    I agree with your ideals Mel. I also got 5 more ideas of my own.
    1. Multiple CBDS
    Brisbane has a really bad problem where most of the business, corporations and high density living is crammed into one area. This means it is very hard for people to live near work and places like Queen Street Mall and makes all of the high density apartments unaffordable for the average person. So I think Brisbane should start spreading out some more and creating new CBDs. Having a CBD in places like Chermside, Wollongabba, Logan, Ipswich, Cleveland, etc. Having more than one place for high density livings, office buildings, skyscrapers, etc. Not necessarily being as massive as Brisbanes CBD, but spreading it out some more so our options are not so limited on where we can have businesses and skyscrapers.
    2. Highspeed Rail
    Highspeed Rail has been a complicated topic in Australian history, mostly due to its major distances. However Brisbane and South East Queensland could greatly benefit from this. Making such a massive region seem so much smaller. Imagine Highspeed trains going from Brisbane to the Gold Coast, Toowomba and Sunshine Coast in mere minutes, compared to a few hour train/car ride. As well as connecting parts of Brisbane along the way, and over time it could further extend out to places like Sydney.
    3. Mixing houses, apartments and businesses more
    We should start creating mixed used neighbourhoods, a major issue of Brisbane is this stuff is usually separated and can take too long to get to, as well as making people too reliant on cars and public transport; public transport is good but you shouldn't be required to take it just to get a coffee. It also helps make neighborhoods more efficient, more densely populated, generate more tax and overall quality of each street. Instead of just having lifeless streets for the most part that only exist so people can leave them. Streets can be places to go to, enjoy, shop, etc.
    4. Removal of Stroads
    Roads will always be necessary in Brisbane, not just for cars but for trucks, military and other vehicles. High capacity, high speed roads to funnel traffic in and out of the city. Unfortunately, Australia is really bad at building roads and often ends up Stroads. A unholy mixture of both roads and streets, littered with exits, traffic lights and driveways. Making traffic flow through them very slowly, very unfriendly to trucks and just extremely dangerous. I think the existing stroads should be turned into smaller streets with apartments & shops going up them, as long as having BRT or Trams go across them. Making them population corridors in a sense. Then we should replace them proper roads, like more tunnels. Not only getting rid of those horrid eyesores like Gympie Road, as well as creating a more efficient road network.
    5. Reorganizing the councils
    Why are there 5 councils in one city? I think it should be reorganized into more of a borough system like what New York has. It is unnecessary to having so many governments in just one city, makes everything disconnected & disorganized, and really badly damages any future plans for Brisbane as it has to go through 5 separate councils to just get it approved if it is city wide.

    Love these ideas…I would love to see more on bypassing the river city expressway. Also you talk about the metro extension. But it only services the eastern suburbs and some inner city suburbs we need something for the western suburbs as it is the fast growing corridor in Brisbane. Any thoughts for the west?

      Western Brisbane is hard. The UQ Senate forced the government to agree not to extend the busway beyond St Lucia station, and any busway branching put from the city through Toowong and Indooroopilly would be in direct competition with the train-line. What would be most ideal is if all the buses freed up by the metro project are moved to the Western suburbs and that bus lanes get painted between Mt Ommaney and Indooroopilly along the Centenary Motorway to help funnel those suburbs without train access to the train-lines or the city through efficient buses. At the end of the day I think it really comes down to the Mt Ommaney area having very little public transport that has to change.

      I think Metro will be rolled out further, I’d love to see it connect to all major shopping centres as well. Mt Ommaney makes sense too, need to get people out of cars.

      @@melpikos8533 while western Brisbane is difficult, they need to just spend the money and upgrade the m5 western freeway properly including a proper busway all the way from the tunnel portal to the Ipswich motorway. It could have links to portal exits to Westfield Indooroopilly and my Immanuel shops. It would also fit very nicely and close to the Darra train station as an interchange then. There is also then potential to link a busway to west which aligns to the freeway out to Ipswich.

