To this day, I am filled with such sorrow and anger over the fact that not only did Laura Bailey get death threats for portraying Abby, but her son, Ronin, who was a toddler at the time, his life was also threatened. Death threats. Over an actress who played a complex character so brilliantly. It hurts my heart at what she had to endure because she's just so incredible.
I think dev commentary is one of the most beautiful things in gaming. I wish more studios were able to do this regularly. I love hearing the cast and directors talking about dev intentions and, the past few years, reactions, everything. Loved every minute of this in game, and I cant wait to revisit these moments over the next few years.
I so agree! I wish they included commentary from more of the designers, I'd love insight into how they built gameplay levels etc too. hopefully they'll cover some of that in the documentary that comes out next week
You'd enjoy this game's GDC talks. They go into way more detail about stuff like that than they ever could in these short segments with only audio. Very fun and informative to hear how everything is made and iterated on!
Yeah this feels insanely valuable to me. Not to sound lonely, but it's just amazing to imagine you're almost in a room with them together playing the game while they are giving their thoughts... in a way it's exactly that though right. Magical stuff.
It's really nice hearing Neil say how everything is intentional.. Something that some players miss, is that you're meant to be angry/anxious/sad/frustraited/not want to do certain things.. The more I see of this game even after beating it 4 times, the better it becomes. Such a fine crafted piece of art.
Few studios even ALLOW their beloved characters to be so vulnerable, so human... Magic plot armor protects player feelings while lazy studios profit from predictable fan service. Naughty Dog's among the ONLY companies in existence with the boldness to challenge such expectations. 😎
I'm glad Neal clarified a bit. I know a lot of people think Ellie is going back to Jackson at the end. But I never took it that way personally. I took it as shes Joel now in a way. She learned she needs to sever ties and never get close to anybody again. In her mind thats the only way to not feel the pain anymore I'm sure. She sees the world now in the dark way Joel did. So she leaves the guitar , leaving the last connection she had with Joel behind and is heading out to a new place.. Where ever that may be. I think Jackson would just be too much of a reminder of things. Tommy and Maria are not the same people she knew anymore. Jesse is gone. Dina and The Baby have just been hurt by her actions of leaving them. She couldnt go back and just live in that garage again or Joel's house.. Its bittersweet and sad really. But it came full circle. By Joel refusing to face the grief and pain of losing someone again... he inadvertently put Ellie into that position in the long run and now she has become him.
But on the other hand, Joel managed to get closer to people again after he met Ellie and she gave him a reason to try. He also reconnected with his brother Tommy after their destroyed relationship, as we can see in part 2 where they're on good terms. So he really didn't cut his ties with all of them * forever *, only in the beginning, but he healed some of those things later. So Ellie in this game is slowly isolating herself from everybody (like Joel did after Sarah) and ultimately decides to go totally alone on her last "quest" to Santa Barbara, but then the epilogue with her leaving the guitar and wearing Dina's bracelet can be viewed as her attempt to begin to change that way thinking and try to heal. That doesn't mean that everything can be healed because that's impossible (you can't just pretend like nothing bad is happening) but that maybe she's going to/wants to try at some point, at least.
Great take on the hero’s journey “template”, where the master/mentor has died or disappeared, and the main character becomes the mentor in the end. Luke Skywalker became Obi Wan Kenobi (as a Jedi master) Ellie became Joel (as you explained) There are numerous other examples in literature and movies that you can probably think of.
Why is it like that?? I came to the comments to try and figure it out. Also in some scenes in different videos Abby will have a short braid versus long?
yeah Abby’s jewelry and makeup totally threw me off lol. you’d think someone traveling across states on an obsessive revenge quest wouldn’t really care to bother with that kind of thing
17:22 I can't believe they actually referenced that silly rumor that Neil self inserted himself as Manny just so he could spit on Joel's corpse. That's pretty funny.
That's gotta be the single dumbest thing I've ever heard. The idea that someone would do that to a character in a project they've worked on for 10 years is so insanely asinine, it's baffling anyone could believe that.
Yeah, it was always just fake news presented by these pathetic, rage-bait channels that desperately pander to their audience, telling them things they want to hear. Like sure, the guy who LITERALLY CREATED your favorite character is now spitting on him. Neil can have fun pretending that's true since it's obviously so ridiculous. 🤣
Just goes to show (especially after watching the Grounded 2 documentary) that these are actual human beings with feelings that can also be hurt beyond comprehension (through death threats especially obviously...) with sh*t rumors like this when working on such a huge almost sometimes seemingly impossible project. I feel insane even having to say this, but it feels like a ton of people seem to NOT get this! Thank you Naughty Dog for not giving into the hate, the game beautifully reflects how we all should treat senseless haters. Let them go, it's just not worth it.
I feel really bad for the developers and especially for Laura and Neil for how the leadup and release of this game turned out, the way they talk about it during the credits, covid isolation was in full so they couldn't celebrate together and then just this torrent of vitriol before the game even came out and almost even more afterwards... This game got its own back though, there are so many people like me who love it so much and I do hope they are able to consistently take comfort in knowing this counterbalancing positivity and love people have for what they created, not just the awards, but the people who love it, who connected with it, were emotionally moved by it. When you pour your heart and soul into something like this, you deserve to feel great about it and I hope I get to experience that when I start my career in game design.
it is sad but they did still win game of the year... and the people that actually care about the story and game series give it credit for being one of hte best games ever.
The intial hate was all from people yet to play the game/jumping on the band wagon of perceived politics (Which there were none).. The drama started well before the game was released.. But I've seen as times gone on, people who actually play it fall in love with it. Its why its so important to experience things yourself. But this is common with timeless pieces of art, the initial response is never all positive.
