Because if you're not a literal professional, they really are just toys.

The r/frugal joke goes is so funny because I finished high school a few years after the global financial crisis and had to write economics papers about how a major contributing factor to the crisis was consumer confidence i.e. how much people are willing to spend on consumer goods and we're at GFC levels now, it still causes inflation because the CEOs see waning profits and say well I see an easy solution here and simply raise the price.
People saying no to people in Britain doing Latin are wrong. It's not overly common but you can choose it at a fair amount of schools and it's often mandatory at private schools. There's actually a big political fallout just now as the labour government want to remove it from grammar schools (public schools that you need to test to get into)