    I'm sold on all but number 5. Diverting the Riverside express way would cut a vital free connection through the city.
    Buying back the Clem 7 and Go Between bridge would not only be prohibitively expensive, but would met major resistance from private interests, only further escalting the price.
    If the expressway was limited to one lane and each direction and the remaineding space was utilised to create a proper light rail extending southwards through Greenslopes to Mount Gravatt and Northwards through Everton Park to Castledine. These would greatly reduce car trips and finally active Brisbane's CBD.
    Additionally some heavy rail could utilise the corridor, tunneling under the city at the William Jolly Bridge and connec to the mainline at Roma street, adding additional capacity.
    Lastly two stations could be created, one near QUT and the other closer to William Jolly Bridge. These could be light rail stations, but could also house large end of trip facilities to encourage greater participation of active transport within the city.
    This would need to be coupled with better covered connection, so that the last leg of the journey protects commuters from the sun and the rain, which is really lacking presently.

      Why have the Tunnel stop there, when you can extend it southward to link with the Ipswich Motorway at Archerfield to ease traffic on Ipswich Road. In addition, also extended the Road Tunnel Northward from the ICB to Alderley, where it can then run along the NWTC to Carseldine and through Connect with Gympie Arterial Road & the Bruce Highway onto Moreton Bay Region.
      This would crush a lot of the traffic on the congested Northside Roads. I present to you, the M8, Brisbanes new Motorway.

      Brisbane has NOT built a TOLL LESS bridge crossing of the river for FORTY YEARS. Consider that. Meanwhile we have built 10 under utilized green bridges

    Ranking of the ideas: 4 2 1 5 3. 3, another stadium by the Gabba is perhaps most controversial in the sense that demand for it is less clear. Would welcome to hear more about 5, diverting the Riverside Expressway, which would make the river there more aesthetically pleasing but what is the business case for the high cost.

      Thanks Frank - we could always look at demolishing the original Gabba post Olympics. At the very least, AFL and Cricket (and other events) could continue uninterrupted. At this stage, we've yet to come up with a sensible alternative until then. I'd also love to do a more detailed breakdown on Riverside Expressway.

    Hi Mel love them all as always. The green bridge to bring high capacity to Hamilton is needed. The diverted riverside expressway is perfect then you could only toll the cars exiting into the city tunnels. There has always been talk or a tax to enter the CBD. You would also need a flyover after the go between bridge and fix hale street all the way up to hill to kelvin grove road with all the Criss cross merging. I don’t think motorists should pay a toll to go that way as the riverside expresssway is currently a free road and GBB would need toll dropped. A left fly over entrance to coro drive would be needed. As well as a tunnel portal entrance from the east before the Olympic stadium as that area is a nightmare and traffic needs to go underneath Stanley / vulture streets for this to be a real solution. This would also allow the connection to the west under west end, across to the m5 at Toowong. Of course another tunnel portal feeding to the western freeway wouldn’t work unless the m5 is upgraded properly. All the way to Darra and the Ipswich motorway including a proper busway network next to the freeway allowing Indooroopilly and mt Immanuel to have bus stations / or off-ramps to link to them, to allow better connections. Darra train station could also link as a bus station / rail interchange. The duplication of the centenary bridge is only half of the solution and it needs at least a 6 lane motorway there with busway to be up to minimum 2020’s standards.

      Why stop the new tunnel there when it could continue eastward from the Pacific highway and clem7 to link up to the port of Brisbane Motorway and then it could also be extended northwest from the ICB all the way to the northwest transport corridor and then out into Moreton bay

    You need to look at the bigger picture on Riverside Traffic as part of the overall SEQ intra city flows. Starting first with an understanding that Brisbane has NOT built a TOLL LESS river crossing of the river in 40 years but has built 10 green bridges and rail tunnel / bridge.