@@traviscue2099 yeah, the hate actually originated in Left Behind because of Ellie being gay and came up again in Part II's E3 reveal when Ellie kisses Dina. In fact each wave of hate for the game was largely driven by bigotry, the most intense hatred during the big leaks a few months before release was the misogyny and transphobia around Abby (people saying she was trans just because she was muscular and because there was a confirmed trans character in the game which we know now to be Lev). There was even some antisemitism directed at Neil fuelled partly because the leaks drew false rumors that the Scars were christian bigots (only the latter being true of course). I think they ended up making the Torah and other stuff you find in the synagogue in game indestructible as it was very evident that people would post videos vandalizing it. That's a big part of the vitriol, but of course plenty was also driven by this sort of basal tribalism where the game of course was designed to make you hate Abby from the start, it's just that people never outgrew it because they refused to empathize with her. Part of that also stems from people's tribalism with Joel and Ellie against the Fireflies, lots of people just singlemindedly viewing them as the bad guys, refusing to step out of Joel's POV to examine the morality of what they were doing, because Joel never did. Ultimately a lot of the hate does stem from deliberate creative choices that the developers knew would cause conflicting reactions and that's why I respect it so much, they deliberately had an artistic vision and didn't care whether the it was fanservice(y) enough for the less emotionally mature audience members to get it. That's what I find really funny when asshles say it "panders to the LGBT" or whatever, because this is like the LEAST pandering game I could imagine and it was intentionally so.
@@traviscue2099 there is politics in it for sure.(good ones) of acceptance and universal human love. Not the fake Christian love. All love is love. And all ways of living your life are valid. But that's just a small part of the game.
1:40:07 Such a real detail having Ellie hear the voice of Joel masking Tommy's voice when she is at one of her lowest of low moments in the story. It's also incredible to me to realize the fact that Tommy is there calling Ellie's name to help her out of that low moment and take her back to safety, much like how Joel called out to Ellie in TLOU Part 1 after Ellie had just killed David, the man who put Ellie in the most danger she had ever consciously been in. Joel was always the protector to a fault, and even though Ellie ended up hating him for it, the one voice she hears when she needs to be comforted and protected (from her own actions) the most in this part is Joel's. This story of revenge; how far you can take it until it destroys almost all you have, as well as redemption with Abby, knowing she has made many mistakes but choosing now to do the right thing is just as powerful now as the day (well, days) I first saw it all the way through. It is heartbreaking, brutal, filled with sorrow, and heartwarming all at the same time and I am so thankful you guys put such time, effort and emotion into making such a great and harrowing story.
I love watching playthroughs by people (especially related to their game). I like seeing how they handle the hospital room in the first game. Lots of times they will hem and haw and decide what to do. Cascina did not disappoint. She was awesome!
The commentary was acctually really interesting, and gives the idea of what was going through the minds of Neil Druckmann and Ashley Johnson and other actors and creators. Makes me appreciate the game and its story even more. Also what everyone had to go through to create this game, from just hate to death threats, is really sad to hear.
Maybe they will (I very much hope so, though I know I have to keep my hopes down since Neil always finds ways to do the unexpected... In a positive way)
I think that it speaks to the lingering light of Ellie's humanity - that in spite of not knowing this very crucial information that could potentially resolve this conflict on its own - that she CHOOSES to spare Abby. I think that seeing Joel in those final moments reminded Ellie not only of who she loved and lost, but also who she doesn't want to be. Joel would've absolutely murdered Abby without hesitation in the same scenario, but Ellie's compassion spared her in the very final moments. I'm so relieved that the writers decided not to roll with the Ellie kills Abby ending. I feel like it truly would've undone the excellent story they were developing at its most crucial moments.
Yes, I thought to myself several times: “Why don’t they talk to each other MORE?” Why doesn't Ellie ask in more detail what happened in the hospital for 2 years(!)? Why doesn't Joel ask Abbie again who she is? He could have explained to her that her father stood in his way with a scalpel because he wanted to kill a girl who was like his daughter. The Fireflies/Abbie's Dad didn't want to talk to Ellie and Joel, but wanted to operate immediately. Abbie says to Ellie in the theater "You killed my friends." She could also have explained her actual motive for Joel killing her father. Ellie could have told her that Owen and Mel's deaths were in self-defense because they wanted to bring her down. Why didn't Owen first call out to Ellie that Mel was pregnant? Only afterwards does he tell her "She's pregnant", which Ellie couldn't have known, and thus blames her for his stupid attack, with which he wanted to protect his number one Abbie, but with which he endangered his pregnant wife Mel . But if there was more talking, it would of course destroy the drama that the screenwriters want to create.
1:10:23 I love that Neil acknowledges the Jesse/joel swap here. While i love the game that part always kills me when I play it because I remember how excited I was when I saw Joel there
@@PetroGameplay I think it would be if Joel is not in the game at all. Like that one movie where ana de armas was in the trailer but not in the film. So legally speaking this probably doesnt count because hes just not in that scene. Although its a real shitty move and as Neil said it even he has mixed feelings about it now
@@PetroGameplay it's no more false advertisement than the original trailer for the game. that scene of Ellie playing guitar and Joel watching her was never in the game either, but strangely I never see people complain about that.
srsly what is wrong with people... why do you even give a fuck. They explain it was to not cement into peoples mind that for sure Joel is dying to protect the twist. he says he isnt sure it was the right direction but he knows it was done for the right reason @@tlou_explained
@@PetroGameplay no because that teaser saved a lot of people from being spoiled about joels death. Until the pieces. of shit who leaked it later. The Joel and Jesse swap was just a little misdirect that people need to get over.
The Last of Us is my favorite story ever told. And when I say that, I mean both parts, because they are just that: two parts of one story, and now even the HBO series. No story has ever affected me to the point this story has, and the love I have for it is so deep that it's legitimately hard to quantify. I love it.
I absolutely love that you referred to the games as two parts of the same story because they really are. A lot of the people that really despise this game completely break up the two parts and ignore part 2 all together. That's a really cool way to look at these stories that I haven't before!
Same. And it will only gain wider recognition when the story is told via the tv show. Which is a shame but good that people who will never play a game can get to experience this incredible story.
Dina's face model, Cascina Caradonna, did a play through of the game on RUclips. Since Cascina was only the face model, they didn't know what Dina did in the game. This was such a jarring scene for them to watch because they were seeing themself in situations they didn't remember.
My favorite thing in Ellie's room is the snow globe with the deer in it. I feel like so many people didn't realize that hunting that deer was actually teaching Ellie how to beat David later on.
