My favorite thing about this musical is that they didn’t write Patrick or mr Krabs the way modern SpongeBob would write them with Patrick being the lazy selfish friend and Krabs being the person who would sell his workers for a penny
You can't tell from the cast recording, but they had a person with all the gadgets doing the sound effects live during the show. On Broadway he was under the box seats at audience left. On the DVD, it was not shot in a traditional theater so his SFX area moves around so it is in the shot from time to time.
3:15 That sound you hear is Mr. Krabs walk sound effect. What’s cool about this show is there is a sound effect guy on stage who matches all the character’s movements
I love this musical! And a fun fact for you, almost every song is written by a different composer or band, including David Bowie and Sara Barilles. If there’s a reprise of a number, it’s usually the same person, with the GOAT Jonathan Coulton (he wrote the ending songs of both Portal games) taking the lead for most of the names.
David Bowie actually wrote No Control, which is the biggest compliment a soundtrack can get. Also Stephanie Hsu who is the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once, originated the roles of Karen for the play, and Christine Caligula in Be More Chill
The Broadway cast was filled with so much talent and history. Here's some that I know: Lilli Cooper, Sandy Cheeks, was in the original cast of Spring Awakening. You might remember the song you said you'd never listen to again "The Dark I Know Well". Cooper has also played Helene in The Great Comet! Sadly, she wasn't able to return to play Sandy in the proshot. Gavin Lee, Squidward, is known for incredible and unique tap dance numbers. For instance, Gavin played Bert in Mary Poppins the Musical and had a moment where he tapped on the top of the stage upside-down! Recently, he played Lumiere in Beauty & The Beast, another character with an odd costume to tap to. Wesley Taylor, who played Plankton, also included a fast rap during his version of When the Going Gets Tough. He's also in Alice By Heart as the Hatter. Taylor would reunite with Ethan Slater, SpongeBob's actor, in the recent Off-Broadway revival of Assassins. Karen the Computer was played by Stephanie Hsu. Sadly, like Cooper, she wasn't able to return for the proshot. But, she's probably has the most successful name to her credits. In the movie world, you'd recognize Stephanie as Joy, the daughter from THE most awarded movie ever in cinematic history: Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. EDIT: Also, yes Patchy The Pirate! Tom Kenny, the voice actor for SpongeBob, also played Patchy in the cartoon and the musical proshot.
I remember watching this when they aired it on Nickelodeon a couple years ago and be surprised at the quality. Such a good show! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I have seen Gavin Lee (Squidward) perform as Bert in Mary Poppins in Chicago years ago. It is so bizarre hearing that cartoonish, “I hate everyone” voice come out of this brilliant performer.
I feel like this musical could’ve so easily turned out to be a lazy, soulless cash-grab, but you can really tell how much love and care was poured into it from everyone involved. Even though Spongebob was a huge part of my childhood, I really didn’t expect much out of the show- but it was such a pleasant surprise!! I gotta agree with everyone else in the comment section, you should absolutely check out the pro-shot if you’re able! You mentioned how the music makes you feel like a child again, but seeing the sets and costumes really takes that feeling to another level. The set-pieces fashioned from common objects (pool-noodle coral my beloved), the kid-playing-dress-up style costumes (I will never shut up about Pearl’s big stompy platform boots and Mr. Krabs’ boxing gloves), the way the actors perfectly embody their characters- it’s all just so playful and nostalgic. Even if you don’t do a reaction, it is so worth a watch!!
This album is from off-broadway version, I personally prefer the broadway version they did which added and changed a few songs, but they never released an album for that which is quite sad. So if you went to watch the tour I promise you that there’ll be new surprises
im so happy you reacted to this! spongebob is one of my favourite musicals and i'd love for you to react to the proshot they filmed in 2019!! the costumes and set are absolutely spectacular!! you'd also get more context on whats happening 😅
I’m so sad there’s no plankton fast rap in the soundtrack for when the going gets tough, I was Patrick in a community theater production and my favorite part was bopping along while our plankton broke it down.
