You can get into a situation like this very quickly, even if you don't consume much. It can be unforeseen higher expenses (dental treatment, broken car, training costs, travel costs to the training center or to the job, employer pays wages too late or unreliably, long-term illness, accident, family obligations, strokes of fate, burst pipe, renovation costs etc.)
I agree, I'm not a big spender at all (don't buy any designer stuff and only buy what I need) and I have managed to accumulate so much debt after one vacation that I didn't pay in full and the debt just started going up and up, it really does snowball pretty quickly. The best thing to do is really only spend on what you can actually pay back, but that's so difficult to do in today's society when everything (even the basics) are so expensive.
I agree with you on the college aspect but I also feel that parents and schools don’t educate children enough about managing finances. Luckily I had a mother that lead me in the right direction or lord knows where I would be today in my life.

It was Marks & Spencer’s who listened to me when I couldn’t pay their credit card and signposted me to a Debt Management Company who like you said never judged but helped me to get my finances back in order. I almost got scammed into writing a cashier’s check for a “fully furnished apartment”. The guy wanted me to go to his bank, provide his account number and have the cashier’s check deposited. Thankfully my coworker saw the red flags and advised against it. I would have been willingly going to deposit guaranteed funds into his account… Never heard back from this guy after I told him I was uncomfortable submitting payment on an apartment prior to even seeing the apartment. Moral of the story: if it’s too good to be true then it probably is. I didn’t even know what a cashier’s check was at that time, too young to know and too eager to move out.
I feel for your younger self. I am glad you survived and got out of it. I remember the horrific trauma of my first job, three years of horrific bullying and being screamed at and lack of appreciation and no opportunity and no way out. So I left them and moved on into another dead end job which was vastly better. I have always been okay since then. Not rich, not famous, but okay! Thank you for the video!

Get any crumby jobs you can and pay off as quickly as you can. If your younger put all your extra money in safe dividend yielding stocks like banks and natural resources.
I was in your situation. Do any jobs you get, perhaps several until you get "out of the red". Than try to improve your skill set and search for an upgarde. Considering the learning disability (please don't consider this as an attempt to insult - it is not) - we currently leave in a climate where people are incoraged to try and get "victim points" for all kinds of biological/behavioral disadvantages they have. But the truth is - employers don't care. People outaide of your family/friends don't care. You have what you have. Grit your teeth and go. No need to mention the learning disability unless asked about - it won't score you any jobs.
I would really love the video about how to go about moving up the ladder in the workplace! I have always worked for minimum wage, I spent years going to college and university but since I graduated university I have lost confidence in my ability to apply for graduate level jobs, I have a fair bit of work experience in general but I've never worked for more than minimum wage and I think i'm nervous about that changing even though it would be a positive thing. I am in some debt, not as much but i'm slowly fixing it, I think it may take me about 2 years from now. For some reason I thought you always had the lifestyle you do now.
Thank you Sophie for being so honest about your past debt load and how you escaped that nightmare. Just last weekend I shredded 3 credits cards that I will never use again. I won't close them, but I am to pay those off within 10-12 months. I have other credit cards that I will pay down too and may have to research loan consolidation. But I have lived large in the past 5 years to make up for being underemployed and miserable in the 2010s. I aim to be debt free within 5-6 years.
Hi Sophie. This was such an honest and heartfelt vlog that I appreciate so much. In Canada (and I’m sure every country), we are starting to see an increase in student enrolment for community college, rather than university. Both cost money but with community college, you learn a trade with almost always a guarantee of work at the end of your schooling. University has become impossibly expensive with no guarantee of anything afterwards except a piece of paper with your name on it. Your vlogs are so relatable and really inspiring for many of us in your community. ♥️

I actually thought I need to search for one old ones to the same topic you did before, but this is a very nice coincidence you've posted a new one lately. I have recently moved to a different country and I had to do a Master before I start a fulltime job (this will make my future job search easier and will pay off). I have 10 years of job experience in the same branch, and this Master is a great opportunity for me. Right now I am in my last semester writing my Master thesis and I am struggling to find a part-time job. No one wants to employ me part-time for a student job, because I am overqualified for that and my coach would have less experience than I have. I am not allowed to work fulltime as well as long as I am a student and do not graduate. Getting a job as a waitress or a parcel packer is also not possible, cause everyone says to me, oh you're in your last semester, you'll leave us in 6 months, and we want a long-term worker. I just thought I need to hear something motivating again and know it is possible to go through money shortage. Thank you for being so honest and opened to us while sharing your story ❤
Omg I resonate so much.. except I don’t have 10 years experience, but 2 masters, and I’m overqualified for entry job, but don’t have enough experience for a higher position. They say: well your degrees say nothing.. I’m like well what am I supposed to do lol. In the midst of all of it was Covid, then I switched countries. No one cares 😂 they are like well? Text books and their cost is NOT a scam. The scandal is that tertiary education and education in general is underfunded. The cost of a $200 book has a value FAR greater over time to the student with a degree. The cost to value ratio is actually shockingly good compared to a handbag. When we vote, it is worthwhile looking at education and its funding, the future depends on it.

