    The Condor crews were brave. If they were shot down, or had to ditch at sea, there was no rescue for them in the middle of the Atlantic. They would perish in the sea even if they survived the initial crash.

    Fw200 condors were pressed into service during ww2 attacking ships in Atlantic in route to supply england and later as transports during battle of Stalingrad in 1943. The condor was a former airliner design and its fuselage had structural weaknesses causing several to break their backs on landings.

    An interesting documentary about one of the Luftwaffe's few four-engined bombers - a pity there's no sound or commentary!

      the FW-200 wasnt a Bomber, it was designed as a commercial airliner and was later used as a long range recon aircraft. a few were used as Transporter.

      +weigibabe You're right; the same was true, by the way, of the Heinkel 111: both 'planes were designed, pre-War, for non-military purposes; but were converted to military use following the declaration of hostilities

    • @weigibabe
      @weigibabe 8 лет назад +1

      thagts not right, the Heinkel 111 was already designed as a Bomber but was presented as an airliner because germany was not allowed to build military aircrafts. you can see it in some details like the bomb bay on the 111. the FW-200 does not have a Bomb Bay because where you want to have it is the Main Wing Spar.

      +weigibabe Fine, thanks for the correction

      there are a lot of pre-war Planes who was designed for military Purposes but not presented as.
      but thats OK, we here in Germany are still discovering what the whole aircraft industry was about in this years.. what we have already found out is that the German Industry was way ahead (about 10-15 years!) of the allied industry.. there is a reason why the F86 wings are exactly the same like on the Me-262 H-Version ;)
