I gifted these to myself for my birthday last year, and I really do like them. I still very much struggle with gouache, but there's something about these paints that just made them easier for me to use. Some big RUclipsrs who use the high end tube paints really diss these, but I think it's like comparing apples to oranges. They're just different, and you use them differently. For what they are, I think they're great. Also, people angst about cross-contamination, but I don't even worry about that, because I pretty much always mix paints anyway. And if, for example, you get too much other color into your yellow, you can just brush it clean. I've already used up the white tube that came with it and am on a second white tube, so that shows how much I've used it!

No one should expect a studio grade paint to perform like a professional grade paint. I rely on my beloved Holbein gouache when I need professional results. For me, this set expands my gouache to being able to conveniently paint with gouache en plein air, so hooray! And for print making, professional grade gouache isn’t necessary - this is a money-saver in that way! (I’m always wiping off my yellow pans😂👩🏻🎨🩷)
I have Caran D'Ache's school gouache pans, which are different than their studio gouache pans but look almost exactly the same (there is some cute decoration on the tin and the colors are slightly different options (they say it has 13 pans but its 12 cakes + white tube and 2 empty pans). They look very similar, but the colors are slightly different. When asked what the difference between "school" and "studio," Caran D'Ache said "Thank you for your interest of our product gouache in pans. The difference between gouache pans Studio and school line is the concentration of the pigments. In the studio line, the recipes are more concentrated in pigment also the lightfastness will be the same or even better. Moreover, you will find the colours 030- orange and 120- violet only in the school line and not in the studio range."
Thanks for making this. I have had that Caran ache gouache pan for some years, tried it when i got it and couldn’t figure it out, also wasn’t familiar with gouache then either. After watching this i pulling it back out and used it, what fun.

This is a great set, love it too. What most don't realise though is that with gouache pans, they are supposed to be used with the white to become full gouache, that's why there's a lot of hate on this.
Hi Dieter! Thanks for watching and commenting! I agree-this is a great set! They are not, however, intended for professional use. These are part of the Caran d’Ache Hobbies Collection. Adding the white from the tube to a color while mixing is always an option to bring these student-grade paints into the pastel range. From Caran d’Ache: “No matter the form (cakes or tubes) the paint is already “gouache”. The white is in tube instead of cake to be able to mix in a clean way.” For professional gouache, I recommend Holbein. Have fun painting this week & Happy Holidays!
Considering how transparent most of the colors appear on the swatches, couldn't the same effect be achieved with regular watercolor pans plus a tube of white gouache? I typically only use watercolor mixed with gouache to fix parts of sketches, but this pan set has me wondering if it might work as an actual technique.

Whenever white gouache is mixed with translucent watercolor, it will take away that translucency & turn the pigment into an opaque or semi-opaque medium. If that is the effect you would like to achieve, then that’s great! There’s nothing wrong with doing that, just keep in mind that it will take away the translucency of the watercolor. Whenever I teach my students how to correct mistakes in watercolor, I encourage them to use the lifting off technique. With good quality 100% cotton watercolor paper it’s very easy to do, unless you’re using a staining pigment and don’t catch it early enough😩 I hope that helps! But that wasn't what I was asking about, so let me clarify. I was under the impression that gouache uses a more opaque selection of pigments. But looking at this pan set, it seems like the pigments are the same ones we'd find in a watercolor set? So if the main difference between watercolor and gouache is that gouache is mixed with titanium white, my frugal self is wondering: why buy gouache pans at all if we could achieve the same results with watercolor pans and a tube of titanium white gouache? (And maybe mars black.) It never occurred to me until I've seen your video to make a full painting mixing watercolor with white gouache to build from dark to lights. And I know I could answer my own question if I just tried it, and I will tonight 😄 so I can report back. In the meantime, I wanted to see if anyone else had experience with this.
@@NelaDunato thanks for your clarification😃 Opacity does not make a paint gouache, nor does adding Titanium White to watercolor make it a gouache. Mixing titanium white (PW4) with watercolor will definitely change the color value of the watercolor and move it to the pastel range. There’s nothing wrong with doing that, it just wouldn’t be gouache. There are many varieties of professional gouache that are transparent. Some are semi-transparent, some are semi-opaque, and some are opaque. Not all gouache paints add Titanium White; in fact, many are single pigment or a mix of other pigments. I have other videos where I review Arteza Goiache & Holbein professional gouache, and in those videos you will be able to see the pigment information and opacities. This is a really thorough analysis. And your painting demonstration became a wonderful work of art. 🤩 It's so nice to see some appreciation for this cool set of paints.
So glad these paints get some love ❤. I've had a set since the 90s, and they are still going strong. Granted, I dint use them every day. The oaints are still pigmented and strong. I like that you can use them as watercolour or add white and make them more opaque. The white tube is probably zinc rather than titanium, so it doesn't change the colour much. I find the colours mix very well. I use these as underpainting for soft pastels, and they work great! Thanks for your review.

You can the the inner tin out you kinda just have to bend in where the indents are to get it out with a bit finagling, mine came relatively easily again out since i have taken it out once before since the wire that held the lid came out once
Quite interesting, those are the kind of paints kids use in German schools (probably also in Swiss schools), we usually buy Faber-Castell (the Faber Castell Connector are in the form of fancy puzzle pieces) or Lamy or Pelikan (they all are pretty decent quality and also quite cheap - under 10 bucks per 12 set). I have also seen artists who use them. Would be cool to see a comparison of those brands to Caran D'Ache which are pretty much more expensive. They usually come in 12 or 24 sets and contain a tube of white (you can buy the pans and the tube separately, the tubes also come in bigger sizes).

The German word for them is "Deckfarbkasten". There are also cheaper ones made by Staedtler, Eberhard Faber or Herlitz. I have searched for a comparison video in German, because anyone with kids has at least a couple of boxes at home, but nope, no luck.