Not because of my spending habits but because of my pill addiction. Yet, the stress and all the feelings that come with being in overdraft, having debt collectors call you all day and night… it really consumes you and sucks out all the joy in life. I couldn’t even enjoy my babies cause I was worried that a letter might come and my husband will find out…while I was in hospital after delivery. Terrible, terrible times. Good for you Sophie! Yes a lot of young women including myself get into debt just like you did. It causes so much anxiety. And yes you generally have to hop jobs to get the promotion and money you deserve as I did exactly the same as you. Now many moons later(post 50) I’m not rich but I am comfortable with a beautiful house that is paid for and not a lot of money worries but I still remember what it felt like to be broke and in debt so even today I keep a separate shopping savings account that I use to pay for my handbags and big ticket items. I’m not really a car person so I do drive a cute little beater that has been off for over 7 years but I rather enjoy my handbags and traveling over cars. Everyone has their “thing” that they like to spend money on ad that is okay as long as you stay within your means.

Actually I was getting a scholarship every month for 5+ years from the university- so it was fine to spend here and there. Yes, it was increasing, with time and also because I was a really good student, working hard for being top 1% 😅 and really enjoyed studying. Also this high end education as well as its quality I started appreciating only after I moved into US and realized how much my degree would cost with all the life expenses and books for like 200-800 usd, here in the US. Instead I was kept studying. And learn how to spend money wisely, so I was able to purchase a few appertments in a very good area. Even though I built my career in photography for over 15+ years - I always benefit from a high quality education and confidence it gives: when anything I want I can study. That can be so useful to a lot of people who don’t really know how debts work.. I’ve never had a credit card in my life because the possibility to go beyond what you can afford is so high. I only use a debt card (I don’t know if it’s the right name in English) where money is taken down from the count the exact same moment you spend it. I can track in real time all my expenses and my actual balance knowing exactly what I can afford and what I can’t

I feel bad for college grads. In my area they’re overlooked for interviews because of a presumed lack of reliability, low work ethic and potentially demanding. They’re also seen as a legal risk with a propensity for litigation. This is highlighted by the actions of a minority, and inflated by social media.

Sophie, Thank you for this episode because I think it will help young people to understand a bit better how banks and corporations take advantage of those unaware or just ignorant about how the financial world works. Listening to you tell your story you sound so alone not knowing where to turn. You are obviously very bright, compassionate and strong. So if it this scenario could happen to you, it could happen, really, to anyone. What you describe when you first get to Uni, happened here in the past at our colleges and universities just as you describe. I’m American, and I have met people here who have done exactly as you say. I’ve met young people who are now offered Big Department Store Credit Cards (example Macy’s) and get into debt that way. Credit is important to have in our world today, but it must be managed. How else do we buy a car or a home. It’s a necessary evil, I suppose realistically. But don’t let it get away from you. It makes me so mad when I hear these stories of kids getting credit cards at college--it's just insanity. I remember a friend of ours having a whole collection of t-shirts from different banks he'd applied to for credit cards. Please do another video on getting promoted. I have 2 degrees and a marketing diploma plus event management and have been a coordinator for years. I was actually a marketing specialist at a tech company 8 years ago and lost that job. It took me a year and 17 interviews to find my next job. I applied for what I thought was a marketing position and it ended up being a coordinator role and then it became an executive coordinator role. I stayed there for 5 years. I took a job at a university as a coordinator. I was desperate to leave where I was because of a manager who was sadistic. I took a job at a university for less money because of the opportunity. I was hired as a coordinator again but received the top salary in my range because of my experience. I got along really well with my boss and he was trying to get me promoted. Unfortunately he left and they now have me working doing administrative work which I did 25 years ago at the beginning of my career. I am seeing all these people with less experience and education than I have getting ahead. It is very frustrating. I am afraid I am being pigeonholed at this job. I have applied for some management positions but have not even gotten interviews. There is nothing wrong with my resume. I gear it towards management. I ha e excellent references and I have a great work ethic. I have spoken to HR recently and advised them that i do not want to be pigeonholed and told them what type of work I want to do. I also set up an interview with a director who just began a new role in a newly created department. I am hoping to get hired into an upgraded position. I don’t know what I am doing wrong.

