really😆
Glad you found the sun in the end 😀Hope you'll find the sun in the start next year!
Hi, lol, yes we had to find the sun in the end. Like Wales last year, always makes an appearance right at the end...sure we will time it right one year??
@@TheHadwinsTV If not, there's always a tunnel to the riviera 😉😂 But hey, you guys are resilient and always makes the most of it no matter the conditions! 😊
Keep safe guys god bless your way
Great video. If you twist the storm straps they no longer sound like a helicopter lol
Lol, but it does work😆
Such a good advert for not going camping 😂
Lol, you should see Scott putting up and down the tents if you think this is bad😆
@@TheHadwinsTV😂 feel free to make a short edit of just Scott doing that
Every year I come back to tell you to camp in France. ❤We are off to the Dordogne with our tent
Hi, we are really interested in doing this in France👍 can you do a vlog for us so we can see what we can expect? Scott is keen because weather should be good, but concerned about the travelling time...
Hi, we are really interested in doing this in France👍 can you do a vlog for us so we can see what we can expect? Scott is keen because weather should be good, but concerned about the travelling time...
@@TheHadwinsTV I don’t do vlogs but check out ‘family camping Europe’ she has loads!!
Enjoy pa Rin kahit maulan.nakabawi naman
I’m crying 😂 I do exactly the same 🤣😂😜
Hi, lol, so glad is it just not us. Scott says we are the UK version of the Lampoon's, but I do think surely not...🙄
weve just cut short a trip to wales after we had full day n night of heavy rain with more forecast we packed up n came home, our tent couldnt handle much more itvwas leaking in underneath. we got back home to fine weather with sun forecast for 2 days so drove 40 mins upto the peak district to spend the last bit of our hol up there. woke up next norming to thick fog and everything inside our tent was wet 😅 . it hasnt been a very good yr for camping
Oh lol, we had that last year in Wales, actually every August in the UK when we go camping the rain makes a constant and relentless appearance..I tell Scott that it is character building, but he just scowls😆
I really look forward to your camping expeditions. I've taken away some good tips from you too, starting with the Yawn airbed which is how I discovered your vlog and now including the grill plate and the foldaway firepit. I recall Janice said that you were going to Menorca again this year? Given your luck with the weather, I sincerely hope you weren't there last week! Roll out the Mateus!!
Hi, glad you enjoy our blogs, and lol, yes in Menorca last week🙄 but came for 11 nights, so have had a few warm days. Still it gave Scott something to moan about😆
@TheHadwinsTV oh no! Well I hope it didn't affect your holiday too much. We are in Cala en forcat in early September so hopefully all will be OK by then. We love Scott's commentary. It's not moaning....it's good old dry humour and sarcasm. It's a skill acquired over many years. 😂
This cracked me up!!! Isnt the rain, wind and overall non-picutre perfect life the point of uk family holidays???
Hi, Well the rain for all of our trips seems to ensure it is. Ironically the summer this year appears to be have been good for camping. Typical as Scott booked a holiday abroad...always next year though🤞
You going to have to rename him moaning Mary lol
Lol, I totally agree and will have fun reading your comment to him😆
The Watering Hole ❤❤❤❤
Poor treath lol 😂 That’s how you pronounce it!! X
Lol, noted👍
Plenty to do in Cotnwall on the rain just plan prior to ur visit...
Hi, yes, we are going next year and this time will be prepared..never trust UK weather is something we have learned now🙄
LOL, does he know how funny he is? I think you should audio record him when he get's going people will think he's a stand up comedian. Well the weather wasn't that great for your holiday but the video was very entertaining, can we have lots more please.
Hi, lol...Think Scott will be grey if we make too many of them..
Like to say bloody a lot jeez lighten up man ! 😂😂
Lol, I could not put the other words he said on video..😆
10 hour drive for me mate from Cumbria to st Ives 😂
Lol, Told what you said, he said "dread to think how peed off you will be when you get there and can't find a parking space"😆
Iv been doing research on what type of caravan i can have. Yours will be perfect. Im just getting my finance sort and ill be back 😅
Lol
Hi guys great vlog😅 hot tip for st ives parking in future for st.ives just catch the short train trip from st erth station its a lovely little picturesque journey kids will love it
Hi, funnily enough as soon as we had got back to the campsite the owner told us this too. Lol, Scott wasn't impressed, but we are going back next year and it is on our to do list now👍
Never thought I’d see the day where I find someone more negative than me 😂😂.
Hi , I do try and capture Scott in his best light😆 he had a great fun a majority of the time, but that wouldn't be entertaining. .