      I think we could fit on the foot print with another tier of seating above. Otherwise overhang over the road or acquire some additional land (only low rise development around that site at the moment). There is also surplus State land near the M1 which could be repurposed to better connect straight into South Bank. Thanks for the comment, James.

    While that Metro loop is a decent idea i think it misses some key issues and opportunities. Maybe they were not covered here because they are already though of. The Airport and BICT (cruise terminal) both need better and more public transportation options. I did see on other videos talk about Metro going to Chermside but that's the other line I guess (and there is the idea if it going there and the airport already).
    I love the idea if greening Riverside Expressway and turning it into grade separated bus, bike and pedestrian only. Doing that across from the expanding Southbank parklands will certainly improve the look of the area.

    6.07 Divert Riverside drive using an expanded toll free Clem 7 as outlined in this segment is a long term must particularly bypassing the city to the west . Re-purpose riverside drive for bus, metro, uber and limited car traffic making this the toll road instead of Clem 7. If we increase apartment density around the city = more green space along the river, we need to take high volume traffic pollution and noise out of the equation.... Also very keen to see a second stadium in Woolloongabba rather than knocking the gabba down. There is a lot of old houses in this area and if State and local govt rezoned / resumed this land to provide a strong vision statement for the CBD.

    Is there a petition up yet for the second stadium? For the $330,000 a seat upgrade, it just seems like the logical thing to do. Nobody is going to argue that we wouldn't use it for the Olympics either.

    Great ideas, just not sure of the proximity of second gabba. How come the govt. Doesn't redevelop QSAC? It's basically scaffolding so cheaper to dismantle and rebuild yo over 60 000 capacity. There is also the second smaller track stadium. Furthermore, QSAC is attached to nissan arena and parking can be expanded. Only 10 ks from city with m1 and major roads surrounding it.
    Also the mooted pipeline extending from north qld down to SEQ would ensure no wasted water.

      Main reason QSAC isn't considered is they don't want people travelling in cars. There is limited public transport infrastructure at QSAC and its hard to get in/out of. The Gabba has a new Train Station and Metro Station being delivered, so it will be highly accessible with major public transport infrastructure. Plus, after events, they want people going to restaurants and bars to spend $$$ so the economic benefit flows on for the city. Problem with QSAC is there is nothing there, therefore no one spends any money. Thanks for the comment, Theo, its definitely a common question and plenty of people have asked about QSAC.

      Yes thought that might be the case as train stations too far away. Gabba just sounds overly expensive. Gabba will have trains but surrounding roads will be a shamble.

    I LOVE THE IDEA OF ACTIVATING THE BRISBANE RIVER but removing the side expressway is a bad idea
    also, build upgrading the north bank would be nice for the marina in the city also a cook

    I agree there is a much delayed decision on another dam, but suggest you research Wolfdene Dam, and then tell us how to overcome such pig headedly stupid public policy failures. If Wolfdene Dam had been built, we wouldn't now be looking down the barrel of major water shortages.

    I think we should be extending cross river rail connections east-west (Hamilton to St Lucia). Newstead population is exploding and public transport isn’t keeping pace. There were plans for expanding cross river risk a few years back but they seem to have been shelved for now

    Brilliant ideas. One simply idea, move the West End ferry terminal up towards where everyone lives thats adjacent to Woolworths and all the apartments. It's way down the other end and to walk there you may as well walk towards south bank. There also needs to be some water conditioning as the Brisbane river remains a nasty brown uninviteable swimming location. One mouth full of water out of the river and you'll feel crook like your a sore throat or flu. Need it to look like the water near tangalooma wrecks.

