- It has been a year since the issue of "pretendianism" reached a national and international fervor within academic institutions, with the University of Saskatchewan at the centre. After the events of the last year, we have seen many different initiatives created, often so quickly that we have not had a chance to really think about the impacts that pretendianism has had on students, community, and those in the academy who have often had to do the hard work of bringing these issues to light, often with little support. In this roundtable discussion, Métis and First Nations women impacted by pretendianism share their perspectives. This discussion was recorded live on December 2, 2022 at the University of Saskatchewan campus, and livestreamed to Facebook. Hosted by the Saskatchewan NEIHR network, funded by CIHR (skneihr.ca).
Moderator: Dr. Robert Henry, PhD, Executive Director, nātawihowin and mamawiikikayaahk Research, Training and Mentorship Networks (Saskatchewan NEIHR), Assistant Professor, Indigenous Studies, University of Saskatchewan, citizen, Métis Nation-Saskatchewan
Opening and Closing Comments: Terri Hansen-Gardiner, knowledge keeper in residence, Saskatchewan NEIHR; citizen, Métis Nation-Saskatchewan
Roundtable participants:
-Jamie LaFleur, BA(Hons) in anthropology, Masters student in Community Health and Epidemiology, University of Saskatchewan; Research Assistant with Dr. Heather Foulds, Kinesiology; member, Lac La Ronge Indian Band, Saskatchewan
-Dr. Winona Wheeler, PhD, associate professor, Indigenous Studies; organizer, Indigenous Women’s Collective, member of Fisher River Cree Nation, Manitoba
-Tracey Robinson, organizer, Indigenous Women’s Collective; member, Ahtakakoop Cree Nation, Saskatchewan
-Dr. Caroline Tait, PhD, medical anthropologist and outgoing professor in psychiatry, University of Saskatchewan; incoming professor of Social Work, University of Calgary; Founding Principal Investigator, Saskatchewan NEIHR; Nominated Principal Investigator, NEIHR National Coordinating Centre; citizen, Métis Nation-Saskatchewan
Being a Pretendian is one manifestation of whatever George Santos' problem is - deep dissatisfaction with one's actual true identity, be that from shame, trauma, etc. Where it becomes a problem and a crime is when people profit from pretending to be someone they're not, and when they rob others of opportunities and benefits that don't rightfully belong to them.
We're all native Americans... except the mexicans.
That prayer 2 Jesus at the end made me sadder than anything discussed prior... Give the yt man back their gods!
chi miigwetch for this conversation i left academia decades ago because of homophobia , my local university finally had a problematic professor retire last year, and now i might entertain finishing my visual art degree
First, thank you to the 5 presenters, you all make me proud to be First Nation . Humility and wisdom are very important attributes, I must say that you all wear it well. Take care and Naas be with you. ❤
This was superb, the panelists so sophisticated intellectually and so clearly real First Nations people.
Lol...
I wish my only accomplishment was the failing of my ancestors to defend my ppl.
Pathetic
The institutions are run by liberalism and woke thinking. Think this through, always go back 3 steps. Don’t look at the now- and wonder why? Go back 3 steps and you will find the real problem. Nobody wants to believe that government and power are the problem, but it is! I am an 81 year old Metis man.. hold 2 citizenship cards- one from Manitoba, because thats where all my ancestors are from red river- but i live in ontario now so i have an m.n.o card.. the m.n.o is being vilified as well. We have one of the best registry there is- we just got rid of 5000 people that could not prove, by documentation that they are recognized under section 31. I have worked most of my adult life to protect all people who are truly indigenous.. these women are spot on- and i hope they don’t get beat down to the point that they give up. There is a new push that the powers that be will do nothing to protect the rights and the honour of all indigenous people of turtle island- keep up the good work ladies, i am very proud of your strength and tenacity.. love you all.
All these women are foreigners (european).
blame colonialism
Kia ora koutou, an important event, one we can all learn from...
Filipinos also have to have uncomfortable conversations. So many, all over our planet.
Thank you for your perseverance. Angers me when "politicians" get involved.
In the US federally recognized tribes have a T.E.R.O. (Tribal Enrollment Rights Officer) who fights for the rights of tribal members to get the first rights of job opportunities, others tribal get second opportunity, and spouses of tribal members are third choice. These frauds should have never have passed to even interview. Please look into this, we have our rights and we should never be over looked and thus who are not rightly indigenous should not be given the chance above you. Your ancestors struggles should not be in vain.
There is a huge pretendian problem in US academia as well. This position is not saving us.
Hi thanks as soon has I heard her say talk to like we're little kids that is check one I know what it like to be back flash it like being back stabed too not kidding you good luck 🤞 to everyone in this video
Pretendians talking about $5 Indians is wild 😂
I’m having trouble wrapping my head around this issue. Can someone explain why this is different than the “trans” movement. If a man can be a trans-woman, why can’t an European-American be trans-native-American? Reality is now optional. If a biological male can claim a different gender and compete against biological females, why can’t an Irish American apply for and receive a scholarship for indigenous peoples? It’s the same thing.
chris you cant see the difference because you hold the view that the two genders are different creatures instead of genders :3 come back when you stop saying outlandish shit like "compete against biological females" and quit your transphobic sperging on nonrelated native videos!! ps trans men exist too shocker of all shockers
The woman on the right dont "look" Native
The man narrating this entire thing looks white lmao
I think they are fake as well.
Pretendians clomplaining about....say it aint so 🤦🏾♀️
All the woman and men are white but talking about pretendians 😂😂
Exactly, if their identity is so important why they mixed and continue mixing with whites, if it isn't literal assimilation then what is. If I would be native I wouldn't accept even 1/4 natives as native. If you are less than half you shouldn't act like a native.
@@sectorgovernorthats what the genocide is genius. nice mental gymnastics
@sectorgovernor I am basically Portuguese but am also descended from several indigenous peoples around the world, so I probably have as much indigenous DNA as they have. They would consider me a settler and shut me out. Sad.
@sr2291 because you are. You have no built indigineous roots, family, anything. You are not native
As a woman wit a Siberian lineage, I've always noticed that pow wow outfits are loaded with European baubles, and this is called native tradition. They are wearing our ribbons, shawls, and metal bits. Yet I get harassed from natives if I take my drum out. I had one tell me "I know your people, and they don't have drums..."
Interestingly she was dressed like a British man, hat and all. I would love to see real traditional outfits from natives. Anyone intelligent knows there never were any looms or bead factories in the Canadian bush.
Drums come from every culture. Its a female rite of passage for representing heartbeat, which natives allowed their own men to steal , and turn into a huge behemoth drum.
The stories I could tell...of how natives pretend Shamanistic rites only stem from their culture. TRUTH is... ALL earth tribes were pretty similar until forced colonization. Now its just war mongering nonsense.
does it not strike you that your insitution is entirely racist............as is the discussion topic...what would be the motivation for an impostor?........all that free native money?