The quality is as good in Fancolor as in the Gouache Studio. But Fancolor is beeing discontinued and only the Gouache Studio will remain.

Faber-Castell makes quite nice children’s art supplies, and I have been buying this set since my oldest was about 2 years old. (I actually love the large and reconfigurable pans and the whole palette set up and save them when each set is used up… I may refill with other paint at some point.) It bears some resemblance to gouache in pan form, as it is definitely more opaque than regular watercolor paint, even though it is called watercolor. I also comes with a tube of Chinese White. I have even done my own DIY lightfast test, out of curiosity, with swatches in a very bright south-facing window for about 6 months, with no noticeable color change. But, they are kind of chalky/gritty/streaky, although I will say that they (as well as F-C’s beeswax crayons) appear to have changed during the pandemic and I think they used to be higher-quality. Still, I would expect to see a significant difference between them and this Caran d’Ache studio gouache set. I’ve recently ordered the gouache set and it should arrive in a few days and I look forward to trying them and comparing them to the Connector Set.

My set just arrived…that inner pan does come out😁 first remove the white part that’s holding the paint pans. Then gently squeeze the 2 long sides toward each other..i then used a letter opener between the side of the silver tray & the red container. It came out nicely.
Hi Marie! I think it’s best feature is it allows you to use student-grade gouache conveniently while traveling or en plein air! So for sketchbooks, yes! A very nice set!👩🏻🎨

I’ve never heard of the Fancolor set so I did some research, and it looks to be that perhaps the Fancolor set is distributed in other countries, and is labeled as Tempera paint instead of gouache. This would, in my opinion, make the two sets identical. Tempera Paint (or Poster Paint) is a chalky, semi-opaque paint used in schools & by hobbyists in the US. That would fit with my assessment of the Caran d’Ache 15 pan Studio Gouache set. Their written descriptions are nearly identical. The set I reviewed drys like gouache in that it is matte, however not chalky. I will write the company and see if there is any real specific difference, however, at first glance, they appear to be the same with the exception of the logo font and sleeve image. I’ve received an answer from Caran d’Ache: One belongs to the Classic lines (Gouache Studio) and the other to the discovery line (Fancolor) to attract different targets. The quality is as good in Fancolor as in the Gouache Studio. But Fancolor is beeing discontinued and only the Gouache Studio will remain.

These are not sized conventionally. They would fit in a watercolor tin if you took out the insert that holds the conventional pans and used magnetic tape pieces on the bottom of the Caran d’Ache pans. I think there would be enough room to fit all of them in there if you used a tin for 48 half pans, for example. Maybe you could put a few that you like in a tin sized for 12 conventional full pans and then switch them out as needed. In fact, that would be very easy to do if you put magnet strips on the bottom of the Caran d’Ache pans. If the pans are too tall, you could remove the hinge pin that holds the fold-out mixing area (on a conventional palette) and go from there. You’ll have to play with the configuration & see what works best for your needs. I hope that makes sense 👩🏻🎨🩷

@@artonthecreek In doing my “research” into this set, I saw someone in a video take the pans out of the plastic insert, and then put them back in the same tin. This created a lot of additional space and she was able to add some better brushes (stored under the lid) and some other things I no longer quite remember - I think it was some tubes of gouache from another brand, but possibly also some supplemental watercolor pans. I don’t think I would ever have thought to take the pans out, either. It made for a great kit.
The bottom tin does come out. There are little indents in the pan and you have to kind of squeeze the pan inward where the indents are and lift up. Hope that makes sense. But, if you remove the inner pan, the box won't stay closed. Oh, and I didn't get a purple with mine. They put a gray in instead. I'd rather have purple. 🫤

The quality is as good in Fancolor as in the Gouache Studio. But Fancolor is beeing discontinued and only the Gouache Studio will remain.

@@artonthecreek Just a few flurries this morning. I haven't picked up a brush in over a year (work gets in the way of my art) but I went a little crazy with the black friday deals and bought lots of new brushes! I'm just excited to see a local artist - it can be a little isolating.

Would the pans perhaps fit in a watercolor case made for full pans? or are they too big for that?
These are not sized conventionally. They would fit in a watercolor tin if you took out the insert that holds the conventional pans and used magnetic tape pieces on the bottom of the Caran d’Ache pans.
I think there would be enough room to fit all of them in there if you used a tin for 48 half pans, for example.
Maybe you could put a few that you like in a tin sized for 12 conventional full pans and then switch them out as needed. In fact, that would be very easy to do if you put magnet strips on the bottom of the Caran d’Ache pans.
If the pans are too tall, you could remove the hinge pin that holds the fold-out mixing area (on a conventional palette) and go from there. You’ll have to play with the configuration & see what works best for your needs.

@@artonthecreek In doing my “research” into this set, I saw someone in a video take the pans out of the plastic insert, and then put them back in the same tin. This created a lot of additional space and she was able to add some better brushes (stored under the lid) and some other things I no longer quite remember - I think it was some tubes of gouache from another brand, but possibly also some supplemental watercolor pans. I don’t think I would ever have thought to take the pans out, either. It made for a great kit.

The bottom tin does come out. There are little indents in the pan and you have to kind of squeeze the pan inward where the indents are and lift up. Hope that makes sense. But, if you remove the inner pan, the box won't stay closed.
Oh, and I didn't get a purple with mine. They put a gray in instead. I'd rather have purple. 🫤

I noticed that the pans I have in my set don’t coincide 100% with the ones featured on the sleeve🤔 I don’t have that light blue.
If you really want to you might be able to purchase the purple separately and just swap them out. 💜🩶 Thanks for watching and commenting and I’m so happy you like your gouache set!