    Really Interesting and informative ideas. Not sure I agree with a new dam in 2023…in my view would have to be for flood mitigation only…the SEQ Water Grid has been drought-proofed and interconnected since 2012 and be supplied by the Big 12 dams, desal plant, or Western Corridor Scheme (some of the best unheralded water infrastructure in Australia). A second desal would be a better use of public funds for future proofing urban growth…

    Like the 2nd stadium idea. Somewhere out Carindale way would be great so the govt might finally have an excuse to build decent public transport links out there which they promised 20 years ago. Build it and they will come. Better work on Anastasia. Not keen on attracting tourists. Sydney can keep them. Build a proper road/rail bridge from Thynne Rd Balmoral across the river. Hello nimbys?

    i feel the riverside expressway is PRIME real estate for an actual, rail metro corridor, i could honestly imagine the initial phase going down the expressway towards mount gravatt (along with more station connections with cross river rail) and north ways can connect up to chermside shopping centre, through other means, the new montreal rer shows how possible a project like this could be. (this itself would make it a rather short rail metro system at about 20km so later phases could extend it up to redcliffe and down to beenleigh for better connections with the existing commuter rail system)

      i love the idea of the bus loop, i can imagine another bus/tram loop going around the outside of westend, across the eleanor bridge to UQ, up to toowong village/station, wesley hospital, which then gives the option of three bridges whether it's the go between, william jolly, or victoria. where it goes inside west end you can get creative with, having it be just more bus service for southbank/cultural centre OR open the opportunity for more mixed use developments inside the westend area, there's really a lot you can do with a lot already being in the area to work with.

    Great ideas. In a river city, why would we need more bridges right? The bright mayor just closed one (to build a walking bridge to his buddies brand new casino), why not close another one? It’s not like traffic is already ridiculous crossing any bridge around here… 👏👏👏

      Are you referring to the closue of Victoria Bridge to cars? That single closure alone has probably the most beneficial upgrade to the entire CBD transport network in the last decade. I don't particuarly like Mel's proposal for an alternative to the Riverway Express and instead I think we need to take public ownership of the Clem 7 tunnel and direct all cross-river traffic through the tunnel. That way commuters can connect to the Inner-City Bypass and continue into Brisbane or into North Brisbane from there and the entire Riverway Express and other major roads can be closed.

      @@PyroManZII how so? Can you please elucidate? I drive over the William Jolly every day, and it is definitely much worse now than before.
      Think Bulimba. From there do the city, it is pretty much across the river. But no, we have to drive 20 minutes, due to a lack of bridge. Brisbane is a river city with 3 bridges in the main hub. That is crazy. Also, from the Story Bridge to the airport, no bridges. And even there, only Sir Leo, which is tolled.
      More bridges people.

    DAMS,,, Wivenhoe was primality build as a flood mitigation dam but was overstocked as a water supply source due to Gov cancelling the Wolfdene Dam in the 90s resulting in bad management and flood creating release volumes. The region does not benefit from rainfalls or elevations ideally suited to efficient scaled hydro power generation. More suburban harvesting for non potable use needs ( flushing) should be incentivized in the building code.

    The riverside express lane bypass, no, too expensive and long only to divert more drivers through west end.
    Connect ipswich, brissy and goldie with a high speed rail, then later theres potential for a line to newcastle, Sydney, and Melbourne

    I think the Riverside Expressway works when the demand isn't too much for it. This is true of any road system. But...no more tolls. If we cannot afford changes without tolls then we cannot afford changes. Why can we afford some roads and bridges but not others ? Tolls can be a very real cost for some. It is unfair. Those who espouse "user pays" have not been affected by that notion. The biggest change in the past 70 years ? The air quality has been improved markedly. People respond to bottle-necks. But good air quality is now a given. The best arterial is the fairly new Kingsford Smith Drive. In my experience it works well. But public transport to Hamilton has to be developed. The Olympic Games is as much about public transport as about venues.

    Maybe create small island's in the Brisbane river.. Have cafes and restaurants. Brisbane's asset is it's River. Having multiple islands within the river will help with connection also. Having bridge from each side of the river connected to them..