I'm so glad that Naughty Dog makes these documentaries. Really makes me enjoy the game more knowing all the thought processes and work that went into every moment. And coming back months/years later for a trip down memory lane.
It took me this long to realize both Ellie and Abby had a panic attack 2:53:36 in the same place for the cause and effects of their revenge and mistakes 😮
TLOU2 remains one of my favorite game stories ever told. It's painful and brilliant and real, and I am in awe of the directors/writers/actors who brought it to life.
OH my god, I clicked on another video and realized you're the same person who made the most AMAZING show reactions with your friend a year ago!! (A year. oh my god). I periodically go back and watch that as well as you and your brother's playthrough, because you GET IT, it's like you speak the soul of all die hard fans lol. Thank you for uploading the commentary, I haven't played the remaster yet so I didn't expect to have access to this...thank you!
It’s crazy to see that the cut scenes are just four hours out of a thirty-hour campaign. That’s a testament to the developers embedding memorable moments during gameplay. We learn about the relationships and the world through the incidental banter and notes. Halley mentions this in how Joel didn’t know Ellie was gay yet at 1:15:57, dialogue that happens outside the cutscenes. All of the open-world Seattle conversations, the talk about Bill’s town and way of life, the way Ellie and Dina underestimate the scale of the WLF, etc. I say invite them back! Get comfortable and give us commentary for the entire game, because there’s so much more to talk about! It’s selfish, always wanting more from them, but there are huge swathes of game I’d love to hear them cover.
I love how the banter and notes give us so much. "So on patrol today Jesse told me Cat referred to me as her girlfriend. She's so open about everything. She talks to her mom about us. She held my hand when we were all out at the lake. Kissed me in front of our friends. Everyone seems to know except Joel. Should I tell him? I don't know. I don't know how he'd react." From that, you see she is afraid to tell Joel and is a bit in awe of Cat being so open and having the ability to talk to family.
@@ChibiHoshiDragon One of my favorite conversations between Ellie and Dina comes after they go down the mudslide on their way to the television station. Ellie talks about Bill and his town. Dina says he sounded crazy and alone. Surprisingly, Ellie sticks up for him. His way of life is appealing to her now. It’s a great foreshadowing of her pushing everyone away (or getting them killed) and ending up alone.
I always thought of Joel's death as a reflection of Sarah, it happens so fast and we feel all the emotions at once. The big difference is we got to be Joel in a way that we never could with Sarah.
Loved every minute of this Game. The gameplay, combat mechanics, different perspectives and parallels. The story is excellent and dark but in the most beautiful way. Great piece of media!
This game is a pure MASTERPIECE. Brilliantly told with so much love and detail immersed in one of the most impactful and memorable stories ever created in a video game. The devs and actors should be celebrated and appreciated for giving us so much passion in their acting and execution. It was an absolute shame what happened after release and how so many people missed the mark this game created in the video game industry. I’ve played hundreds of games in my day since I was a child and I can honestly say with absolute conviction that “The Last Of Us” both 1 & 2 is one of the greatest games I’ve ever played in my entire life. Absolutely nothing short of a classic masterpiece!
“But it’s such a stoopid story, Joel went out like a beotch not like the man he was in Part 1, Neil Cuckman is a hack, the game is woke because Ellie is gay, there’s no way Abby can get that big because women don’t make testosterone and males don’t make estrogen, Abby is trans, story doesn’t make sense because Ellie gave up her quest for revenge at the end, blah blah blah” The silent majority agrees this game is a masterpiece on a whole new level. The loud minority who says absurd things like the above just don’t get the game (and get REALLY mad when they’re told they don’t get it). I’m sure you’ve heard it all. They have no idea of the scope of work and thought that went into every little detail in this awesome story.
One kind of dark but silver lining of the story is that despite the brutality of Joel's death, and despite the fact that he wouldn't have wanted Ellie to have to witness it, he got to die knowing in no uncertain terms that under all the resentment she had about St Mary's, Ellie cared so deeply for him. That was a long sentence.
Thanks for this. I heard they added optional commentary for the whole main story and I wanted to listen to it, but didn't feel like playing through the game again just for that. One long video to just relax and listen to is really nice and convenient.
So I’m one of those people who read the leaks and went into the game fully expecting to hate it. And after getting the platinum I came away from my experience with a very negative feeling. It wasn’t specifically the story beats or the obvious subversions, but a combination of both. Even with the full context of events, the game wasn’t clicking with me. I felt it was subversive for the sake of subversion. So I moved on, disappointed but thankful that Part I was still an experience I could cherish. Having just completed Part II Remastered, my mind has shifted dramatically. The details in its narrative made me reevaluate my previous issues and critiques. Why did Ellie spare Abby? Why did her final memory of Joel not resonate with her prior to Santa Barbara? Or even Seattle? Because the humans mind isn’t a simple thing. It’s a struggle. Ellie knew revenge wouldn’t bring her peace. She knew she was losing everything leaving Dina. Her leaving that guitar wasn’t just her finally putting aside her misguided crusade for justice. It was her finally letting Joel go. The final shot of her leaving to me is purposefully to show that she has the potential for a fresh start. The camera could have cut at the guitar and we could have not shown Ellie walking out. Where she’ll go next, maybe we’ll see. Or not and that’s satisfactory. The game has its issues. No game is perfect. And I’m in no way amused at the treatment of both the cast and developers by reprehensible actors. Covid hit us all bad, we were isolate and perpetually online. Given what we now know of the effects the pandemic had on mental health, the leaks only exasperated those to vent without context. I just hope now time has past people can see it with fresh eyes and a new perspective. Sorry about the long comment, I needed to vent.
I wish that people who hated this game would watch behind the scenes commentary like this because I really think it would at least help them appreciate/understand it more
I don't like the game and I watched this to see where I was wrong but they didn't clarify many important thing, it made think they just put a story in a rush without much thinking, so now I'm just disappointed
I still am of the opinion that this game would've digested better if it was actually two games and Abby's came first, so that we could know and accept Abby's character without the added context that she killed Joel. I think that's really the main problem people have. I think most people got the point of the story and really understand Abby's side of the story and the motivation. It's just that they hate her character simply because it's hard to accept someone when you know they've hurt someone you knew (I'm anthropomorphising the characters a bit much but the point stands). It's just human nature.