I’m too scared to quit my job because my jump field is small and there are not many jobs. Plus the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t.
All the publisher needs to do is swap one photo in a book and they can call it a new edition.

I was in your situation. Do any jobs you get, perhaps several until you get "out of the red". Than try to improve your skill set and search for an upgarde.
Considering the learning disability (please don't consider this as an attempt to insult - it is not) - we currently leave in a climate where people are incoraged to try and get "victim points" for all kinds of biological/behavioral disadvantages they have. But the truth is - employers don't care. People outaide of your family/friends don't care. You have what you have. Grit your teeth and go. No need to mention the learning disability unless asked about - it won't score you any jobs.

I would really love the video about how to go about moving up the ladder in the workplace! I have always worked for minimum wage, I spent years going to college and university but since I graduated university I have lost confidence in my ability to apply for graduate level jobs, I have a fair bit of work experience in general but I've never worked for more than minimum wage and I think i'm nervous about that changing even though it would be a positive thing.
I am in some debt, not as much but i'm slowly fixing it, I think it may take me about 2 years from now. For some reason I thought you always had the lifestyle you do now.
Thank you Sophie for being so honest about your past debt load and how you escaped that nightmare. Just last weekend I shredded 3 credits cards that I will never use again. I won't close them, but I am to pay those off within 10-12 months. I have other credit cards that I will pay down too and may have to research loan consolidation. But I have lived large in the past 5 years to make up for being underemployed and miserable in the 2010s. I aim to be debt free within 5-6 years.
Hi Sophie. This was such an honest and heartfelt vlog that I appreciate so much. In Canada (and I’m sure every country), we are starting to see an increase in student enrolment for community college, rather than university. Both cost money but with community college, you learn a trade with almost always a guarantee of work at the end of your schooling. University has become impossibly expensive with no guarantee of anything afterwards except a piece of paper with your name on it. Your vlogs are so relatable and really inspiring for many of us in your community. ♥️

I have recently moved to a different country and I had to do a Master before I start a fulltime job (this will make my future job search easier and will pay off). I have 10 years of job experience in the same branch, and this Master is a great opportunity for me. Right now I am in my last semester writing my Master thesis and I am struggling to find a part-time job. No one wants to employ me part-time for a student job, because I am overqualified for that and my coach would have less experience than I have. I am not allowed to work fulltime as well as long as I am a student and do not graduate. Getting a job as a waitress or a parcel packer is also not possible, cause everyone says to me, oh you're in your last semester, you'll leave us in 6 months, and we want a long-term worker.
I just thought I need to hear something motivating again and know it is possible to go through money shortage. Thank you for being so honest and opened to us while sharing your story ❤
Omg I resonate so much.. except I don’t have 10 years experience, but 2 masters, and I’m overqualified for entry job, but don’t have enough experience for a higher position.
They say: well your degrees say nothing.. I’m like well what am I supposed to do lol. In the midst of all of it was Covid, then I switched countries. No one cares 😂 they are like well? You can do a free internship 😅 but who’s gonna pay my bills?
So annoying it seems like education is greatly undervalued nowadays

The 2nd card was just to help my credit rating (which it has). There really does need to be better education on personal finances BEFORE one is old enough to acquire any debt! Great video! This is so helpful and inspiring. We need more RUclipsrs in the luxury community to discuss this issue more often. There are a few ladies that I follow that speak at great length about their financial situation, needs and success.
Text books and their cost is NOT a scam. The scandal is that tertiary education and education in general is underfunded. The cost of a $200 book has a value FAR greater over time to the student with a degree. The cost to value ratio is actually shockingly good compared to a handbag. When we vote, it is worthwhile looking at education and its funding, the future depends on it.

Everything you talk about, the job, the debt getting scammed. I'm in this right now. I'm panicking were going under and im doing all I can to claw my way out and it's not happening. I've just been diagnosed with a disability which is now stopping me from working and I don't know what to do with myself. I'm hoping I'll be where you are some day ❤
Thank you for sharing, I know it’s not easy in today’s world of flaunting wealth and success online even though in reality you’re drowning in debt. Kudos to you for being honest! This is really a success story and I hope some young people come across your video and make smarter decisions than we did :). I was in debt, too. Not because of my spending habits but because of my pill addiction. Yet, the stress and all the feelings that come with being in overdraft, having debt collectors call you all day and night… it really consumes you and sucks out all the joy in life. I couldn’t even enjoy my babies cause I was worried that a letter might come and my husband will find out…while I was in hospital after delivery. Terrible, terrible times. I can relate to all the feelings you had back then, I know them too well.

