Thanks for posting. My parents hometown. I went to school here a couple of different times. Visited regularly during the 1980s. The history of the place is as interesting as any in Scotland. Hope it eventually rebounds.
Thank you for your comment mate. I love Scotland, bloody great place. Nice people on the whole, lots of history, beautiful scenery, best fish and chips in the world and oozing with charm. Stuff money cannot buy. Cheers
@@FoodTravelwithJames Definitely something very special about the place and the people. I started life in England, like you, presumably, though in my case in the south (Kent). Always enjoyed going to Scotland, and will be there in a few weeks, as it happens. Nothing against the South, but the people of Britain seem to get warmer and more outwardly friendly as you go north.
I'm from Airdrie and, bad as Airdrie town centre is, Dumbarton looks even worse. Was going to get off train for a wee visit but not so sure now! The train station makes up for it though!!!
Work near there in the 90s, lots of changes. Last visited in 2018.Thank you but I wish it was in business hours so I can see which shops are actually still in business.
Jesus. This does not look like the Dumbarton I remember when visiting when I was young. My Mum was born there (and worked for Ballantyne's for a bit). I am not sure if I should show her this, but I probably will.
You need to be across the water looking at the Rock and you’ll see what looks like a semi-submerged elephant. If you get the right view, it’s pretty clear. I’ve tried to make a video: I’ll link it at the bottom. Just hope it works… There’s been some renovation in the town of late. I left maybe 3 years ago, but despite all its flaws my heart pours with joy when ever I see the town, hear of our very extensive history or my beloved wee fitba tesm Dumbarton has so much potential to be amazing. So close to Glasgow, so close to Lomond & Trossachs National park, so close to Loch and Ben Lomond, one of the (if not the) oldest settled spot in Britain, the first castle, the Rock so famous it’s mentioned in the Irish Chronicles, Norse Sagas and by several Roman historians. It’s a great wee toon that should be an amazing place to live Fingers crossed
Agreed mate, love Dumbarton and to be fair, Scotland in general. I will look out for the elephant next time l go to Greenock. Cheers for your comment.👍
I’ve made this short sorta video thing that I hope shows what I mean I dunno if links work? Why Dumbarton Rock is said to look like an elephant ruclips.net/video/khlPK8hRd0o/видео.html Loved the vid, btw. New subscriber for sure
The fortress is a strong point, and elephants are a symbol of strength, hence the elephant was chosen for the coat of arms (granted 1673, used since 1357). The motto gives the clue: "Fortitudo et Fidelitas" - strength and loyalty. Note the castle on the back of the elephant.
Amazing to think that in 1357 Dumbarton had already been a royal burgh for well over a century. And of course it had been the center of a Cumbrian kingdom for many centuries before that, and was probably fortified in Roman times and even earlier. Dumbarton has incredible history. It's the neighborhood were Robert the Bruce spent his retirement. His lodge at "Cardross" is documented, though that probably referred to a place in the Vale of Leven as opposed to the modern place between Dumbarton and Helensburgh.
The history of the place is amazing. On another note, l spoke to a fella from Dumbarton about six months ago. He told me that you were not a true son or daughter of the rock if you were born in the local hospital...you had to be born in a house in the town, to be that. Great story.
@@FoodTravelwithJames Well, that's an interesting criterion! My dad was born in Dumbarton, but I'm not sure which building! My mother grew up in Dumbarton but was born in Glasgow. Her mum is from Dumbarton, her dad from the Vale of Leven. My eldest sibling was also born in Dumbarton, at Overtoun House, a mansion built in the Scottish baronial style that was converted to a maternity hospital. I live in Vancouver, Washington, and I once got a haircut at a place I didn't usually go. The hairdresser was also born in Overtoun House. Small world. Where are you from?
Wow, it is a small world indeed! Great story about your haircut 😂 I was born in Preston, Lancashire but lived in a few places in the UK. I have family from Greenock, just across the river from Dumbarton. The UK in general has seen better days and a little rough around the edges, but still love the place. Cheers mate.
Yes. The river side is cleared up and the Leven looks like a bonny river. The new buildings and area around the centre are a ghastly mish mash of concrete and glass used because it is cheap. And nasty. It should be pulled down and started again with designs using indigenous granite and sandstone that unfortunately have been chucked away for this rubbish. Sorry, a shock to see my old town reduced to such a characterless chimera. Grand video though. Many thanks. Rmb4*
I agree but despite the crappy shopping centre, Dumbarton still has a faded charm that money cannot buy. The castle and rock really are something special....genuinely one of my fav places! Cheers for your comment.👍
That isn’t the smoothest of filming. If you can buy a gimbal , you’ll glide through the place. Boring narrating SORRY SOME PEOPLE MAY ENJOY IT! I worked on that street not so long ago and you didn’t do it any justice. I think if you put some thought and work at it, you could do this. You’ve done better than myself there is no way I’d have the guts to walk around the centre filming with phone or a camera. It takes guts learn a little more about our area or any area and have some kind of script with facts , stories and history. Know your product - so to say! Boring video gbut don’t give up , you can do anything you put your mind to!! I’ll look out for you in the future, and I’ll give you a like for your content and please don’t take this as malice but a little push in the right direction. Have a script and also know the history and take us all on a smooth tour ! Maybe throw a few jokes here and there…. Xxx ☺️

I was born and raised in Dumbarton and can remember when it was a bustling town. It’s like a ghost town now. Sad to see how desolate it is now.
Same as many places in Scotland and the rest of the UK. I do like Dumbarton though, has heart and soul....something money cannot buy.
What is Dumbarton like to live? I’m English my partner is from Glasgow. We currently live in England but considering moving up there.
Not sure mate. If anyone can help?

Moved away in 1979, best move I ever made. Place looks a shadow of it's former self :-(
Thanks for the upload though mate :)
It's certainly run down mate but still has loads of charm....love the Rock and Castle especially.🏴 Cheers.
@@FoodTravelwithJames Sorry yes I was referring to the shopping centre mainly. :-)

Ah yes! I can see it now. Great clip mate. Cheers.
The inlet is an outlet of the river Leven into the Clyde.