Having said that, I wholeheartedly agree. Watching this commentary actually does make this all go down easier and the added depth of each character makes me appreciate it more. The fact that all my feelings were validated because they wanted to elucidate that reaction + most importantly, and I know it sounds silly, but hearing the director and Abby's voice actor also express some sorrow for how Joel went, actually helped because subconsciously I associated them with villains of the story 😅
Anyone who contributed to the egregious backlash to this game doesn’t have the emotional intelligence to appreciate the art of this game. How embarrassing for those of you like that. Over a piece of fictional media. Thank you to all of you who made the best piece of storytelling I’ve ever experienced. ❤
Imagine waiting 7 years to play as your most beloved character just for them to die in the first act??? That’s why there is backlash. I don’t think people are upset about Joel dying, it’s the way he died and the timing of his death. Add that to the fact that you play as his killer before he dies. If they would’ve told the same story in a way that allowed fans to enjoy his character more then they would not have been mad honestly.
I did wait 7 years to play as my favorite character in my favorite story …and I didn’t lose my grip on reality. I accepted it as how they told the story, because it was the best and most impactful way. Which made me appreciate it more. And it was more realistic that way. It’s no different in real life, when you lose someone unexpectedly, why should art be any different?
@@authorryankurr Well you're saying people who gave backlash lacked "emotional intelligence". That's different than people who just don't believe it was "more realistic" or that "it was the most impactful way". I personally enjoyed the story of the sequel, but I also don't think it was the best route they could've taken to pick up the story. Does that mean I don't have emotional intelligence?? No. I just have different desires for the Last Of Us Story than you do. Most people miss playing as Joel. Most people wanted to see Joel die with more honor and not get beat to death by a golf club. Most people didn't like the fact the game follows many of the same tropes that show up in other forms of media lately by replacing the male protagonist with a woman(in this case 2 women). And if people have these kind of opinions about the game, that is fine. doesn't mean they are wrong or emotionally immature.
Why are you talking like it's a cult? We're you high when you wrote it haha? Jokes aside could you explain what do you mean with not having the emotional intelligence to appreciate it? What am I missing?
@@gaia7240 Let me clarify my point about emotional intelligence in reference to TLOU2. When I mentioned emotional intelligence, I was referring to the capacity to understand and process the complex emotional and narrative elements the game presents. While being an action/adventure game... it explores themes of loss, revenge, and the consequences of violence in a nuanced and realistic manner. It requires players to empathize with characters, even those whose actions might initially seem unjustifiable or antagonistic. It also forces players to engage with storylines and characters that actually exist in the real world, regardless of what some ignorant basement dweller would like to engage with. The backlash often stems from a reluctance to engage with these themes and resistance to characters and storylines that defy traditional expectations, especially within video games, which are overwhelmingly heteronormative and violent. Unfortunately, this has led to incredibly hateful reactions from some individuals, often hiding behind anonymity online, who choose to lash out rather than try to understand the deeper narrative, choosing to hate rather than be aware and appreciate. It's not about being part of a cult or being under any influence; it's about enjoying a story that doesn't shy away from depicting the harsh realities of its world, even when those realities are uncomfortable. What you might be missing is this layer of complexity. The game asks players to see beyond their initial judgments and understand the motivations driving each character. This depth is what makes the narrative so impactful and why it resonates strongly with many players, myself included. No one loved that a beloved character died, does that mean that the game is trash and the actors portraying fictional characters need to be harassed? No.
I could play both parts, listen to the commentary and podcast a million times and never get bored of it all. Such an amazing flawed masterpiece part 2 is and I want more Ellie and Abby and everyone else we have met int this world. We are definitely allowed to have our opinions but we cant force others to agree with us and thats ok, but its very upsetting people have to go so far as death threat to an amazing actress and her family... Good for all of them, especially Laura for staying as positive as they did and supporting each other despite the negative things they endured because of sad petty people who cant seperaye fantasy from reality... Laura is an amazing actress and i cant wait to see what else she signs up for ❤ Ashley nailed it as Ellie and Laura crushed it as Abby. Like i said more Ellie and Abby for me please!
I wish Neil explained how the heck Ellie, Dina and Tommy survived and got out of there after that confrontation with Abby. That’s the only part that was really hard to believe.
yeah haha tbh that's the most unrealistic thing about the game besides the fungus people😅 but also in the same vein Joel shouldnt have survived being impaled with a rusty piece of rebar with only a shot of penicillin and some amateur stitches
neil didn’t exactly explain this part of the game, but he said in another sequence that the player has to “suspend their belief” while playing the game a bit. after all, it is a videogame, and even realistic games such as red dead have a few moments where some stuff just doesn’t make sense. anyways, there’s a lot of details in tlou 2 that aren’t realistic, such as how can Ellie use her guns after swimming in the water with them? even the mechanic of listening mode isn’t realistic either, because how can ellie see through walls? i am agreeing with you though that you’ll somehow need superhuman strength and dexterity to make it back to jackson after getting absolutely blown to smithereens, but people need to remember that a game as big as this one cannot be 100% realistic or explained.
I wish Tommy got a bit more respect. The way they were speaking about him at that scene was disappointing. The man literally lost everything and is crippled. Limping, his sight (his biggest asset as a sniper) all gone, on top of losing HIS BROTHER... nobody asks about him, nobody tries to protects him, nobody comforts him. Think about that. Its horrible. Tommy deserves better.
Man, I can only imagine what Troy feels when he watches this scene. I’ve played this game only 3 times. This third time is the newest remaster, and I didn’t know if I’d cry in this scene or not because to be honest I’d seen the leaks and the first time I played it I think it effected my reception of this scene happening so early without knowing what happens much later in the game. But man. Even watching it now, after having seen the rest of the game and reflecting on everything that happens in the game, but also my life, I cannot watch this scene without a waterfall just flowing down my face. I applaud ALL of the actors and don’t know if another game will ever come close to touching me the way this game did.
It's always been clear to me that "guilt" and "tribalism" were both MAJOR themes in this game. Nearly every main character is DRIVEN by either guilt or tribalism (or both)... Glad this commentary further verifies that!