    With the metro ring-loop I don’t feel it is an efficient use of resources. The metro would need a dedicated busway built across areas which are almost entirely already serviced by trains, ferries and city loop buses. For all means build a green bridge and paint some bus-lanes around to avoid congestion for the city loop buses, but there is just never going to be enough people that benefit from or use this project to support the need for any major infrastructure. Using all of that money to extend the busway to Capalaba or to extend a section of train-line through Acacia Ridge would have significantly greater returns.

      A business case is currently underway to extend the Metro to Capalaba, its certainly worthwhile. The loop is about connecting key inner city precincts, particularly the Olympics, as well as unlocking 100 hectares of land for high density development. At the moment, they are largely underutilised industrial blocks that are 7km from the CBD. If we had rapid transport to support high density development in their areas, we'd unlocked 10's of thousands of homes for development.

      ​@@melpikos8533 Based off your map I can only see the one suburb that is not already well-serviced by a busway or a train-line which is Bulimba (Coorparoo also isn't but it would be if they invested in an Eastern Busway). That is why I think in conjunction with their access to ferries a green bridge across to Teneriffe for instance to connect with the 199 and 60 bus services would provide all the capacity that area needs (they could extend these routes slightly to head down Oxford St, or they could leave the green bridge as a walking bridge). Truthfully I highly doubt there is going to be anyone suggesting Bulimba is transformed into a high-density residential precient either.
      If the priority is to get the Hamilton area well-connected to the rest of the transport network and support the transformation of that entire area into a high-density residential precint then you will get a lot more bang from your buck by doubling the Doomben line frequency to every 15 every minutes and re-building the stations along the Doomben line up to Pinkenba. With that simple investment which would be significantly cheaper than an entirely new busway you will unlock about 800-1000 hectares of land to be transformed into high-density housing or centres of employment.

      @@melpikos8533 I should also emphasise that there is nothing bad to your plan; building new transport infrastructure even if it duplicates existing infrastructure is always better than not doing anything. But there are just so, so, so many infrastructure projects that would be so much more useful before we could get to building a ring-loop metro service through these particular suburbs.
      The train-line extension from Salisbury to Beaudesert would already support the thousands of employees that work in Acacia Ridge and surrounding suburbs, and would provide the capacity to greatly increase the amount of quality housing provided through the Western Logan area. The busway to Capalaba would connect about seven suburbs worth of residential and commercial areas that currently have no quality infrastructure connections to the city.
      Even if we were to go for some blue-sky thinking and propose something that isn't already being proposed I think services for Western Brisbane would trump any requirement of the Hamilton (or Bulimba) area. Imagine a ring-loop busway that goes through West End, St Lucia, Taringa, Indooroopilly, Kenmore, The Gap, Ashgrove and Kelvin Grove before coming back around through the CBD again. There are four suburbs in that list that have non-existent access to major transport. Even Indooroopilly and Taringa that have access to the train-lines are so fast-growing and such broad regions that they would greatly benefit from more connections. Connect this ring-loop up with bus-lanes painted onto the Centenary Motorway from Indooroopilly to Mt Ommaney and suddenly this one project is connecting more than 100,000 people to critical infrastructure.

    You are on the WRONG TRACK. Working backwards one idea response at a time. The ONLY problem with the riverside expressway is that growth has exceeded its viability as a route to process cross city arterial traffic. The expressway is the ideal size to manage CBD traffic inflows only. What is required is cost reduction = increased use of Clem Tunnel and a new tunnel route to service the norther western suburbs wanting to connect with Southside without travelling via CBD. "Tunnel Baby Tunnel" We are not in a position to turn productive arterials into walking trails. In any case you can walk under in cool shade as you can see with the Queens Wharf boardwalk.

    Run a tunnel from the Ipswich motorway at Archerfield, to the clem 7, then run it to Legacy way/ICB, taking traffic off the riverside expressway, then run it all the way under the Northwest transport corridor, then link it straight up to include the Bruce Highway Western Alternative at from Bald Hills to Caboolture West and then we can call it the M8 Motorway and we can have it as that Western Bypass.

