As a malayali myself and film enthusiast ,it took me 18 years to understand the greatness of Mohanlal. While watching loads of Mohanlal movies as well as other movies of different language during my young age, I always felt that he is not that great in acting as good as other actors, and as I was growing up , and spending a lot of sleepless research for finding out who is the greatest actor across the world, slowly I realized that he wasn't just acting but was behaving ( which I believe a great actor should be capable of) . Still I am not aware of all his 300+ , but as I have watched his major hits and career best movies I can feel the charm and talent he has in him.
And no one gets to know the talent he has in him ,by watching just a couple of movies . Also he lack good looks in the industry, but the beauty in his acting is what made people follow him.
If you seriously doubt his acting skills. Please watch a few movies with subtitile, ( humans all over the world have similar emotions and expressions, just the medium differs)

The Austrian channel JimmyCage has already been reviewing Malayalam movies for years now. They have recently reviewed even "Vadakkunokkiyanthram" and "Kireedam". Very underrated channel and seems to know one or two things about Cinema and reviews unlike certain superficial trailer review channels. Check them out and boost such quality channels.

He is the finest actor Ive seen. Me personally with acting as my passion, my aim is to achieve that outstanding level of effortlessness on screen like him. Mohanalal is not a trained actor, but a gifted actor. Like some people are gifted in studies, he is gifted in his Acting ability, it just comes to him. He has never really prepared or rehearsed even for his hardest roles. Its just mind-blowing. The guy is GOD of acting.
But he's got a comfort zone. That's where he is good at. Out of that he's not that great. These are not my words. It was said by couple of great directors in Malayalam industry.

Mohanlal acts with his eyes. Even a person not knowing the malayalam language would connect to his performance, just touching on what Achara said. Try watching Thanmathra and Iruvar you would get a feel of his range...
Now I've watched *Drishyam* in 3 versions (Malayalam, Tamil & Hindi) and there's this one scene in the end where the husband of the female cop asks whether their son is alive or not - The reaction which the Hero gives to this question without literally answering it, that expression that look those eyes. That scene right there defined what a grand actor Mohanlal is.... I didn't get that feeling that impact from either Kamal Haasan (a great actor) or from Ajay Devgan. Now I know it's unfair to compare Ajay Devgan with someone like Mohanlal because Mohanlal is just in a different league altogether.

Sad that still many Indians still don't know about Mohanlal. It's not their fault as well. It's just that Bollywood dominates the majority of India, and for some strange reason, I don't know why Mohanlal is never offered a good Bollywood movie, or probably he refuses to do so. I want Indians to see more regional cinema to appreciate these legendary actors. I wish the Indian people have the same level of excitement Jaby has while he sees any foreign language film.

As someone who's grown up watching Mohanlal's performance since childhood I am still in awe how he can so easily bring about emotions with just a simple look or not saying a word. I know his new movies (post 2005) doesn't do justice to his talent and I'm hoping he gets roped in to a major international project so the world gets to see him bring characters to life.