I'm a little late to this video but omg do I love this game love the fact that I can hear the actual creators talk about their work. Its so amazing to me.
If you couldn't put together the fact that Ellie split from Jesse because they overheard about a "sniper" and Jesse wanted to go find him and Ellie didn't, and then Jesse and Tommy both show up at the Aquarium ... You are on the left side of the bell curve
1:08:32 only just noticed: Ellie goes from the flashback with the rocket launch tape that has radio chatter recordings during her moment with Joel, and has a moment with Dina that's punctuated by radio chatter
Keep doing what you’re doing. Yea it sucked that Joel died but I’ve never hated the game because of it or any of the actors. I love this game and respect the writers decision for its storytelling. Now I’m waiting to play part 3 ❤
The story is such a beautiful story! It makes me so upset that people still are angry, and just evil over a complex game they don’t understand. Hopefully one day they will be able to open up their mind, and truly see how beautiful and poetic this game really is. The fight about who is wrong, and who is right is very funny! Because, at the end of the day, the whole point was that everyone was wrong, in their own way. I am so excited, for this game to continue to thrive. Truly, this one game changed the way I viewed things, and it’s stupid, but it truly did! I am happy these wonderful creators were finally able to speak their truth. And express how God awful they were treated. It makes me so sad that they didn’t get the respect that they deserved!
2:13:09 I love that they talk about getting all the details right so nothing can “take you out of the scene”- as the hammer clips through Abby’s leg. (To be fair, I’m pretty sure that’s either a mod or an alternate skin)
41:30 I've watched a number of reactors playing the game, and almost everyone as soon as the cutscene at Joel's grave is over and they get control of Ellie, they walk back over to the grave and stand there for a moment. Almost nobody immediately follows Dina out of the cemetery. 1:00:00 I loved the swimming scene on the way to the museum. It felt so right to have Joel teach the player the swimming mechanic by having Ellie remember a time when Joel was teaching her to swim. 2:57:30 I disagree with Ashley here. When Ellie killed Mel, she was horrified to discover what she'd done. When Abby found out Dina was pregnant, she seemed excited to be able to inflict that much more pain upon the people who'd been killing her friends. She only stopped because Lev was there and she didn't want Lev to think bad of her. Abby actually looked disappointed that she didn't get to kill Dina in front of Ellie. 3:25:00 Ellie sparing Abby in the final fight was so powerful. Abby got her revenge and realized that didn't fix everything and then she had to find a way to heal after that, but Ellie managed to spare Abby without ever getting her revenge. Yes, Ellie killed a lot of Abby's friends but I think it says a lot that Abby didn't find her humanity again until after getting her revenge, but Ellie managed to find hers while she had her revenge literally within her grasp and then let it go. I will always believe Ellie wearing Dina's bracelet when returning to the farm at the end means she's going to try to reconcile with Dina, and I hope she can. To me, leaving the guitar is her letting go of Joel, and everything that means. Letting go of him saving her life, letting go of not being able to reconcile with him, of losing him, of the whole revenge journey his loss drove her to... all of it. It's her closing the door on a part of her life so she can finally move forward into a new life, whatever that means. All I can say about the vitriol after the game's release, I think some of it was driven by grief. Ellie went on a murderous rampage because she watched someone she loved be murdered. The game put the player in her mind in that moment and they had to deal with that loss and rage as well and they went on a rampage of hatred at the people they "blamed" for killing a character they loved. I'm not excusing the behavior but I do think the game was so successful in making the player feel that loss, anger and rage that some of it spilled over into real life. As time passes,I think people will study the social impact of the game as much as the story itself. And why did I suddenly get all emotional when Neil said "Endure and Survive" at the end?
In defense of Abby, she didnt know how Ellie felt when killing Mel, she probably assumed Ellie did it with no remorse so yes Abby was happy to be able to inflict the exact same pain onto Ellie not more pain but the same pain. An eye for an eye or in this case a pregnant lady for a pregnant lady
you completely misunderstood Abby's journey if you think Abby only didn't kill Dina and Ellie because she didn't want Lev to look at her badly, and that she was disappointed that she didn't kill them. disagreeing with the actor who actually played the character is wild. and following that up by saying the moment Ellie spared Abby was so powerful? they were both powerful moments for different reasons. Abby also managed to stop herself before she got revenge for Owen and Mel. your bias is showing a lil bit.
a lot of the reason why people misinterpret the characters and their actions in this game is because they judge everything based off of what we as the player know and not only what the characters know. abby had zero clue about ellie’s state of mind after killing mel, and in HER mind, it’d make sense for her to assume ellie probably relished in it based off of the fact that ellie was there when she killed joel. so when abby learns dina’s pregnant, why did anyone expect her to react otherwise? rage blinds her yet she squeezes her eyes shut and braces herself before the act because deep down it’s not something she wants to do, but rather feels like she HAS to do due to the cycle of revenge.
Do you guys realize that "because ellie did it before" it's not an excuse to enjoy killing a pregnant girl right? And even if the actor says a thing but then shows another the Canon one is the last one, it's what you show not what you meant to show
2:28:50 what do you MEAN Abby was supposed to die originally? I truly can't imagine this game that way. I believe if she died (and so did Lev i suppose) then everything would be for no reason.
God I get emotional every time I play this game. Every damn time. Such deep tones in this story, such incredible acting. No other game hits emotionally as tlou.
ruclips.net/video/3BoA0RckOk8/видео.html Oh, man. I LOVE that it was Ashley's idea to have Ellie not hug Joel at the end of this scene. I feel like it informs Ellie's entire journey in this game. The guilt Ellie holds for the lack of catharsis and the lack of closure with this father figure of hers that never got resolved, and her subsequent guilt about it. I personally feel like her guilt is a huge motivator for why she lost herself SO much in the pursuit of Joel's killers. In reality, we very rarely say everything that needs to be said or resolve issues we have with loved ones before they go. Through chaos and calamity, loved ones can die with no warning, and it creates such a vacuum of remorse for those they leave behind. Ellie hadn't yet forgiven Joel for what he did, but they were JUST about to make steps to work towards that....and then he was taken from her before that could come to fruition. It was a perfect storm for her. I wouldn't have it any other way.