@@TheHadwinsTV Ha ha I’m sure. My Mantra in life is that Pessimists are never disappointed ! 😉
Haha. This made me laugh, sorry about the weather, sounds like our previous camping trips. We've just had a week in Devon that was glorious weather (staying in a holiday home) but my sat nav kept sending me down silly lanes full of potholes in my 17 year old vw passat.....it wasn't happy 🙄😄
Hi, lol, we had night.ares with the Sat Nav from Google. And we can relate as we had the same experience in Devon earlier in the year too. Still, it gave us some giggles just listening to Scott moan about it..
Devon and Cornwall are known for the narrow lanes. You can’t avoid them.
This campsite is around the corner from me! ❤
You are really lucky, it is a beautiful part of the country..
Thank you, there are lots of hidden gems of Cornwall that you guys have not visited yet!
I thoroughly enjoy watching you and your family learn and grow as campers. We are too! We are camping in south Devon this weekend 🙌 fingers crossed for the weather! 🌞
If no spaces in St Ives go to the park and ride at St Erth. Either take the train in, which is really scenic, or get the bus. The rugby club offer their car park, and so does St Ives school.
Hi, a couple of people have told us about the train from St Erths now. Lol, wish we had known before we went this year. But have it noted now for next year👍
Hi , can I ask where did you get your black table and chairs from ...if you have the link please send it over ....many thanks
Hi, we got ours from GoOutdoors, but think they can be found in a few places now.. www.gooutdoors.co.uk/15903718/vango-dornoch-table-and-chairs-set-15903718
Time to get a caravan 😂
Lol, that is what Scott keeps saying, but secretly the rest of us just enjoy his moaning😆
I know your weather was awful but I really enjoyed your video
Hi, thank you for the comment and glad you liked it👍
We got back from Saundersfoot Wales today, guess what….. it rained. Fun tho 👍
Hi, yes the UK weather is so unpredictable. We are off to Spain now though for a couple of weeks, and even Scott doesn't moan about the weather there..well he shouldnt🙄
@@TheHadwinsTV good for you guys. We are due for 30 degrees in Wilts next week…… shock.
Godbless more videos pa Bisan English maminaw rajud mi😅
Victor Meldrew...canvas edition.
Lol, love this comment, don't think Scott will though, but I will make sure to tell him😄
I'm exactly the same when I have got all the gear together...this last trip we just said bugger this and took 2 cars 😂
😄
U should have bought a caravan lol
Lol, I am not telling Scott you said that as that is what he keeps telling me..🫣
Gru😂😂😂
Excited na here maminaw sa English 😅
Nakatug ko 😅nahuman Naman diay
Waiting
Wheres Amy's bucket, spade and flags. Just seen spade near end
All ticked away in the car, Scott got bored carrying them.
Typical, but Amy should carry lol@@TheHadwinsTV
Hi iv found that Mablethorpe/ Skegness has the best weather . In summer hardly rains and and is fairly sunny in the the 20/21 mainly and lots of nice beaches.
Hi and thanks for the comment, we will put that on our radar now. We normally look to book up around October to December time and I will tell Scott to look at Parks in that area👍
@@TheHadwinsTV It a really lovely place it was my first time going this year. No rain at all even now when looking in the weather app.
Dam I missed the start.
You can rewind to start
I could not holiday with you, poor kids .. you are so negative. Lighten up !
Hi, you are only seeing the one side of Scott in this. We wouldn't have him any other way as he I'd always funny even when down and myself and the kids love him. But it is each to there own. .
Galing 1 hr video .nice editing Janice Hadwin
I'd rather stay home.
Hi, I would say Scott would too, but he loves these holidays really...I think, lol🤔
Hahaha
Your moaning would drive me mad. If you didn’t have the dog you could have visited Dairyland, Paradise park, Newquay aquarium, Newquay zoo, The National Marine Centre in Falmouth. St Ives is a popular place for tourists so locals park at Lelant and get the train in. It’s not expensive and a beautiful trip in. There is also the Discovery centre at Landsend.
Hi, lol, Scott's moaning is quite entertaining a lot of the time, keeps us amused. But yes, we did find having a dog certainly restricts a lot of what you can do. We are thinking of going again next year and may have a friend look after the dig,in which case we will certainly look to visit these places you have suggested👍
Just get a caravan, all that wasted time pitching up esp in the rain.... no beds, chairs, table, fridge, cooker etc etc....add food n humans.Tick it off your bucket list , let it be more enjoyable esp for your children, in the blink of an eye they grow up.Oh and a toilet n shower ......make it enjoyable not a battle/endurance test x x x
Hi, caravan is on the cards for next year. We are moving house soon, and having a drive bigger enough for that and the cars is a must have. Although the kids love the camping, and laughing at their dad😁
Still gotta put up the awning & all the clobber !!! 😂
Was this your first time camping? I'd have dropped you off mate. Nightmare.
Hi, lol, just everything we go for a week camping it makes a point of raining for Scott. I just film the memories to remind him of the fun time he had😆
Typical women