I had the choice of doing 13 the musical or SpongeBob this summer and without knowing anything about either I picked SpongeBob and good thing because SpongeBob is so much better, and it’s very unexpected I really thought it was going to be bad but the day I applied for an audition spot I watched it and fell In love, I got cast as sandy. No control is insane, I love it so much, maybe because I was already a David Bowie fan
I got to play Mr. Krabs my senior year and it was absolutely a high point for me and one of the most fun I've had with a show. So glad you reacted to it cause it's so fun.
@@elieliellio that's fair the rap is insanely hard, I was genuinely impressed when our productions Plankton did it the first time. Funnily enough he was a junior as well.
The costumes for this musical are so cool. Especially squid wards. They could’ve put them I. Really cheesy costumes but all of them have such interesting concepts.
I’m currently playing squidward in a production of this and actually so sad that squidward doesn’t sing more in best day ever it was my favorite song from the tv show and I barely sing any of it 😂
I think you missed some specific bits in songs, because I remember Sandy mentioning the 'eruptor-interruptor' which they had to put in the volcano to stop it from exploding. In 'best day ever' you can also hear some fairy dust ish sparkle sounds but in the show there's bubbles instead of lava coming out of the volcano. Also it's a long time ago that I saw this but I think the volcano was an evil scheme by plankton?? Not sure about that though. Oh and in chop to the top I think there is a kind of vertical maze of ladders which Ethan (spongebob) traverses beautifully without missing a single f-ing note. Like another comment mentioned you should really watch the behind the scenes of this and I believe the full show is on disney+ or something like that. You should really watch it, the visuals are so incredibly thought through!!
So there is a proshot version you can watch but if you can see the show live. I didn’t get a chance when it was on Broadway but the show is amazing. And songs definitely make more sense in context, I think the book is strong and links songs that on the cast recording can seem disjointed at times.
I won't say what happened to save the day (watch the DVD or stream) but it involved a lot of bubbles. My job is to fix movie projectors but we also have other mor business type projectors and some if the ones used in the Broadway production were from the company I work for. About a month or 2 before the show closed they replaced the 2 lamps in each projector and shortly after they were overheating and one of the lamps would turn off. They sent me in to help troubleshoot. They didn't replace or clean the air intake filters when they changed the lamps and they were caked up by a mix of dust and dried out bubble solution. They rinsed out the reusable filters and were back to full brightness. So I helped. I couldn't touch anything, because union rules but I directed them to the solution, and worked in an actual Broadway house.
and in the version I watched BFF was before No Control, and I feel it eases you into the panic. I've never been sure why they swapped the song placements on the album
Aside from being Karen, on my off night, I also played like, 6 different ensemble characters, one of which was one of the pirates, and that song was so fun lol, but the costume changes were so stressful😭😭
Without going too much into things, this show got me through a really tough summer - I was finishing up my Master's thesis, and one week before my defense, I ended up in hospital. During my 3-day stay, I had the music stuck in my head whilst I watched re-runs of Spongebob on Nick. The simplicity and nostalgia helped me keep my spirits up. My dad drove through the night to be with me until after my defense, and we watched the pro-shot together. We had a blast! I definitely cry every time I listen to the album or watch the pro-shot because it's so pure and so earnest whilst being true to the animated show.
Considering the New album came out for the Broadway cast recording I’d highly recommend you listen to parade, it’s an extremely intense show but an important story to tell I’d also recommend listening to the original Broadway album as it has more dialogue which provides more on the songs

Hi again. I really want to recommend a musical reaction. Probably already h. But I have a problem. The only available full production I've been able to find is in Japanese. Which is a great production...but you'll be concentrating on subtitles!! There is a full English demo that is brilliantly performed. And you can even find a recording of the Japanese production on RUclips that has the English demo more or less superimposed over the Japanese songs when they show up in the show. The only major caveat is... other than switching constantly back and forth between Japanese and English, the English lyrics are so f****** surface-level that it's obnoxious. Maybe you can decide which version would be best for your first experience. Death Note The Musical