I think a big factor of Ellies decisions in this game are around choice, and having control over her own life, from simple things like being able to stand up for herself against b*got sandwich guy, to having the choice to sacrifice herself for the greater good at the end of part 1 to having control of how her relationship with Joel is resolved, she doesnt get her choice of ending both in part 1 and in forgiving Joel, and that broke her, ironically she has a choice to end this story whenever she chooses and she almost realises that way too late
Probably the most important game for the advancement of storytelling in videogames in the past 20 years. Naughty Dog and everybody involved did our hobby a great service and it's a damn shame so many people couldn't recognize this over their love of Joel. I'm really looking forward to the reaction to season 2 of the show now.
Spoimer warning: Regarding the advancment of storytelling so do I think that you are wrong. And I saying this not becouse I have love for Joel. From my view so is the story not great from many reason. The begining are for exempel to fast. We never get the change to explore the city where Joel and Ellie lives. And how abby happens to find Joel are qute sloppy. I also think that the game should have ended at the farm. Where we (the player) should have given the right to decide if ellie should stay at the farm or going adter abby a secpund time
@@AnjektusStudio I'm sorry but this isn't telltale where we get to choose your own choices. it's a story that isn't about you. it's about them. and yeah, Jackson was not really shed upon but it really doesn't matter it's just a community with normal people. and how they found joel is pretty obvious tommy was a firefly and knew marlene. along with other fireflys they probably knew where tommy was which led to joels demise
@@James-V So from what you are saying. So am I not allowed to have my view and opinion about how the game begins? As Jackson are not important according to you. And I´m also not allowed to have an opinion (I think you talking about the ending), because it´s not a story where we get to choose our own choices?. Well! sorry if you think I´m being rude. But that is really silly and a very crazy statement. Because We have a segment at the farm whit Dina & Elle that is (depending of what you do), that is around 20min. Where they are establishing their new home. So their are no need from my view to have Ellie then getting out and try to kill Abby again. And you can disagree. But it´s rude to say that I can´t think like this. Their is also no need to telling me how they found joel, Read my comment and you would understand that I think that it is a to big coincidence, and a big plot hole from my point of you. About how they stumped upon Joel.
The apple thing with Isaac cracks me up because there's a storyline in Curb Your Enthusiasm in the final season where there's an actress (I forget who it was at the moment) who could only give her best performance when she was eating an apple or some kind of fruit in the scene.
Thank you for uploading this. I was so excited when I heard about the dev commentary and really disappointed when it turned out to only cover the cutscenes, would have loved to hear about earlier iterations of level design, audio, animation etc. The commentary here is fantastic, but not worth playing through the entire game for in my mind, so it was great being able to take it all in in one go like this.
Losing the fingers makes me curious how effective Ellie will be in combat in the third game, because losing 2 fingers is gonna massively affect your hand to hand skills, ability to hold a gun, your general grip strength, etc. Maybe we just need suspension of disbelief but it would certainly be a bit immersion breaking.
I'm sure they can consult with people in the service who have missing pinky/ring fingers and ask them questions about it. Make it more realistic. I know it's also farfetched, but maybe Ellie could have a prosthetic, but it's the apocalypse so what are the chances of her having the skills or finding someone to help her with that.
You're right that it's a handicap in a fight, but I think the difference will be fairly minor, for two very simple reasons. It's her left hand; it's not made explicit in the game she's a righty but I think we can assume so, and one important clue is that most people strum a guitar with their dominant hand and fret with their left.. and secondly, Ellie's fighting style has never relied on brute strength and power, she fights fast and smart. But if we do get a game 3 with a lot of Ellie, I think it would make sense for them to show how she's adapted to compensate for the weakness.. and knowing Naughty Dog they'll probably do just that :) Not like them to overlook details like that
I wonder if there was any intention to make the player think that the cut to black after Ellie couldn't play Future Days was going to be the end credits. Cause for a moment, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this, I thought that was the end. I was hoping they'd say something about that in the commentary. I feel like they held the black screen a couple extra seconds to make the player think it was over. I'm so glad they gave us that last scene. It really is so bitter sweet.
I can't believe I just realized that it was Joels voice at first instead of Tommy at the aquarium. I'd of never heard it! All the times i played I never knew it.
That also gives you some insight into the twenty years it shows you that toomy was with joel when he learned the torcher methods tommy hadnt joined the fireflies yet
Why are you like this? People have the right to complain about things that bothered them since they paid the thing, why is it that hard for people like you to accept it instead of just insult them?
@@gaia7240 never insulted anyone lol😂 go ahead and have your opinion. Just thought its funny cause this is a line from the game, in case you didnt notice.
3:39:59 I thought of leaving the guitar there as a little more hopeful than even Ellie realised; that Ellie no longer needs this thing to remember him. She can finally remember him and the last conversation she had with him, all without the guitar. Joel has always been around but now, he’s no longer a guitar…He’s now her shadow.
I think this is one of the greatest AAA single player experiences I've ever played. I can't thank Neil, the voice actors and everyone else at naughty dog enough for the amount of time, thought and passion put in to this project. I'll never forget these journeys
I recently finished the game, it took me a year when I first started playing it up to the point where Joel died, I couldn’t go on I had to grieve as a player. I’m so glad I came back and finished playing this game. It was such a beautiful story, I can’t tell yall how many times I ugly cried especially at the end. It’s a hard but good journey and story. Thank you naughty dog for this masterpiece and making the best game I’ve ever played.
i knew tommy was the sniper shooting at manny and abby. we knew tommy was in the area, and there was the section where tommy lets ellie use his rifle and scope to murk those zombies that were like a half mile off. really fun part of the game and obv heartbreaking ending to this section.
I remember thinking that Niel "Self-inserted" himself as Dina, because of the weed stuff. Not because of the synagogue level or for his crush on Ellie or anything like that.
2:13:05 "There's so many things that done improperly would take you out of the scene" This is said whilst an axe is clearly phasing through Abby's leg...
