  • In this video, I turned off the power and water for 24 hours in the middle of the Texas Arctic Freeze. We didn’t use our generator or our Delta Pro. We did this to demonstrate how well my Pre-Winter Storm Power Outage Checklist works. Basically, I am walking the talk!

    Fantastic - thanks for a great video and test. During snowmageddon 2021, we shared all kinds of stuff with our neighbors and then during snowmageddon 2023, no one had done anything in between.

    Great video. Thank you for putting this together. Very simple, practical and doable for anyone. Love, Love, love the checklist idea. Just as another idea for you: put a bag of rice in a long sock. While the heater is on, place the rice sock near by. The rice will soak up the heat. Put the rice sock in your bed, near your feet before bedtime to pre-heat your bed. This feels soo good and allows your body to retain heat rather than using it to heat up the bed.

    Excellent video!! I have many of the things you mention in the video. A couple of things I don’t have is the Wave Heater (even though I have two Big Buddy Heaters) and the shower. After watching your video I want to add those two things to my preps. Thank you again for sharing this impressive practice power outage!! ❤

    In FEB 2021, we were without grid power for 17 days. Thankfully, we had hybrid solar, 60Kwh batteries, and a 22KW generator with a 1,000 gallon propane tank. We had no ssues.

    We had similar checklist but we use a Chinese diesel heater setup thousand square foot house heated it no power no water Southern gallons diesel 7 days basically a gallon a day on diesel to keep it at a nice 71° with negative wind chill factors in the negative15 daytime temps at 9° you don't get any fumes you do have to have a decent battery I have a 200 amp hour ampere time keep it running 24/7 just adjusted output temperature

    Really great video, love the detail. Really curious why you’re putting water in the back of the toilet to flush. Can you cut that amount in half by bypassing the tank and pouring a pitcher of water directly into the bowl?

    • @LoneStarPrepping
      @LoneStarPrepping  5 месяцев назад +1

      Some people do it that way. I don't. I dont have to use that much water if I dont want. We had plenty of water. I find my way cleans out the bowl better. If you just put water in the bowl when there is no flowing water to the toilet and the tank is empty, it doesnt flush. If you just put water in the bowl, it wont flush. You have to dump the water high enough over the bowl to aggetate the water enough to drain out and in the meantime, you just splashed dirty toilet water all over the place... no thanks...

    Great experiment! Thanks for taking us along. How cold was your room after sleeping all night without a heater on? Is it the risk of CO/ decreased O2 that prevented you from using it?...I'd reccomend upgrading your gas fireplace. I did my own experiment and mine will keep my 1st floor in the upper 60s, with outside temps in the low 20s outside even in my old house. Thanks again for you video. I'm going to look at that heater and the shower.

      Thanks for your comment. I have no idea how cold it was in bedroom when I woke up. I was focussed on getting the livingroom heat going. The bedroom was cold, but would have been worse without insalated windows and blackout curtains. I turned the living room one back on about 1am and the bedroom a couple hours later. We had plenty of blankets and thermals etc...

    Northern Arizona: I have a Midland Weather Radio and the reception is really poor. Can you recommend an external antenna and what might be a better brand? I live on the edge of town with surrounding mountains likely complicating the reception. Thank you. Love your channel!

    I would added a thermal fan on top of buddyheater..I use it and it spreads heat faster and better..thats the ONLY thing I saw that would make it better through out the whole video,,,,

    Did the wave 8 heater really keep your whole house at 72 or just the room it was in?

    • @LoneStarPrepping
      @LoneStarPrepping  5 месяцев назад

      It kept mainly the living room, dining area and kitchen warm. Together that was over 500 square feet and basically the same area. Our room is usually VERY cold. The window insulation helped keep it warmer that I would have expected. Without the window bubble wrap, I have my doubts it would have stayed as warm as it did.

    Serious Question here.
    With the Olympian wave 8 heater,
    Do you really smell nothing?
    Any down sides to having it?
    I’m interested because I have a few little heater buddies and they all smell to my wife and I.
    After enough time with her buddy we feel a bit nauseous.

    • @LoneStarPrepping

      ruclips.net/video/y9C2le0moDI/видео.html
      Only downside is it is heavier, not as portable, you have to use the tank and hose, and you have to keep the cover on it when not in use because the dust will kill the pad on it, and it costs a lot more than Mr Heater, but we smell nothing.

      Well done experiment y'all have performed.
      Thanks.
      I have 12 volt batteries with cigarette type outlets and USB charger ports and to run our radios .
      I have a 12 volt electric blanket, available on Amazon of course, but truck stops have many 12 volt appliances.
      The little blanket can keep my wife warm on the couch.
      Our propane just about froze in the Texas cold snap, and would barely light,
      Now we have a rocket stove.
      Our diesel genset wouldn't start since it has no preheater, I was able to heat the intake manifold with a barely burning propane torch and if finely started.
      Also, starter battery was frozen, so I had to jump it off our tractor. Now we have a lithium jump starter..
      Draining pipes works better than dripping for us. Before restoring water to the house, check the pipes, as if cracked, you may not realize it until pressurized with water.
      I like your portable shower, good idea.
      Like you, I too have a good wife who helps , especially when it gets rough, she pulled a 100 foot well pipe in the freeze so I could reattach the pump, and she helped me pull the septic pump out, a very unpleasant job, but she just washed the stuff off and kept on going.