    These ideas are decent for the most part, with the exception of the 2nd Gabba proposal.
    It is silly and shortsighted. Sure, the Gabba rebuild lacks return on investment, and the inconvenience of the rebuild will be great, but do we really want another white elephant (the old Gabba stadium), once a second is built? We don’t have near the demand for a second oval sporting venue to justify this.
    It is also inconsistent with your other proposals targeted at freeing up prime central land. Why would we add a second stadium when land is already at a premium?

    These are great ideas. Green bridge is especially good value for money at 150 milion or so, a real no brainer. Really there needs to be more, and better seperated active transport infrastructure. Along the river, on both sides from Graceville/indoorpilly to Hamilton/Moringside you should be able to bike/walk/run, seperately from the cars the entire way. With the rise of scooters and ebikes there is a real opportunity to reduce congestion by taking cars off the road allowing those who need to drive to get places faster. Since scooters can be taken on buses and trains, there is the additional benefit of connecting active and public transport networks to make driving less desirable. Adding driving infrastructure is more expensive, and never works to combat congestion, because we wait 10 years and by then the added lanes fill up. Demolishing the gabba to replace with a stadium of roughly the same size makes no sense - your idea to build a new stadium is much more sensible if required.

    Thanks for another great video. I like the idea of getting rid of the M3. It's insane that arguably the most expensive terrain in the city is being occupied by a pollution producing highway. Redevelopment of that area could potentially help to recoup the cost of moving the highway as you suggested.
    I would also propose more pedestrian and cyclists bridges, e.g. from Kangaroo Point to New Farm, and from South Bank to Indooroopilly. These would provide options to those contemplating getting out of their cars.

    We do NOT need another oval stadium in Brisbane. The Brisbane Lions play ten to thirteen matches a year and the big bash, maybe six games. One cricket test... and none at all in 2025 for the first time in my lifetime.
    Yet, Lang Park hosts the Broncos, the Redcliffe Dolphins, the Qld Reds, The Wallabies, The Kangaroos, the Socceroos, the Matildas and every visiting stadium concert.
    AFL is a secondary sport in Brisbane... less than a quarter of the players are from Qld. Let Melbourne have it.

      That is the trouble with relying on social media or news outlets to get an idea of crime levels in QLD. Overall crime rates are lower than pre-COVID levels and car theft rates have only marginally increased. In fact car theft rates are still significantly lower than they were about 15 years ago. When we listen to social media and news outlets though we get this sense that there is some uncontrollable crime wave when that really isn't the case.

      ​@@richardzedman1160 Well there is hardly anything of note going on from the statistics so I'm assuming the only thing going on is a political reaction. My belief is that Labor wants to act as if they are getting tough on an imaginary issue before the LNP makes it the next big election issue (like the LNP did at the last QLD state election). Appearing to be soft on law and order (regardless of if there is any merit to this, like the numerous times the federal Coalition has fabricated an 'emergency' asylum seeker crisis) is often where Labor comes undone at elections. We are about a year out from the start of an election cycle so Labor will want to be able to point to all the laws they recently just passed as their "getting tough on youth crime" to make sure LNP has a hard time winning the election on that issue.

    1 - extend the metro - more fuken buses blocking the roads in peak hour. It's bad enough now.
    2 - great idea - tell the useless queensland government - it's for water supply FFS - not to combat climate change.
    3 - no - Brisbane rates are increasing and such grand schemes will only force them up more. Then it becomes way to expensive to live in Brisbane. Stuff overseas visitors - someone has to be able to live here.
    4 - why not
    5 - under that riverside expressway is bikeways and mangroves. It used to work really well but the council stuffed up by creating bike lanes and bus lanes, closing off bridges etc. It's now just a funnel. Fortunately, because of this, CBD patronage is dying. Less need to get into the city. Don't waste the money - replace the council - and get the CBD firing again.
