Your sewing machine might also not like bobbins from another brand, i bought a set of pre threaded colorful bobbins snd I couldn’t figure out why the stitches weren’t coming out perfect until someone suggested that. Took me weeks of trying things like rethreading those cheap bobbins with gutterman thread but nothing helped until I bought bobbins from the same brand as my machine 😅
Thank you so much for this video! I've been sewing off and on for more than 55 years. I always have to ask a ton of questions about the type and size needle to use. And don't get me started on thread! Thank you again for answering all of my "I'm too embarrassed to ask at the shop" questions!😊
I was just on a podcast with Lisa from Farmhouse on Boone a month ago, and that was the first time in 55 years of sewing that I’ve heard that threads can tangle from threading the machine incorrectly. I also spoke about how you need to hold the threads at the beginning of stitching. I hadn’t seen anyone else talk about it until now, and I’m so glad we are getting this information out. So many people stop sewing because of just this one thing! Also, it’s really important to keep your machine oiled as that can help your machine run properly. You can do that yourselves by following your machine manual. I have never had trouble using cheap or old thread, so i agree that it probably has to do with the brand of machine you use. I like Gutterman thread as well!
I gave up on my machine because the thread wouldn't stop breaking, even after having it serviced. I'm pretty sure I was using cotton thread because it was cheapest and I thought cotton would be best. This video could have quite possibly saved my sewing! Thank you!
Great info,I too only buy Guitterman thread.I always tell people to check threading first and the bobbin is wound smoothly, turn the machine off and on to re calibrate.Check under the bobbin for tangled or loose threads, and check tension.
Hi. Thanks for sharing these handy hints and tips. I remember getting stuck on a few of these problems when I first started and knowing about these basic things back then would have saved mye so much frustration. 😊
Thank you so much! I've just starting sewing with a machine this weekend and your videos are so helpful! Silly question, but how do we determine light, medium and heavyweight fabrics from one another to determine what needle should be used? I'd love if you could put this on your fabric guide! I know there's lots of obvious ones (ie denim is obviously heavy), but just determining at what point we should change would be helpful!
I am a beginner in sewing and recently my new machine was bunching up the thread on the bottom and stopping for days. I was in tears. After a week or so of watching the videos I realised I was not lifting up the foot lever while threading. I was in such anxiety as I had saved up for a year to get my preferred sewing machine.
Thanks for these beginner series of videos. Very helpful! Silly question, do you have to contact Brother/Singer for a sewing machine mechanic or are there people who specialise in machines (that don’t work for machine makers)?
Sadly there are less and less sewing machine specialists these days… but hopefully you should have a sewing machine technician near you. Just google ‘sewing machine servicing’ or ‘sewing machine repairer’ and your location. My closest specialist is about an hour away from me, and is getting pretty old so not sure what I’m going to do when he retires ☹️
Great info, unfortunately not gonna help to solve my issue. The thread constantly breaks, but I've already established that the problem is clearly not with the thread.
I learn at my fabric shop about the polyester thread (I had a cotton thread which was always breaking so I asked) but I didn't know that there was different type of... needles. Feeling like an idiot because it seems perfectly logical.

Oh I wish I remembered to include this! That’s such an important one!

You’re so welcome! I’m still learning new things all the time too. Glad you found this video helpful 🧡
I've been sewing for 20 years now, and step six still gets me! Thanks so much for another great video.

Ooh great tip about oiling your machine! Thank you for sharing 🧡
😅
Oh my goodness I've just finished a practice project and got caught up on so many of these mistakes, this video is so helpful!
The tension is the thing I haven’t ever touched. So thank you
Can't wait for more videos on this playlist! I really would love to see slow tutorials of using the machine to sew
I had no idea I was supposed to hold the treads! 😮 Thank you!
Yay I’m glad you learnt something from this vid! 😄
Hi janelle! Thanks for sharing your great tips with us!
Do you think you could made a video or explain more about the bobbin tension too?
Great tips Janelle 🤔 It's a good reminder that sometimes the simplest things can make such a difference.. 😊
Super helpful! I've been sewing for a while but never knew about holding the threads to begin, and the difference in needle types! Thanks Janelle 💕💖

Excellent beginner friendly tips! Like you, I love Schmetz needles and Gütermann threads.
I wish I watched this video when I first started sewing, such great advice for beginners!!!
So glad I found your video. Was in bobbin mode haha Such a simple fix and was about to scrap the whole project for another day. Thank you!
Ahh I’m so glad I was able to help!!

Oh me too! Hopefully watching this will help others to not go through the same frustrations 😊
Omg, this was SO helpful!! Thank you so much. Am definitely tabbing this one to refer back to when I encounter problems ❤

I'm loving this series!
Aw thanks! So glad you’re enjoying it x

Oh no! It’s so daunting at first when things go wrong and you can no clue why 😭 Good on you for figuring it out though and not giving up!
Thank you for this very informative video Janelle xxx
That is a very useful video, thank you!❤
So helpful! My machine has been collecting dust because I was so frustrated by simply not understanding these basics. Time to get it in motion!
Yay I’m so glad you found this helpful! x
Learned a lot from this video, thanks 😊
Good reminder even for people who have been sewing for year's
Great tips, i liked the needle info, very useful! ❤
I've been pretty lucky with my basic Elna. Hubby is a diesel mechanic by trade and services/cleans/repairs my sewing machine when needed
Thanks you very much 😊
Thank you for sharing 😊🧵🪡🤗🤩
lol, that first one was among the first things I learned as I've begun sewing.

I love the last tip. Haha. I've been sewing for years, and I'm still shocked everytime I accidentally leave the machine in bobin mode.

Is your sewing machines tension too tight?
My spool of thread on top of the machine bounces around a lot, and it drives me crazy. Anyone have any tips on how to stop that?
2:41 oh hell no the money???

Haha you’re not an idiot at all! How are you supposed to just know these things?! Glad to hear this video has taught you something new though 😄