@@tlou_explained Yeah I figured because it never happened when I played it on my PS4 or PS5, just is really ironic that it happened at the specific moment Neil said that 😂
This is awesome thanks so much for posting it. This is one of my favorite stories of all time, because of its complexities. People just want an easily consumable and satisfying story but that’s not real life and this game actually has something to say. It will stand the test of time. I am curious how they will movie forward with the story in the tv show as they get into part 2 content. I know they have said before they won’t stray far from the game’s story but Neil also said at the end he’s not sure he’d ever put an actor in the same position as Laura was as Abby again… so I’m curious how they’ll handle it. I think Abby is a fantastic character and her half of the game is just as good as Ellie’s.
I am watching this on the game as I type. Just got to the part where Jesse grabs Ellie from behind covering her mouth, and was surprised to hear them say people were upset by that scene. That some people were expecting Joel, I guess because of the jacket sleeves similarity? When I first played it I was expecting Tommy.
They were upset because in a trailer for the game they animated and voiced that scene with Joel, and it was released to intentionally deceive people because.....well presumably they were afraid that if Ellie was on a mission with somebody other than Joel then people would think that Joel is dead and wouldn't be as likely to get the game....this was not the only bait and switch in the trailers for the game, that is what people were upset about
1:54:21 “Mel needed to be so likable” huge fan of this game but I’ll say she didn’t come off as very likable. I mean we definitely feel sorry for her with Owen being a putz and how it ended for her, but likable is not how I would describe Mel. Anyway…great commentary.
i think part of the trouble is that whenever we see her in this game she's extremely uncomfortable. but she does try to connect w Abby up until a point, and she's probably the most empathetic person in the SLC besides Owen.
so so funny to hear haley gross hate on Seth, ironically my second playthrough is when i realized what that scene was for and i had a huuuuge epiphany over how reciprocally hateful i am towards prejudiced ppl especially homophobes. remembering that prejudice is learned and hurt people hurt people, remembering that his character lost half his family and is in fact a miserable human being like most hateful people.. break the cycle, y’all. even with bigots.
Love this Game, all the Characters the story, and Love what it's about. Wish, they would've talked about the boat on Catalina island, Hope that Lev & Abby made it. Would love Abby & Lev Game
They started in 2013/2014 right after the first game, but then Amy Henning left Naughty Dog and Uncharted 4 had an "all hands on deck" situation where the entire studio had to come together to finish the game. Originally U4 and TLoU2 were being developed at the same time. So they paused development on TLoU2 for 2 years before resuming production in 2016
These games definitely made me question humanity and the things we are capable of for the ones that we love. I did not touch the game for two days because I genuinely grieved for Joel and Ellie in the basement scene, crazy to say for video game characters right?. Forgiveness and breaking the cycle of hate and violence is what I took from this game and is a part of my moral compass. Even named my baby girl Ellie

Absolutely agreed, one of the best pieces of media I've ever seen

Luke Skywalker became Obi Wan Kenobi (as a Jedi master)
Ellie became Joel (as you explained)
There are numerous other examples in literature and movies that you can probably think of.
that's interesting, when you think it like that Part III (that just has been confirmed) makes so much sense
some of the outfit changes in the footage are hilarious
Why is it like that?? I came to the comments to try and figure it out. Also in some scenes in different videos Abby will have a short braid versus long?

Your mom is cool too. She has a cool ass. Very cool.
@lrsb1678 I believe it was a dumb rumor they spread after the script was leaked before the game came out
Just goes to show (especially after watching the Grounded 2 documentary) that these are actual human beings with feelings that can also be hurt beyond comprehension (through death threats especially obviously...) with sh*t rumors like this when working on such a huge almost sometimes seemingly impossible project. I feel insane even having to say this, but it feels like a ton of people seem to NOT get this!
Thank you Naughty Dog for not giving into the hate, the game beautifully reflects how we all should treat senseless haters. Let them go, it's just not worth it.
That show “Evil” introduced me to a good name for those types: clout chasers.
@@kyletotten1685 hear hear, I think it's one of the most awarded games of all time, definitely was at the time.
Shout out to Cascina Caradonna and Jocelyn Mettler for providing Abbey and Dina's faces
It never occurred to me that Dina making Jesse turn around was for Ellie.

HOLY SHIT ASHLEY VOICES GWEN AND YURI VOICES BEN?!! WTF 💀 How did I not know this. Thanks for this info
My one gripe is that Ellie never knew Abby’s motivations.
I wish they had a dialogue.
I feel like it truly would've undone the excellent story they were developing at its most crucial moments.
the chick u game end in the hospital explains why they did what they did i think
@@Midwestemoisme In the hospital, Nora tells Ellie some of it but not nearly all. Stil, I feel like by game's end has enough to put the clues together
Yes, I thought to myself several times: “Why don’t they talk to each other MORE?”
Why doesn't Ellie ask in more detail what happened in the hospital for 2 years(!)?

I don't know how he'd react."
From that, you see she is afraid to tell Joel and is a bit in awe of Cat being so open and having the ability to talk to family.
“But it’s such a stoopid story, Joel went out like a beotch not like the man he was in Part 1, Neil Cuckman is a hack, the game is woke because Ellie is gay, there’s no way Abby can get that big because women don’t make testosterone and males don’t make estrogen, Abby is trans, story doesn’t make sense because Ellie gave up her quest for revenge at the end, blah blah blah”
The silent majority agrees this game is a masterpiece on a whole new level.
Thanks for uploading this man
I love everything about this. i love learning little things about the process and the people that made this game possible.
@@gaia7240that’s absolutely delusional take, everything they did, everything you see in the game, is intentional
@@Midwestemoisme of course it's intentional but they changed idea too many times and it shows
I still am of the opinion that this game would've digested better if it was actually two games and Abby's came first, so that we could know and accept Abby's character without the added context that she killed Joel.
The fact that all my feelings were validated because they wanted to elucidate that reaction + most importantly, and I know it sounds silly, but hearing the director and Abby's voice actor also express some sorrow for how Joel went, actually helped because subconsciously I associated them with villains of the story 😅
thank you so much for this!