Good for you Sophie! Yes a lot of young women including myself get into debt just like you did. It causes so much anxiety. And yes you generally have to hop jobs to get the promotion and money you deserve as I did exactly the same as you. Now many moons later(post 50) I’m not rich but I am comfortable with a beautiful house that is paid for and not a lot of money worries but I still remember what it felt like to be broke and in debt so even today I keep a separate shopping savings account that I use to pay for my handbags and big ticket items. I’m not really a car person so I do drive a cute little beater that has been off for over 7 years but I rather enjoy my handbags and traveling over cars. Everyone has their “thing” that they like to spend money on ad that is okay as long as you stay within your means.

Actually I was getting a scholarship every month for 5+ years from the university- so it was fine to spend here and there. Yes, it was increasing, with time and also because I was a really good student, working hard for being top 1% 😅 and really enjoyed studying.
Also this high end education as well as its quality I started appreciating only after I moved into US and realized how much my degree would cost with all the life expenses and books for like 200-800 usd, here in the US.
Instead I was kept studying. And learn how to spend money wisely, so I was able to purchase a few appertments in a very good area. Even though I built my career in photography for over 15+ years - I always benefit from a high quality education and confidence it gives: when anything I want I can study.

That can be so useful to a lot of people who don’t really know how debts work.. I’ve never had a credit card in my life because the possibility to go beyond what you can afford is so high. I only use a debt card (I don’t know if it’s the right name in English) where money is taken down from the count the exact same moment you spend it. I can track in real time all my expenses and my actual balance knowing exactly what I can afford and what I can’t

Can you tell us what bras you wear please? I can never see any seams; you’re perfectly smooth. I’m built very similarly to you so I’d really like to know what you wear. I can relate to what you are saying. I remember I saved up for months to buy a Gucci bag. I was so mad because it didn’t wear well at all. It was the old canvas with the logo and it literally fell apart after a year. My parents never trusted me enough to get a credit card lol.

I feel bad for college grads. In my area they’re overlooked for interviews because of a presumed lack of reliability, low work ethic and potentially demanding. They’re also seen as a legal risk with a propensity for litigation. This is highlighted by the actions of a minority, and inflated by social media.

Listening to you tell your story you sound so alone not knowing where to turn. You are obviously very bright, compassionate and strong. So if it this scenario could happen to you, it could happen, really, to anyone.
What you describe when you first get to Uni, happened here in the past at our colleges and universities just as you describe. I’m American, and I have met people here who have done exactly as you say.
I’ve met young people who are now offered Big Department Store Credit Cards (example Macy’s) and get into debt that way.
Credit is important to have in our world today, but it must be managed. How else do we buy a car or a home. It’s a necessary evil, I suppose realistically. But don’t let it get away from you. Thanks very much Sophie, and I do hope you make further common sense work/business topic videos to bring more awareness.

Hi thank you for sharing your experiences. There are certainly some good tips here to try. Other people always have a lot to say but no solutions. So when you do have a solution to help yourself, good for you. i remember having a friend who would shop luxury items but she can be mean to the SA....I used to go with her just for fun, but It always felt so weird.

It makes me so mad when I hear these stories of kids getting credit cards at college--it's just insanity. I remember a friend of ours having a whole collection of t-shirts from different banks he'd applied to for credit cards. And then the whole thing with the books, etc. Makes you feel like the college experience has been a bit of a scam in some areas. I hope that the bully at that job knows how successful you are now!

Please do another video on getting promoted. I have 2 degrees and a marketing diploma plus event management and have been a coordinator for years. I was actually a marketing specialist at a tech company 8 years ago and lost that job. It took me a year and 17 interviews to find my next job. I applied for what I thought was a marketing position and it ended up being a coordinator role and then it became an executive coordinator role. I stayed there for 5 years. I took a job at a university as a coordinator. I was desperate to leave where I was because of a manager who was sadistic. I took a job at a university for less money because of the opportunity. I was hired as a coordinator again but received the top salary in my range because of my experience. I got along really well with my boss and he was trying to get me promoted. Unfortunately he left and they now have me working doing administrative work which I did 25 years ago at the beginning of my career. I am seeing all these people with less experience and education than I have getting ahead. It is very frustrating. I am afraid I am being pigeonholed at this job. I have applied for some management positions but have not even gotten interviews. There is nothing wrong with my resume. I gear it towards management. I ha e excellent references and I have a great work ethic. I have spoken to HR recently and advised them that i do not want to be pigeonholed and told them what type of work I want to do. I also set up an interview with a director who just began a new role in a newly created department. I am hoping to get hired into an upgraded position. I don’t know what I am doing wrong.
