A lot of things happened with NJ Transit’s rail fleet in 2004. The entire Comet II fleet was rebuilt by Alstom and finished around this time, the Comet Vs were still being delivered, new bi-level coaches were currently under construction, new high speed diesel locomotives were starting to be delivered and new electric locomotives finished delivery early this year.
Raritan valley my childhood i was only born 2003 but my parent's grew up right next to the tracks. Looking at these old trains makes me want to travel back in time lol
When the Comet 2's first came back from being refurbished I thought the Comet 4-derived livery looked so cool and the brighter interiors with their late-90s color scheme felt so much fresher than the brown carpet, woodgrain wall panels, and orange/brown seats they had before. Now I think the original look aged better through the cars' first 20 years than the new look has aged through the next 20. The only thing I'm convinced was an actual improvement was being able to run with the doors closed but the traps open for stretches where there are multiple low-platform stations in a row. You couldn't do that on the original Comet 2's because the doors ended at the floor level of the car.
Yep. Construction to restore the second track between CP-Potter and Bound Brook began in 2006 and was completed in December, 2007. I ran the first train to operate over the restored #1 track; it was a Q300 with CSX 700 as solo power (thanks to issues back in Philly early that morning).
The double tracking between Bound Brook and Potter was completed in 2007. I ran the first train down the new #1 track between those points after being posed with an NS train adjacent on #2 for official photos by Conrail and other officials just east of Bound Brook. I still have my Form D from that trip somewhere, and took a photo of it as well for posterity.
@@CentralJerseyRailfan That was already double track... it went single track from Potter on westward up till 2007 when they filled the gap. Now it's all double track to Port Reading Junction, with two tracks continuing slightly over 2 miles to Sunnymeade Road on the CSX Trenton Line, and two track continuing up the NS side a bit over 3 miles, if I recall, before going to single track.

Have you noticed that the disco stripes on the Comet IIm's have all faded out, but remain looking like new on the Comet IV's?
@@trainman1971 I have...and the IV interiors seem to be at least slightly less broken, too, despite being about 5-8 years older.
Septa stopped here until 1981 while going to newark nj.
Never knew the Lehigh Line was only one track going through Bound Brook

Nice video. I was only 8 and thought NJT trains were amazing back then.
Before the dark times
Noticed the LEHL was single tracked in this video. Thought they were double tracked in 2000 till I saw this