@@tlou_explainedlol true
neil didn’t exactly explain this part of the game, but he said in another sequence that the player has to “suspend their belief” while playing the game a bit. after all, it is a videogame, and even realistic games such as red dead have a few moments where some stuff just doesn’t make sense. anyways, there’s a lot of details in tlou 2 that aren’t realistic, such as how can Ellie use her guns after swimming in the water with them? even the mechanic of listening mode isn’t realistic either, because how can ellie see through walls? i am agreeing with you though that you’ll somehow need superhuman strength and dexterity to make it back to jackson after getting absolutely blown to smithereens, but people need to remember that a game as big as this one cannot be 100% realistic or explained.
dude did u even play the game? abby left them alive on lev's request and tommy is maimed
I think it's more realistic than Joel somehow surviving getting impaled, and a bottle of magic penicillin instantly curing him the next day.
Been waiting for stuff like this. Love the breakdowns of the scenes. Just waiting on the documentary now.
So glad your covering the commentary for tlou2 ❤
You could see Tommy being the sniper a mile away and it was that much more entertaining and interesting because of it.
The beauty of it is it works either way :)
Which scene?
the scene where tommy snipes Abbys friend near the aquarium@@davidfromsouthpark9023
If you couldn't put together the fact that Ellie split from Jesse because they overheard about a "sniper" and Jesse wanted to go find him and Ellie didn't, and then Jesse and Tommy both show up at the Aquarium ... You are on the left side of the bell curve
1:08:32 only just noticed:
Ellie goes from the flashback with the rocket launch tape that has radio chatter recordings during her moment with Joel, and has a moment with Dina that's punctuated by radio chatter
I saw all cutscenes with director commentary on 4k on my big tv and the game looks so amazing.
Wow thank you so much for putting this all together!
It makes me so sad that they didn’t get the respect that they deserved!
im so glad that there are a lot of people on tiktok that have been coming back to this game and seeing how beautiful it is
Can you explain why you think it's beautiful and poetic?
2:13:09 I love that they talk about getting all the details right so nothing can “take you out of the scene”- as the hammer clips through Abby’s leg.
(To be fair, I’m pretty sure that’s either a mod or an alternate skin)
Am so glad u did this thanks jude😊❤
This is a very good Supercut thank you
41:30 I've watched a number of reactors playing the game, and almost everyone as soon as the cutscene at Joel's grave is over and they get control of Ellie, they walk back over to the grave and stand there for a moment.
She was going to be killed by Ellie at the end
I love that in 1 chapter there was 5 Critical Role People, Ashley, Laura, Liam, Travis and Matt 😂
God I get emotional every time I play this game. Every damn time. Such deep tones in this story, such incredible acting. No other game hits emotionally as tlou.
ruclips.net/video/3BoA0RckOk8/видео.html
Oh, man.
I wouldn't have it any other way.
agreed
thank you sm for uploading ❤
Spoimer warning:
Regarding the advancment of storytelling so do I think that you are wrong.
I didn't realize until now that Tommy was going after Manny specifically. I thought he was just making his way to Abby
thank you so fucking much for uploading this whole thing for those of us too broke for the remaster 😂
I saw the guitar differently. She can't play without those 2 fingers, in the same way Tommy was a sniper who lost an eye.
I absolutely love every one of these people and htis game. They are such good storytellers
I dunno, pure speculation but i get the sense part 3 wouldn’t have a lot of game play with Ellie. Like Joel in the second game.
But if we do get a game 3 with a lot of Ellie, I think it would make sense for them to show how she's adapted to compensate for the weakness.. and knowing Naughty Dog they'll probably do just that :) Not like them to overlook details like that
My favorite game of all time
I wonder if there was any intention to make the player think that the cut to black after Ellie couldn't play Future Days was going to be the end credits.
To all the haters, why don't you say whatever speech you got rehearsed, and get this over with
Why are you like this? People have the right to complain about things that bothered them since they paid the thing, why is it that hard for people like you to accept it instead of just insult them?
@@gaia7240 never insulted anyone lol😂 go ahead and have your opinion. Just thought its funny cause this is a line from the game, in case you didnt notice.
@@lpfan5641 I did get it but I thought you actually mean it
50:06 I KNEW his voice was familiar! lol
Thank you for upload this 👍
I think this is one of the greatest AAA single player experiences I've ever played.
Thank you naughty dog for this masterpiece and making the best game I’ve ever played.
i knew tommy was the sniper shooting at manny and abby. we knew tommy was in the area, and there was the section where tommy lets ellie use his rifle and scope to murk those zombies that were like a half mile off. really fun part of the game and obv heartbreaking ending to this section.
thanks for putting this up
I remember thinking that Niel "Self-inserted" himself as Dina, because of the weed stuff. Not because of the synagogue level or for his crush on Ellie or anything like that.
2:13:05 "There's so many things that done improperly would take you out of the scene"
This is said whilst an axe is clearly phasing through Abby's leg...
that could have happened because I had a different skin on Abby from what she would normally be wearing, it does cause issues like that sometimes
@@tlou_explained Yeah I figured because it never happened when I played it on my PS4 or PS5, just is really ironic that it happened at the specific moment Neil said that 😂
This how I felt all through the game
Thank you so much
1:19:19 can't help but notice how much Ellie has grown, she was so smol compared to Joel in part 1
Well it's the best person between them
thank you for posting this is interesting
I think a lot of people that hate certain characters or storylines should play this version
Masterpiece of the decade
so so funny to hear haley gross hate on Seth, ironically my second playthrough is when i realized what that scene was for and i had a huuuuge epiphany over how reciprocally hateful i am towards prejudiced ppl especially homophobes. remembering that prejudice is learned and hurt people hurt people, remembering that his character lost half his family and is in fact a miserable human being like most hateful people.. break the cycle, y’all. even with bigots.
2:17:10 Neil mentioning meat during this part is too funny. We wanted players to feel the hog on our boy Owen
Thank you so much for this
Love this Game, all the Characters the story, and Love what it's about.
Wish, they would've talked about the boat on Catalina island, Hope that Lev & Abby made it. Would love Abby & Lev Game
God I love this game so much.
1:01:00 my god, this was developed enough even before Uncharted 4 was released?
2:16:35 that’s exactly how I was hoping they would react to “the scene “
